Beginning with the game last March and continuing with the Times article, a lot has been made about Battier's defense and his intangibles. And he definitely deserves more credit than a standard boxscore can ever give him. But last season, over a sizeable sample of games, it was not Battier who affected the final score most for the Rockets against the Lakers, but Artest. And now, Artest has joined the team he was so effective against.

as far as I'm concerned
power rankings are stupid.
BUT
if if they still have to do those power rankings, at least for the beginning of season list the Champions as #1.
That much respect they can give, come on.
Then once the season starts they can go on kissing LBJ’s butt or the Spurs until, oh lookee there, both teams aren’t in the Finals … again.

Also, if the Magic are feeling disrespected
Then what are the Lakers feeling?
They just won a freaking chip and people are still ready to rank the Cavs or the Spurs higher than them.
But all being said, besides the Lakers, the Magic are the 2nd best team and while I understand them begrudging the Laker/Cav X-mas game, the rematch of last year’s finals just isn’t as enticing as Shaq/Kobe /Lebron drama that is the Laker/Cav game. Heck, I bet if Shaq hadn’t been traded to Cleveland, the x-mas game would have still been Laker/Celtic.

Cavs no way. But Spurs have a claim to it.
Ron Artest may be > Richard Jefferson, but
Rich Jefferson + McDyess + Dejuan Blair + Healthy Manu – Unhealthy Manu > Ron Artest – Trevor Ariza
I wasn't really talking about offseason changes lol
but yeah, offseason changes, Spurs did a good job, but I would say Orlando did the same or even better.
Vince Carter + Brandon Bass + Matt Barnes + Healthy Jameer Nelson – Unhealthy Jameer Nelson – Hedo Turkoglu – Courtney Lee > Rich Jefferson + McDyess + Dejuan Blair + Healthy Manu – Unhealthy Manu
but I was talking about power rankings in general. Like which team would rank #1 if the season started and by technicality and default, you give respect to the champs until they lose.

Laker,
You forgot one person in that equation. Since you are going to include “Healthy Manu” then I have to include “Healthy Bynum” which when he was healthy meaning 100% he played his butt off. So he has to be included in that equation because I have to see one full season of the new improved Bynum.

I’m calling the NBA! Robot legs are totally illegal.

I add one to that equation
What about Duncan???If there was one player on any contending team besides Shaq that I would expect to get injured its the Big Fundamental. Duncan weighs about 300 (more than Bynum) and he’s 33 (I think) if he gets injured LA WILL MAKE THE FINALS WITH NO MORE COMPETITION. If he he gets injured thats a lot worse for the Spurs than it is for the Lakers if Drew does
I dunno about that as an absolute rule
Miami Heat anyone? Although in this case I would tend to agree.

AI going to Charlotte
would be the best thing for that city.
not necessarily good for the team, but for the city, it’d be good for them.
they need something really happy to cheer about.
While AI isn’t the same player he was in 2001, he’s still a “star” veteran and I’m sure him being on the team will attract viewers, whether the team wins or loses.

The Bobcats need something positive to cheer about. Although I wouldn’t mind seeing AI in Memphis. They still wouldn’t contend but it would be a hell of a fun team to watch with Gay, Mayo, and AI.

Ironically it would be fun
If only to see how few assists they could go a game with Iverson, Mayo, Gay, and Randolph on the floor.
Charlotte is basically the only place I could see him going and making some sort of basketball sense because Charlotte’s offense was downright dismal last season (as compared to their above-average defense, clearly a sign of players buying into Brown’s system) and they need scoring desperately. In every other possible destination, he’s simply a distraction, kills offenses, and stunts the growth of younger players.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
Mayo still wants to play point
He’s spent the summer, supposedly, trying to resuscitate his PG skills, under at least some supervision from Memphis assistant coaches. He did the same thing before getting drafted, of course, partly in an effort to patch up holes in his draft stock. And he’s still at it.
Under the circumstances, maybe that’s one way of trying to stake a claim on the ball. Man. Mike Conley Jr. is already waking up nights, even without O.J. making an open run at his job.
Where are Memphis or Charlotte going to get in three years’ time by signing Allen Iverson? Are they going to be legitimate contenders for a championship? Because otherwise, that signing would be pointless for either one of them. Fans need something to cheer for, sure. But what exactly do you think you’re cheering for in Iverson, for those franchises?
As fans we rarely see that business side of things. This is just my point of view but I think that this might also be a move to put seats in the stadium. Considering that Charlotte ranked 26 and Memphis 29 in attendance amongst all 30 teams which is pretty bad especially in this economy I would say that makes business sense. If I were the owner and my team wasn’t making the playoffs but was profitable that would the losing more bareable. In short, Iverson would generate income so he is more of an investment than a shot at trying to make the playoffs. This is especially true for a team in a small market.

