Kobe's expensive website?

                             Congratskobe_medium

Kobe's expensive website - Ball Don't Lie - NBA - Yahoo! Sports
Hell, just a few weeks ago, I was termed a Kobe "hater" just for pointing out that Lamar Odom(notes) (as a way to point out just how brilliant Odom is) had a better plus/minus last season than Kobe. Doesn't mean he's better than Kobe, it just means ... ah, it doesn't matter. I mentioned Bryant's name. That's enough for 600 comments. It stinks.

I work at this stuff, and it's pretty numbing to be lumped in with message board mugs when I'm watching and re-watching and re-re-watching games, only to call him a 9.7 out of 10, and see nothing but vitriol aimed my way as a result.

But this, I'm sorry, we can all agree on it. There's absolutely no reason why the Kobester should be charging $25 for admission to his own website.

(Click the link to read the whole article....)

I'm afraid I have to disagree with KD on this.  While he may find it reprehensible for Kobe to charge for his site, KB24.com, I see it as a precaution.

While loved by many, no other player generates as much hatred as much as Kobe, so charging a fee filters out the trolls who would visit just to leave disparaging comments.  Would you pay to be a member of a site just to "diss" a player?  I wouldn't and I doubt anyone else would.

As always, Kobe's circumstances and situation is different than the average player.  There is a very good reason.  His site should be a place where Kobe fans can enjoy their favorite player while not having to worry about the Kobe hater sure to ruin the party.

I think that this was some other guy’s decision to charge 25.

If it was indeed Kobe’s decision, then it’s probably just his way of getting himself, and his website, more attention. This isn’t anything surprising.

4 championships and counting ...

Yeah, Kobe didn't make this decision...

…he has so much media and stuff he just turns the reigns over almost entirely to his “people”. Also, you make a good point in that it could be there to keep the flamers out.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

by Justin N. on Aug 11, 2009 12:32 PM PDT reply actions

Is it worth $25 to you not to be trolled and flamed?

I think I’d set the price on that a while lower, and probably entirely in terms of “opportunity costs.”

As in, “Maybe I’ll miss something by avoiding unmoderated RealGM forums where ‘bits’ hang out, but it isn’t worth it to me to wade through that stuff. Guess I’ll choose sites with some moderation and a general expectation of civil conversation instead.”

I prefer to think there must be some incredible content on that there egotastical Kobe site. It must be amazing. Like, karaoke tapes of Bryant, or home videos of him getting his pate shorn, or something. Something worth $25. What it is, I cannot imagine — other than the labor involved in some hanger-on working on his Flash skills, that is.

by feral on Aug 11, 2009 6:03 PM PDT up reply actions

It's called a "price point".

If he charges more, nobody pays. If he charges less, he gets douchebags fans like you showing up and talking crap.

BTW……WTF are “egotastical” and “pate shorn”???

I'd believe that if I thought

that Kobe really was frequenting his own site, and needing to be protected from “fans” in that setting. Or that Kobe’s fans had some sort of dearth of Lakers- and Kobe-centric boards to post on without extreme harassment…. Or something.

I guess I prefer to think he’s trying to control access in a broader way, in terms of memorabilia, autographs, and personal appearances. That stuff. Otherwise I have to imagine that Kobe Bryant has some media provided on the site that he or somebody in his circle thinks is worth $25 for us to join. The latter is a stretch. (It’s a stretch for me even with the songs for bands. Prince is so 1984.)

Oh, and:
Pate: the top of your head.
Shorn: A haircut, as in a sheep being shorn. This was a reference to ’Melo’s haircut last offseason.
“Egotastical”: a playful and I thought pretty innocuous reference to the self-centeredness of pro athletes.
Douchebag: For more inflammatory and trollish than anything I’ve said here, friend. I don’t stoop to “WTF,” even. And you’re the civility police. Riiiiight.

not “egotastical” as you call it

Funny, when you said egotastical (whatever that is) you failed to mention any other pro athletes. Must have been an oversight.

I still don’t quite see what your response has to do with my “price point” idea, but apparently you do.

As far as the douchebag comment, maybe it wasn’t my finest hour. We will see if you prove me wrong.

I thought your Prince comment was pretty funny though, so kudos for that.

