NBA Fearsome Foursomes

Now that the Lakers have signed Lamar Odom to a long term contract you have to wonder if there is a team out there with enough talent to beat them. The Lakers have lost only Trevor Ariza from last years team while adding Ron Artest. While Artest is a head case the Lakers have the best psychologist/coach in the league in Phil Jackson. If Jackson could work with Dennis Rodman, he will certainly be able to work with Artest. So the Lakers can put a line-up on the floor that includes Kobe Bryant, Paul Gasol, Odom and Artest, a very talented bunch. If Jackson can get and keep them all on the same page they will be tough to beat.

In the Western Conference the toughest competition could come from the Spurs who added Richard Jefferson to their roster. If Manu Ginobli can come all the way back the Spurs will be able to go at the Lakers with a line-up that includes Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Jefferson and Ginobli.

Over in the East the Celtics have but together their version of a fearsome foursome with the signing of Rasheed Wallace. If the Celtics can get Kevin Garnett back from his injury they will have a line-up that includes Wallace, Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen.

I know the season is a long way off, but I am looking forward to seeing these fearsome foursomes collide on the basketball court. It will be interesting to see which team, if any, can put aside their egos and play together to win a championship.

Hmm, adding 1.5 teams to this.

Nelson/Carter/Lewis/Howard isn’t a foursome to laugh at

Miller/Roy/Aldridge/Oden might not be either, depends on Miller’s fit and how Oden does not that he’s back in shape.

Bonus Foursome:
Lebron/Lebron/Lebron/Shaq

lol, the blazers are hardly a fearsome foursome.

its more like scary good sg, then pretty good pg and pf, and so far nothing but hype center lol

by robi s on Aug 3, 2009 4:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Okay?

Odom and Artest aren’t exactly all NBA caliber players either. Would you care to make a wager on Oden’s PER compared to Odom’s this year?

Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.

by Zaig on Aug 4, 2009 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions

PER is a stupid stat. Odom is way more of a special player than Oden. No one can do what odom does.

as for artest….Defensive player of the year isnt enough for you?

I wont make a wager about stupid stats, but I will wager you that the lakers go farther than the blazers this year

by robi s on Aug 4, 2009 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Heh

Any stat you want to use to compare the two? Sorry, I’m not a fan of “Player A is better than player B because I said so.” There should be some evidence to support this opinion.

And Artest isn’t the same player he was then.

Umm duh, but not because Odom > anyone. I’ve already mentioned how crazy good Gasol is.

Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.

by Zaig on Aug 4, 2009 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

haha well you cant real say this guy is better than this guy, cuz his stats are better, stats dont tell the whole story of whats going on. The only real proof of a player being better would be if the played one on one. and even then that doesnt take account team play….

so we’ll just have to have a debate when they play eachother next year.

by robi s on Aug 4, 2009 3:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Why would you compare Odom to Oden. Oden plays center, Odom is a power forward. Wouldn’t it make more sense to compare centers to centers. ie: Bynum and Oden?

by intuitive on Aug 4, 2009 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions

This post is discussing "Big 4s"

Bynum was included in the Lakers. I guess you could go
Gasol v Oden
Odom v Aldridge
Kobe v Roy
still leaves you with a silly Artest v Miller though.

Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.

by Zaig on Aug 4, 2009 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions

To their respective positions it would be
Kobe vs Roy
Fisher vs Miller
Gasol vs Aldridge
Artest vs Batum
Oden vs Bynum

and maybe
Odom vs Przybilla/Outlaw?

Btw just a question, but if Oden has a breakout year is he going to continue coming off the bench?

by intuitive on Aug 4, 2009 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm pretty sure he'll start

I also don’t believe Nate when he says Blake is still the starter. Unless Nate’s plan is to have Miller/Oden compeltely murder other team’s benches, I see no reason why these two don’t start.

The one bench issue is that
Blake/Rudy/Webster/Outlaw/Przybilla gives you some insane 3 point shooting, but no playmakers outside of Outlaw, and he’s a black hole.