Yeah,
The “eating the seed corn” angle is pretty clear. Memphis’s willingness to tread water is established, as well.
I mean, they made the Gasol trade largely for financial reasons, right? Have you noticed that Zach Randolph is now occupying almost exactly the same cap space as Gasol? Their deals for the next couple of years are essentially identical; Gasol makes just a smidge more. Way to swim upsteam, there, Chris Wallace. That’s some brilliant GM-ery, there.
I did read about Zach Randolph today on ESPN.
That is some bad GM decision making. It is very Isiah-Thomasish! But I know that the owner is the ultimate decision making so if I was a Memphis fan I would be wondering WTF! is going on here.

Why, did the Lakers need someone to fill Anthony Peeler's big shoes?
Possibly Mayo’s outside shot would make him an effective PG in the triangle. Otherwise at that spot I’d almost prefer Conley, even after a couple of questionable seasons’ development.
Mayo’s hard working, he’s smart, and as the season went on last year he looked more and more like a lowish-percentage, volume-scoring ‘tween guard. Maybe that means he’s Allen Iverson in a few years’ time. Maybe it means he’s Larry Hughes. Either way his assist percentage was lower than Javaris Crittenton’s last season.
Assists are overrated. What was Fish's?
Not too great I’d assume. All Mayo would need to do is play D and knock down shots. Two things he does already. Two things Conley cannot.
Ehh?
Conley is a better shooter than Mayo… he just doesn’t take near the volume.
Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.
One could say that Conley wouldn't shoot as well if he took the amount of shots
that Mayo did. Mayo shot at a fairly decent clip for a rookie, and no doubt drew much better defenders.
No way
Mayo is a way better shooter/player. I watched a few Memphis games last year and Mayo is a better all around player. Conley is garbage. I don’t even know what Conley’s numbers are but you can just tell who’s better by watching the game.

Memphis dramatically shuffled its lineups last year
Uh, hey, you think maybe the Grizzlies might have changed up how they did things after they switched coaches? There was a game later last season in which Conley and Marc Gasol each got 30+ points.
Meanwhile Mayo, from late December to early April, became kind’ve a chucker. Regular 7-17 type shooting nights. Big minutes, lots of shots, not a lot of other productivity.
Mayo got worse as the year went on
Conley got substantially better.
Odds are you watched early games of Conley. Now… in terms of raw skill Mayo probably wins. In terms of who is going to create more wins for their team, I’m going with Conley.
Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.
Well, like I said, the triangle is a different PG setting
Wow. A Lakers fan who must think Magic was overrated, then? ;-)
The triangle requires some different stuff, so yeah, like I said, Mayo might fit okay in it. Phil J won in Chicago with points who stood in the left corner and shot threes. BJ Armstrong, Craig Hodges…. those kinds of guys.
It’s pretty clear that Mayo wants to be a “lead guard,” anyway, and that he’s working on his distributing skills for that reason. The results are up in the air. I mean, Chris Mannix had a little blurb about OJ’s play at the Team USA tryouts:
O.J. Mayo: Mayo has a strong relationship with Krzyzewski and Colangelo. He’s also a pure scorer who can carry a team at times. After not looking to pass the ball often in camp, though, he may not be what the U.S. is looking for in a role player in ’10.
funny how this one little comment triggered a whole debate. Instead of arguing over who we can acquire to be our pg, I think we should just hope and pray that J. Farmar gets his shit together. The guy is talented, and knows our system. He just hasnt put all the pieces together to be taken seriously as the potential successor to Fish. It’s his contract year, so it seems in the cards that Farmar will put forward a better season.
Let have this PG convo at the end of the season after we see what we have in farmar.
In Kobe we trust!
I won't count out Mayo improving
But an Iverson-Mayo-Gay-Randolph lineup pairs with an unassuming center (Gasol) or one with very limited offensive skills (Thabeet). Mayo may improve from last season in terms of passing, but it isn’t going to be drastic enough to save what may be a league record for lowest assists recorded by a team in a year. Memphis’ offense last year was already basically a one-on-one exercise; add two ball hogs in Iverson and Randolph and it gets even worse.
As far as the basketball sense in signing Iverson, there’s zero sense for Memphis, as all it does is stunt Conley’s and Mayo’s growth. The “where will this team be after three years?” question is a bit of a red herring — why sign free agents if they don’t get you over the hump immediately? Charlotte has already nuked most of its cap space and is completely unwilling to spend until they get a new owner (hence the Okafor trade), so the fact that Iverson makes some sense on the court as well as drawing seats is an edge.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
Completely agreed about Memphis's acquisitions and lineup
Zach Randolph, Iverson, and Mayo together would be ridiculous. I don’t necessarily agree that free agents at that tier are meant to “get you over the hump immediately,” though. Teams spend the sort of money Memphis seems to want to give Iverson on developmental players and complementary veterans all the time.
The question would be what hump you’re getting over, maybe.
Apparently Charlotte wants to get from being a speed bump to being more of a yield sign, relative to the NBA’s actual power teams. Or, uh, something. When Jordan hired Larry Brown he said it was because LB could teach the young kids. He seems to have missed that Brown stopped being that guy sometime around when he won his Finals, but now he’s catching up.
Something that doesn't make sense
AI is not anymore different than a lot of past and current Superstars. A perfect example of that is Mitch Richmond when he was in Sacto. In his prime he became a free agent and the Lakers tried to sign him but since he wouldn’t get much minutes or as much money he didn’t take it. He got more money and was the superstar with the Kings. Good for him. Years later, way past his prime, he signed with the Lakers for a lot less money and got almost no playing time. On the other hand you got Glen Rice who took less money and he did it at a time when he was still in his prime and he was a huge contributing part. he went from being the man in Charlotte/Miami can’t remember to being a contributing bench player and got a ring. Every player is different but it amazes me that AI has been compensated well financially yet he would choose ending his career as a non-champion just because his ego cannot handle playing with a contender while coming off the bench. That is the reason why I respect the Spurs. They tell vets upfront. “We can’t pay you what you want, but you will have a chance at a title”

