Yahoo! Report: Brown to Re-Sign With Lakers

Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski, who's become an excellent source for breaking NBA stories, just Tweeted that the Lakers have reached a deal with Shannon Brown to re-sign the reserve guard for two years and $4.2 million. Brown brings depth, youth and athleticism to the Lakers at a very reasonable price, making this an excellent little roster move.

Welcome back, Shannon. We're pleased to have you back in the fold.

So I guess we did use our biannual exception on shannon. I guess (besides Lamar) we won’t be signing anybody through free agency.

this is good news. however, i would have liked this to happen after we secure lamar odom. have the lakers even made an offer? they better not be planning on letting him walk like ariza…

adrian woj…lol..that reminds me, u once asked why i got banned from the cavs blog on sb nation. the reason being is that i posted a link on two of their threads to a story by adrian wojnorowski in which he ripped lebron james. that was a great piece he wrote. couldn’t be more true. it was a classic, i hope many of u guys read it.

thanks, that one is it. however, i remember the original one having said “kiss his ass” and this one says “kiss his feet” i’m guessing he thought it sounded too harsh and edited after publishing it.

I'm also sure it was "ass", not "feet"

I read it at least thrice when it came out.
Well I guess he had to tone it down a little.

It's a fantastic article

The moment chaucer mentioned it, I knew which one he was referring to. It’s right on the money, too.

Pretty pathetic to be banned for linking to a Yahoo! Sports article.

Is there any benefit to using that exception

instead of an ordinary 2 yr deal?

And are you certain the Lakers used the exception? Perhaps they simply decided to match another team’s biannual exception offer.

by ignign*kt on Jul 6, 2009 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the reason they would use the biannual is because Brown didn't have Bird rights, if I'm not mistaken.

Bird rights require a player to play three years with the same team, though they follow a player if he is traded. After his second year in the NBA, he became a free agent and signed with Charlotte for the veteran’s minimum, which is what he earned last year as a Laker. I’m not 100% on this, but I’m pretty sure the most the Lakers could offer him was the biannual, since they used their entire MLE on Artest.

And intuitive, the Lakers can still sign a free agent if they want/need to. They just can’t pay him more than the veteran’s minimum.

by Darkemans on Jul 6, 2009 9:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Getting a good veteran at the vets minimum seems unlikely. Yeap, the Lakers don’t have Shannon’s bird rights

Awesome

Shannon Brown is great. Such a humble guy. If anyone has seen his exit interview you will agree. I’m glad to have him. I’m just curious if the Lakers would not of prefferred to give that to Grant Hill to come off the bench at the 2 positiont behind Kobe instead of Sasha. Word is he is getting the same amnt that Shannon got from the Celtics and the Knicks.

great job by Mitch

got Shannon for a low price. I think Shannon’s impact on the Denver series was underrated, if you watch carefully, he was the defensive spark off the bench that harassed Chauncey at crucial points of the game, leading to big Laker runs. Hopefully he develops enough to become the starting point guard by year’s end.

Backup point guard Shannon Brown agreed today to a two-year deal with the Lakers, including a player option for the second year, worth $4.2 million, according to his agent Mark Bartelstein.

Brown was also talking to the Indiana Pacers about a more lucrative deal but decided to return to the Lakers, his agent said.

He made it seem that he has no clue as to why the Lakers went with Artest when the day after he was offered the MLE and told to look for another offer his agent said the following:

Ariza already has firm offers from several other teams, according to Lee, and will begin speaking with opposing coaches today. Asked if he could envision Ariza accepting a deal from another team without speaking to the Lakers again, Lee said, “Yes, we have no choice. That’s the position they’ve put us in.”

This is FANTASTIC news

I still believe there is rom for Farmar, but I think we all agree that Shannon Brown showed LOTS of potential. The kind of potential that, if realized, could shore up our PG problems. I can’t think of anywhere that he could better develop that potential. With UPS under the direct tutelage of Derek Fisher, with added coaching from Kobe Bryant, Derek Shaw, and of course, Phil Jackson, I have a lot of confidence that he can become an important and very valuable player for us.

I am SO relieved to learn that he’s coming back. And I feel great about this deal — it’s fair to Shannon, he gets the pay day he deserves, and yet it’s VERY reasonable for the Lakers… both in terms of cost, and (very important!) length.

Excellent move, I couldn’t be happier about this. I’m really quite thrilled with the way Kupchak is handling the off-season. He’s being realistic, reasonable, and making some really great deals. He’s improving this team without putting them in a financial fix (a la Orlando).

Kudos to Kupchak.

After going through training camp. The only thing stopping him from having a greater role in the rotation last year was that he simply didn’t know the system that well, and he still found ways to make the team better.