And yeah, Fisher, Bynum and Batum weren’t in the BIG 4 discussion, hence me having to butcher matchups.

Player Efficiency Rankings

Formula based on all the good and bad stats to grade a player’s efficiency. So a guy with 20p, 10a, 10r, on 10/20 shooting in 20 minutes would have a lot better per than a 20/10/10 guy who played 40 minutes and shot 10/30.

by Zaig on Aug 10, 2009 2:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Pretty simplistic view of the game

But the guys with the best PERs are typically the considered best players by the fans anyway, so the system works for a general offensive overview. (Only steals/rebs/blocks come into play on the defensive end.)

Same thing I said to Robi

Odom vs Oden PER this year.
Kobe’s edge over Roy is shrinking, although is still exists.
Gasol dominates LMA with ease. (This is why the Lakers win the 4 some)
I’d take Miller over Ron Ron anyday.
Oden is somewhat of an unknown this year, but I’d take him over Odom regardless.

And frankly, I like the Orlando 4some better than yours.
Howard is the only Center better than Gasol
Give me Lewis over Ron ron anyday as well
Carter is a superior player to Odom
Kobe beats Nelson

hahah i like you matched them up randomly….comparing players in two different positions doesnt make any sense. You’d have to compare complete starting fives, and even then individual advantages dont mean a thing if those five cant play together effectively.

but to humor you yes, orlando is techincally better than us on paper, but paper doesnt mean a thing. We’ll have this discussion come next june.

We'll see what Odom does

he might become even more valuable now that he doesn’t even have to be a 3rd or 4th option (depending on what petulant mood Bynum is in from game to game) with Artest around.

You don't want Artest shooting

40% from the field and 40% from the 3 point line. So, you want him launching 3s, that’s pretty good, but he is also 40% from 2 point range. That is pretty horrific.

how many were open shots?

compared to him just dribbling the ball around. Lakers shoot high percentages not because they are all great shooters, or can hit under pressure, but because the triangle offense finds open shots for players on the court.

You're kidding right?

Carter’s old, and DID YOU SEE HOWARD AND GASOL IN THE FINALS?

by KobeisGod on Sep 9, 2009 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions

TBH

I have concerns over the Orlando team and the Blazers team.

Orlando for obviously the Nelson/Carter/Lewis/Howard combo’s pretty dangerous.
The Lakers couldn’t beat the Nelson/Lewis/Hedo/Howard combo in the regular season
It was pretty evident that a full strength Nelson was the difference.
So if Nelson is healthy and Carter meshes well with the team they’ll be a force to reckon with.
Their matchup against us would look like this:

Kobe / Pietrus
D-Fish / Nelson
Pau / Lewis
Bynum / Howard
Artest / Carter
LO / Bass
Sasha / Barnes

Nelson is a clear advantage (unless somehow Shannon can keep him in check).
Pau / LO can hold Howard / Lewis in check
Artest basically needs to hold his own against Carter. Pester him defensively. Fill TA’s role and beyond.
Bass and Barnes are the wild card for the Magic and Drew would be ours. If Drew can remain healthy, he could be a force to reckon with and that’ll leave LO to deal with Bass.

The Blazers have just been a matchup nightmare against us – especially at the Rose Garden – they’re young and athletic, but I’m hoping Artest can answer some of our problems with the Blazers.

Also, is anyone impressed with the Mavs? I am, they’ve been steadily improving during the offseason, quietly adding a lot of players, they have the potential to be the #3 to 5 seed, if everything works out for them.

Nelson, when healthy, gives us fits.

by intuitive on Aug 3, 2009 6:04 PM PDT up reply actions

ya Orlando is scary. They arent full of old men like the Celts.

LO is gonna be our main X factor. He is way more talented than Bass.

also Lewis tends to disapear during games too.

by robi s on Aug 3, 2009 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah

that’s why i’m not worried too much about Lewis.
Either Pau or LO checked him just fine.

TA struggled with Hedo in the 2nd and 3rd games, but did a little better in the 4th and 5th.