It used to be $40

But they do some pretty cool stuff. I know members (not personally) that got to go to a meet and greet and get some stuff signed. I also know they’ve given away Laker tickets which is pretty cool. Personally though, $25 aint worth it. I would rather come here for free and talk about all the Lakers then pay $25 to talk about one.

As a member...

aren’t you allowed to join the site for free? You get to post on his messageboard and stuff, but you don’t get access to the free t-shirts, contests, etc.

or at least … that’s what I remembered it was like a year ago when I joined (before they revamped his website). I didn’t have to pay the member fee, but I did get to post on the message boards.

I don’t know if the rules changed or not. But it was pretty cool, talking to Kobe fans all around the world – I believe it was around the Olympics time so we had a lot of fun rooting for Kobe and Team USA.

if the membership fee is there, it might be a way to discourage haters/spammers/flamers from posting on the website.

although i have to admit the original fee which was between 40 and 50 dollars is too steep. Still, I’ve seen the pictures of those fans getting to meet kobe personally and all that fun stuff, so I can see the incentive.

You know it’s truly the offseason when people like Kelly Dwyer (who’s a pompous monkey butt) have nothing better to do than talk about how expensive or not expensive it is to be a member on Kobe Bryant’s website.

I mean YAWN wake me up when the season starts. How is this even relevant news? (not criticizing you wondahap)

And who is he to say whether an athlete charges membership fees or not? Leave the man alone and write about more important NBA analysis.

He complains that people disagrees with him, yet he says, “we can all agree” … please, stop assuming for everyone. your word is not the law and no one has to agree with you. that’s why you write columns, to generate discussion. Sorry for the rant, but the guy bothers me a lot.

Trust me.

It’s hard to do the links sometimes, because there’s nothing good right now. Kurt Rambis going to Minny just might be the last bit of relevant news until training camp. Unless Pau is hurt worse than diagnosed. God forbid.

KD and Henry Abbott must be related, because this is OLD news but yet he feels the need to stand on his pulpit. He’s just finding out now? I highly doubt it. It’s just a jab at Kobe in a time where his image is gleaming. They have to come up with something I guess. Now, I’m wondering what nonsense Krolik is scribbling up, or how Friedman angrily slams them all for it.

by wondahbap on Aug 11, 2009 3:41 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I know

That website membership fee thing has always been existance, I don’t understand why KD is dragging it up.

I mean seriously, last year, I remember joining the KB website and we had the option of paying for the membership fee, but if we didn’t, it was okay because we were still able to post on the forums and stuff. Later they revamped the site and made us re-registed, but I believe we still didn’t have to pay that membership fee if we didn’t want to. That membership fee is only for the folks that want to have that exclusiveness of winning kobe related stuff to join.

I totally understand why Friedman has beef with KD, Krolik and all the other writers that are all high and mighty on their work. It’s kinda ridiculous how many times KD needs to remind his readers how much basketball footage he wants. WE get it, he’s a devout b-ball fan therefore his word is god.

Seriously, can’t the dude let Kobe enjoy his cloud 9 championship glow summer without having to criticize how his website his run?! It’s ridiculous.

Don't bands have similar ideas?

I read this article this morning and immediately disagreed—while I feel like people will nitpick anything Kobe does, this is an action that is not uncommon.

I know that a lot of bands have fan clubs that are endorsed by the bands and offer swag, a private forum, and an opportunity every once in a while to meet the group…why can’t an athlete do the same thing?

The more I think about it, the more I feel like it is a cool idea (though I’d never do it…maybe…must resist). KD is just a KB hater.

Bands have content in the form of songs that they provide access to, right?

Prince had some sort of gaudy site he charged for entry to, and he peddled song files there.

by pslakerfan on Aug 11, 2009 6:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Huh. Didn't expect that.

Actually I find this curious partly because I know a couple of pro athletes, quite minor ones, who have a heck of a time trying to control fan access. They’re harassed all day long when they go out. And these guys are not, not, not Kobe Bryant.

The thing is, I don’t think this is like a band controlling access to its songs. Not unless Kobe has significant media available on his site that people really want to see, which seems questionable. It sounds like he’s controlling fan access in a broader way, which is novel.

In a sense there’s a “keep out the bits” aspect to this idea, but I don’t think that’s a Web thing per se either. As I said above a second ago, there are plenty of ways to keep out the ruffians who really do troll message boards, all without charging a steep entry fee. This site would be an example, right?