Btw
Say what you want about Artest but he is making the same sacrifice that most players with his level of talent and star power rarely ever do. He has been tagged as crazy but there is a method to his madness. He himself said in his press-conference that if he can’t live off of the money he has made then there is something wrong with that. Not bad reasoning for someone who has been able to take less, will be a huge contributor for a huge chance at winning a ring. Even if he isn’t the center of attention. If that’s crazy then I would rather be compared to Artest than say…Shaq.

For Iverson it's not even star money any more
Memphis just made him an offer, and they’ve got something like $3.5 million under the cap right now. It’s not like Iverson’s going to get a star contract at this point anyway. He just can’t stomach coming off the bench, apparently. How’d you like to be Mike Conley, Jr., reading about Chris Wallace making offers to The Answer?
(Lots of teams, contenders and bottom-feeders too, have come to the same conclusions about A.I. at the moment. With the Spurs, my respect begins at Duncan — the ego-light star who’s lasted through two sets of championship talent around him, winning all the while.)
Exactly
It’s not like Iverson’s going to get a star contract at this point anyway.
That is exactly why I don’t understand this. He has made his “star money” already. I cannot believe that someone’s ego could be that big.

Kobe can do whatever he wants
but i think he just lost a ring by not having his finger fixed threw surgery. i dont understand why the best player in the game would want to taint his legacy, his prime, his chance to win multiple rings by not getting the surgery. he says hes accustomed to how it feels now but how many of you remember game 5 in orlando where kobe was wincing in pain and looked like he might miss some game action. kobes a solider and the greatest of all time by far but come on kobe fix yo fingers bro

Did it cost him a ring in 2009?
He hurt it in 2008, and decided against surgery. Nothing new. It will only cost him a ring if he can’t fit on past his knuckle.
I’m pretty sure Kobe is well aware of his own threshold.
I agree
After four titles Kobe need had an injury the hurt the Lakers. It’s not like he can do it on “company time” because he works out all the time so he is always on “company time” wait a minute that does remind of someone who did cost us a title for not getting operated on earlier.

yeah but Kobe's injury is his finger
which he’s been able to play with since March 2008 when he first dislocated. Albeit, he’s down two fingers now since then, if the man can still play and feels surgery will mean less time to bond with the team, then no surgery it is. Look at Pau’s thumb injury, it’s gonna sideline him for at least 3 weeks. Kobe probably doesn’t want to risk having to wait longer than 3 weeks for two of his fingers to heal lol

His ring finger looks painfully gross
but I know it’s his pinky that needs the surgery. He had “a complete tear of the radial collateral ligament, an avulsion fracture, and a volar plate injury at the MCP joint” at his pinky in February 2008
and then he also dislocated his ring finger against the Cavs in January 2009.
I have to say his dislocated ring finger looks for some reason a lot worse than his pinky :/

Citing Paul’s career averages is silly when he isn’t in his prime anymore and he actually has to share some points these days.
Calling Artest the best defender in the NBA is also kind of silly when he was probably the third best defender on his team last year.

At that meeting, he told me that my leg was not OK and that I was behind the team. He also told me I didn’t have a "bond" with the team since I had spent time away from them for my treatment, and that he doesn’t want me on the team.