Even though boston has old dudes they’re still a formidable team.

Artest didn't bother Roy in the playoffs

In fact, Roy was the only Blazer doing anything against Houston in that series. He will be a pain on the defensive side because of his size though. Bynum/Gasol/Artest is a pretty big lineup if that’s what you guys start with and not many teams can cover that easily.

roy is like kobe, he is going to be able to do anything against pretty much everyone he plays.

Unfortunately i dont think the lakers have to play portland in next years playoffs

1-8 Lakers vs. Doesnt matter
2-7 spurs utah
3-6 Portland vs NO
4-5 Denver vs Mavs

Portland is not gonna be the spurs. and if portland is the 4 or 5th seat they arent going to be denver or the mavs.

again we’ll see… just because a team beats a team during the regular season doesnt mean they are going to beat them in the playoffs. The lakers-magic series is a prime example.

We also dont know if a team got better until they actually start playing. Its not like they acquired steve nash, the got miller, he is an okay pg, hes not a significant improvement. billups can eat miller alive.

by robi s on Aug 4, 2009 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Umm

Magic had a crippled Nelson in the playoffs. Nelson averaged 27.5 on 60something percent shooting in the regular seasons. Obviously injuries happen, so that’s life, but the regular season is very telling of the playoffs.

1 Seed Dallas struggled vs 8 seed GSW in the regular season. Look what happened in playoffs.

how about Rockets-Lakers?

4-0 regular season, struggled to beat them in the playoffs

Regular season games are far different than playoff games. Only brief moments in a regular season games can give u a window into what to expect in a playoff game. Teams are on back-to-backs. 3 games in 4 nights. Long road trips. Dolldrums of the midseason.

This is, after all, why they play the game, and don’t give out trophies for assembling the best team on paper.

First of all, you're a month behind.

Second of all, Howard is the only all-star currently. Nelson was voted in once (barely) and didn’t play. Carter is over the hill and no longer an all-star, Lewis has been an all-star twice, scored 5 ppg, shot 30%. I could give you a list of former all stars that would make you puke, but what is the point. The point was they are good, but not great. How about we compromise and call them “grood”?

It is reasonable to think that all 4 Lakers could be all-stars this year, (however not likely) but not nearly as reasonable to assume the 4 Magic would be.

Kareem, Magic, Bird, Worthy, and West are all perennial all stars, but that doesn’t mean they would currently field a very good team. Unless they are playing the Washington Generals.

The lakers are gonna be trying an extra large lineup which I would love to see

Lo at the point
Kobe at the 2
Artest at the swing
Pau
Bynum.

sure pg’s will be running odom ragged, but they are already doing it to fisher. WIth LO at the point, the celts won be able to put rondo in, and most likely Scal will have to come in hahah.

by robi s on Aug 3, 2009 4:34 PM PDT reply actions

doubt it

Only happened for six minutes in the regular season, and only once in the playoffs. And what I’m talking about is having 3 bigs in the game at one time (Lamar was Small Forward, NOT Point Guard).

The regular season lineup was Fisher, Kobe, LO, Powell, and Bynum. The playoff lineup was Fisher, Bryant, Odom, Powell, and Pau.

I read phil was going to experiment with it, during the preseasson and if it worked he would employ it.

It makes sense considering we would be exploiting our rivals small pgs. I read LO was working on his 3pt shot this summer too.

by robi s on Aug 3, 2009 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Sounds like fun, one problem though

Bynum will have to stop PGs on every play when they run by Odom. During the playoffs he picked up fouls at an Odenlike rate. That wouldn’t be a good sign for Andrew.

well ideal odom will be forcing those pg to run into our twin towers.

Bynum wasnt necessarily to foul prone when he was 100%, its just his timing was way off during the playoffs…

also you’re forgeting pgs are running by fisher anyway lol

wouldnt it be kobe at point
artest at 2

Pau at PF

it does

but some people have been playing NBA Live or NBA 2k# too much. A common exploit is to place Odom at Point Guard, and you can exploit the opposition every time down.