This policy also strikes me as antithetical to what loads of pro athletes are doing right now. Shaq’s out there looking for attention (surprise) on Twitter, you know? Whereas Kobe’s got a doorman. I have a sort of love-hate reaction to the dribs and drabs of access we supposedly get to celebrities’ inner lives, and I think that’s interesting.

(But please, continue your bristling defense against no attack whatsoever….)

this is pretty lame. charging people to visit his website? i don’t like this at all. as for what wondahbap said, i disagree. criticism comes with being a high profile athlete. he’s under the microscope and certain decisions he’s made in the past as well as his own character are reasons that people are critical of him. should they have the right to post their displeasure? absolutely. this is a democracy; people’s opinions, whether good or bad, should be heard. this is as bad as lebron’s confiscation of those “dunk” tapes. maybe kobe should keep his mouth shut and not take a poke at lebron, especially now that he himself has taken another misstep.

lol i dont see what the big deal is? he pays people to maintain his website, so why should he have to pay out of pocket for a service he doesnt even need to provide.

It’s not like people are missing out on anything life changing by not being able to get into his website, and if they are, props to Kobe for giving the people something worth paying for.

Supply and demand people. If no one pays for it, it’ll go away and you wont have anything to complain about. Kobe does alot of charitable work as it is, so we really dont have a reason to complain about not being able to see whatever he has in there.

like jxanthony said

band fan clubs do the same thing.

Linkin Park, etc. they all offer the same shebang kobe’s offering and member pay the same type of fees for the exclusiveness of it all.

What KB24.com is doing isn’t that much different.

and I don’t get why you’re telling Kobe to keep his mouth shut and how he’s taken “another misstep” considering it’s just his own website and he hasn’t really said anything about it.

The only person making a big deal about the site’s membership fee is Kelly Dwyer and wondahap was making a rebuttal against Dwyer’s argument.

I don’t see what’s there to get a huff about against Kobe and then dragging up his own “character reasons” because first of all, wondahap is only make a conjecture as to why there is a membership fee.

It’s partially there to give “diehard” fans a chance to be up and close with Kobe. And it’s also to weed out the nonfans.

It’s what all bands do for their fans as well.

And Kobe’s not charging people to visit his website. He’s only charging them to join his website and be a member. There is a difference. You can still visit his website and read the news/press releases.

Again, bands also have songs

Web sites are a natural delivery method for song files. You pay your membership, you get access to that specific content.

This is a somewhat different model, whatever it is. It wouldn’t shock me to see other athletes go to it, controlling stuff like autograph hound access. They get deluged with attention from people who really don’t care that much about them….

it makes him seem full of himself, that’s what bothers me. for a guy who has been trying to rehabilitate his image, and his pretty much succeeded in doing so, i fee is a bad PR move. should we roll the red carpet for him as well, and maybe be forced to pay extra in games he scores over 40? i mean come on, he’s already a rich man no need to get greedy. regardless, it isn’t something i’d pay for. i’m simply speaking out for those who are in fact in love with him. as great as he is, he’s just another person and just another player to me.

The membership fee is for diehard fans who want a chance to get up and close with Kobe.

Who knows what he does with that money besides maybe donating it to his KB fund, or using to pay the people who run his website, or using it to give prizes to people.

Who knows?!

And it’s not a BAD PR MOVE because that website charging membership thing has been there FOREVER. People do have a choice whether to be a member and pay or not pay the fee. It’s not like he’s forcing people to fork 40 dollars over for visiting his site.

Relax about judging Kobe so harshly. The dude just won a championship, ya think he really cares about a few extra dollars? The guy is on cloud 9.

Who Cares whether he charges or doesn't charge

It is so easy to pass judgement especially about money when everything in this country revolves around money. I just think that it is a bit hypocritical to look at this in a negative way when in reality half of the people judging him would do the exact same thing. I could care less about the fee. The best part about it is that I have a choice of whether or not I want to pay it. I for one would pay 25 dollars to be a member of his site.

It is funny how when Kobe’s video came out about him talking shit about Bynum how Laker fans ridiculed him. Especially for him wanting to leave. But when he didn’t restructure his contract so that the Lakers could sign both Ariza and Odom he also got judged. What is it? Do you want him to get involved in management decisions or don’t you? Truth is, no matter what he does (even amongst Laker fans) he can never satisfy everyone. Let the man do his thing. He got us 4 Championship banners. That will last me a life time. I got 4 DVD’s of memories to prove it. I could care less about a miserable 25 dollars. If that is the price to pay to show support for him and the Lakers than so be it.

