POLL: Off-Season Brain-Teaser

Although NBA rosters are still being firmed-up for the coming season, we are now in the doldrums of the doldrums of the offseason and I have a little brain-teaser for all y’all to keep your NBA analyst skills sharp.

In 2009 Yao Ming was the starting center for the Western Conference All-Star Team and Shaquille O’Neal was the back-up center.  Unfortunately, Yao is out for the season and Shaq has been traded to the Eastern Conference Cavaliers.  So I want all you brainiac’s out there to tell us who will be the STARTING center for the 2010 Western Conference All-Star Team.

Star-divide

Below I’ve listed the teams in order of their 2009 finish along with names of their centers.  I’m not familiar with all the rosters so forgive me if I listed the wrong person(s).  Just leave a comment and I’ll try to update it if needed.  And I did combine some of the non-playoff teams to shorten the poll.  Good luck because I haven’t been able to figure it out myself yet.

Please note: The poll question is NOT “who is the best center in the west?”  (If you want to discuss that in the comments, feel free.)  I specifically asked about starting in the all-star game which is based on fan voting.  So it involves some interesting wrinkles beyond just ability like popularity, small-market vs. big-market, etc.

andrew bynum...oh boy

i voted for him…but honestly its tight. al jefferson is REALLY good as well. but if bynum can play like he did last year before his injury (that one month he basically dominated) then he will get in. also lets not forget he is in LA

It depends on if bynum gets injured, but im going with bynum and nene. with nene most likely being the starter.

I love Bynum, but Al Jefferson is the cream of that crop.

knowing the nba however they are going to move duncan, or stoudamire to the center position so that both duncan, nowistki can start for the west lol

the WCF allstars next year will be

CP3, Kobe, Carmelo, Nowtiski, Duncan

bench: Dwill, Billups/Nash/Parker (whichever one isnt injured lol), Roy, Durant, Artest, Pau, and Stoudamire.

If they don’t let duncan be a center, either jefferson or bynum. The lakers could potentially have 4 all stars this year in that scenario.

Duncan or Gasol will get moved to center probably

not many solid choices

I’m not sure Jefferson is even a C. And let’s not forget, Yao will most likely be voted the starter, regardless of his injury. In every sport, All-Star fan votes usually select the most popular players, regardless of production. Some people won’t even realize Yao is injured. Maybe the NBA will do us all a favor and leave him off the ballot? Probably wishful thinking.

If Yao remains, and get’s voted, then most likely selected to “start” will be Duncan. If Yao is off this list, then Bynum might win, but Jefferson, if listed as Center, might instead.

Jefferson is a PF that plays out of position and I've come around to the idea that Pau's best position is C...

So, ironically, both those guys could make the team “out of position”…

hahha well its not really fair that yao get all of chinas 3 billion people voting for him online lol

by robi s on Aug 1, 2009 11:31 PM PDT up reply actions

im thinking Kobe will get the most votes out of anyone next year judging from the olymipics, and his latest chinese tour. They love him over there

by robi s on Aug 1, 2009 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions

By the way, there are ~1.3 billion people in China (1,338,612,968 – July 2009 est.) From CIA World Factbook

During the Olympics they said that there are more people who play basketball in China than the entire population of the US – ~300 million plus.

hahah its called an exageration lol. but thank you for giving me the exact number lol. I like saying 3 billion better, its more impactful lol.

Also, if the olympics taught me anything, the chinese people are scary mf’ers. That drum thing during the opening ceremonies was crazzyyyyy

LA is big and nobody from the list is decisively better than the others..

If Tim Duncan gets listed as a Center, it will be him.

La is also a Pf. If they are going to move anyone out of position itll be duncan, seeing how on the fantasy list he is listed as a choice to play center

AL JEFFERSON

He is seriously underrated. Watch some clips of him; he’s like Hakeem with his ball fakes and footwork. Although the All-Star contest is a popularity contest, so Bynum would have an edge …

Still, Bynum and Okafor (playing with CP3 should give him All-Star stats) would deserve to come behind Jefferson, with Greg Oden as a dark-horse candidate if he finally has his breakout year.

by nilwnah on Aug 2, 2009 9:48 PM PDT reply actions

lol if AL jefferson is considered a C, then Duncan/Stoudmire will be considered centers.

by robi s on Aug 3, 2009 12:03 AM PDT up reply actions

AJ plays C though because Love is the PF

His minutes have swung from PF to C slightly more in each of his NBA seasons.