Sign-and-trade for Stackhouse’s partially guaranteed contract. Interesting move — does it mean they move Howard or try to make him play at two guard? Detroit is more than willing to part with Hamilton and Prince in exchange for 2010 flexibility, so Dallas definitely isn’t done yet.

At least the Lakers are not sitting still on the PG situation

If you remember the first move the Lakers made in the post season was that they tried to trade Farmar to the Rockets or they tried to trade the 1st round picks but the Rockets turned them down. So it is fair to say that they are willing to trade Farmar especially since they signed S. Brown I wouldn’t be surprised if the Lakers tried to move him. They actually also reached out to Kripto-Nates agent. Something is going to happen at the PG position I know it.

They got a huge expiring contract in Kwame and picked up Pau’s brother, who has been a pretty solid player.

You’re talking about us trading any combination of Farmar, Morrison, Vujacic, or Walton for Minnesota for Rubio. That’s so unrealistic my head hurts thinking about it. I’m not opposed to trade propositions in any fashion — they simply need to be based on some level of reality that is capable of being backed up by logical arguments. This isn’t.

Plus Rubio makes no sense

For our immediate title hopes. It’ll take time for him to adjust. Do we really want a young, very high turnover PG running this team? Because that’s what he’ll be. People who look at his clips on Youtube and proclaim him the next Pete don’t see the many awful passes and decisions he makes. He’s a kid. He’ll be a stud, but not immediately.

But the players you would have to give up to get Rubio would kill our chances of winning now. Every team would love to stock up on a potential superstar, but to get a player like Rubio you’d have to give up major, major assets. With all the hype surrounding him, I’m not sure there’s any player on our roster Kahn would take (Kahn also drafted Rubio and Flynn back to back, so I can’t pretend to understand the way his mind works).

It’s always nice to dream, but just not realistic. I like him quite a bit too. Maybe, hopefully, once his rookie contract expires (if he signs), he’ll be looking to sign with a storied franchise…? One with a history of a great passing PG? I would love to see that.

Instead of snapping up one of several lucrative offers he received the past few days, Brown deliberated over the weekend and accepted a deal from LA for fewer years and less pay. On Monday the 23-year-old guard agreed to a two-year, $4.2 million contract with a player option after the first season, agent Mark Bartelstein said.

“He got offered considerably more money by a couple other teams, but Mitch Kupchak, Phil (Jackson) and Dr. (Jerry) Buss did a tremendous job of recruiting him to come back,” Bartelstein said. “It also showed tremendous character by Shannon forgoing more money because he sees the chance to be something special. He took a lot less at a time when he hasn’t made a lot of money yet.”

http://www.pe.com/sports/basketball/lakers/stories/PE_Sports_Local_S_nba_notes_07.3d39825.html

Shannon’s agent actually listened to what Shannon wanted and let him decide. David Lee take notes, better yet Trevor should just fire him already

by intuitive on Jul 7, 2009 9:21 PM PDT reply actions

Trevor needs to have Shannon give him the number for his agent

Seriously though, this is also a very smart idea for Shannon Brown.

Let’s say, just to take a wild guess (I haven’t seen any numbers, so I’m making them up), that someone was willing to offer UPS something in the area of $20 million for 5 years. At $4 Million per, that’s almost double what he’s making now — and he’s got that guaranteed for several years. Seems like a great deal, especially for someone who has turned some heads, but is overall still fairly unproven.

But if you’re Shannon Brown, and you’re confident that you can deliver on the flashes of potential you’ve displayed, then I really like this move. Even financially. Why? Because he plays for a championship contender, and he gets the chance to really prove himself, develop, grow, become even better than he is now. Prove he can do this consistently, maybe even show himself to be starter material. All on a championship team, with TONS of exposure, and possibly winning a ring in the process.

And if he does that for a couple years, then in 2 short years he can re-negotiate, and he’ll have a lot more leverage than he has right now. So maybe he plays for $2.1 Mil a year now, but if he really proves himself to be solid in those 2 years, then he could potentially set himself up for a $6-7 M/year deal in the very near future.

Bottom line… Success in L.A. = Big Paycheck.

Go somewhere else, maybe you get better, but you’re not in L.A., so not as many people notice. You get your payday now… but if you stay in L.A., and up your game in the process, you get a chance to get an even bigger payday. And the length of the deal is perfect — just enough time to prove yourself worthy of a relatively lucrative contract, but short enough that you’re not sitting around playing for peanuts once you’ve already proven you’re worth more.

There is always danger

And not having really heard anything doesn’t exactly give us anything to quiet our fears.

But honestly, it’s just inconceivable in my mind that the Lakers would let him go. That, combined with the general consensus that no one out there is really offering him more than what the Lakers are reportedly offering him, and his expressed desire to retire a Laker, makes me feel pretty good about it.