That's random

Where did the Patriots come from? But then again, I’m an Eagles fan.

robi s u sound like a bandwagon fan. patriots, angels, ducks, and the lakers are all recent champs. look at me, i’m a bills fan, a dodgers fan, and lakers fan. with the exception of the lakers, the other two teams have struggled (the former mightily) for many years. although the dodgers seem to be on track this year. ;) oh and gators fan too. loved danny wuerffel and spurrier. 2 out 4 is not bad, but not as suspicious as having a favorite team who happens to have won their sport’s title within a close amount of time of each other. lol

by chaucer on Aug 11, 2009 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

anyhow, as soon as we get a pro team in Los Angeles, i’m in. i wouldn’t mind if it were the bills who relocated to L.A. their future is up in the air.

by chaucer on Aug 11, 2009 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions

its not my fault my teams have all gone on to win… Ive been an angels fan before they were even remotely good. Discarcina and Finely were my favorite players growing up. As for hockey I grew up on Guy Herbert and Kariya. What can I say the OC teams just know what they are doing. Is it a coincidence perhaps. Is there something in the water making OC people better than everyone else? yes. jk lol I definately can see how u cant perceive it to be bandwagoning, but trust me I definately had to put in my years of frustration with all those teams. Karma is just making its way back around to me.

Aside from the OC connection, I’ve been supporting the pats since they had bledsoe at the helm. I liked the pats because my sister went to school in boston, and i would go visit her often there and id always go see games with her and her friends.

amen.. who cares either way

i would never pay $25, but if some people want to pay then let them pay.. if kb24.com wants to charge let them charge- seems the market dictated the rational price since it came down. frankly i’m not that interested in official player sites because what is there that is truly original.. i want analysis and commentary… i don’t expect objective commentary from an official player site, just fan stuff.

why would anyone be personally offended? just because he makes a lot of money? so what? the website is supposed to be a “reward” to the fans? giving back? there are many ways that players can give back… i’d take kobe to task more if he didn’t “give back” in those other ways, and not make this artificial outrage over a fricking website.

sidenote: i personally think that adonal foyle’s website is the best player site around- yes, it’s free, but the content is original and it’s from foyle…

An update on Pau.

According to Lakers spokesman John Black, Pau Gasol had surgery earlier this week in Spain to repair a torn volar plate on the index finger of his left hand. Gasol will wear a splint for three weeks, when the Spanish National Team hopes that he can return to play for his country in the European Championships.

The Lakers expect to have an update on Gasol’s progress and return status in approximately three weeks.

In related news, Gasol spoke to Lakers Athletic Trainer Gary Vitti early Tuesday morning, determining that Vitti will travel to Barcelona at the end of the month to see Gasol.

And another minor update. The injury doesn’t seem to be too serious.

Lakers forward Pau Gasol told reporters in Spain on Tuesday that he expects to play in the European championships, beginning Sept. 7 despite suffering what the Lakers described as a “torn volar plate” in his left index finger while practicing with the Spanish national team.

“We obviously know how important it is for him to play for Spain,” Lakers spokesman John Black said. “As long as there’s not a risk of him furthering the injury, we don’t have a concern.”

Problem: Don't like Kobe's site and don't want to pay

Solution: Don’t pay, and don’t visit.

oh, Kelly Dwyer...

Resorting to the veiled ad hominem

I love it (read, “I despise it”) when someone writes something like “We can all agree that [insert something that is evidently designed to be controversial],” because the clear implication is that if you don’t agree, you must be some kind of moron who reads his basketblog over dialup from your trailer park in East Podunkville. Sometimes it slips out (goodness knows it happens enough when I write), but you still try to avoid it.

I’m a big believer in market forces for this kind of thing. If people end up liking it, it won’t make a dingo’s kidneys’ worth of difference what Kelly Dwyer thinks, and if they don’t, he won’t have had a thing to do with it. But the idea that there’s something intrinsically wrong with having a premium section on a player’s Web site—well, as Kelly Dwyer might say, only a moron would think that.
