The big news is that Ariza may leave the Lakers, as linked by ryebreadraz below, and here:

  • Sources: Trevor Ariza leaning toward leaving Los Angeles Lakers - ESPN
The 24-year-old swingman, who played a key role in the Lakers' run to their 15th NBA championship, is on the verge of leaving the club, sources close to the situation said on Wednesday. With at least five teams pursuing Ariza, the Lakers are currently unwilling to pay him more than the $5.6 million mid-level exception. "They're letting him go," one of the sources said.

This has prompted rumors of the Lakers pursuing Artest, and vice versa

  • Is Ron-Ron really coming? - Lakers blog - OCRegister.com
If you checked one Twitter account supposedly belonging to Ron Artest, the tempermental swingman left Houston and was headed to either L.A. His messages are cryptic, but suggestive. “THANKS A LOT HOUSTON :) I HAD A LOT OF FUN.”

Not many other links to report on, the Pistons signed Gordon and Charlie V, the Blazers want Hedo, and a bunch of rumors. Where will Sheed end up?

But for the restricteds, who mostly negotiate aware that the original team will match any reasonable offer sheet, this is the unique moment.

and posted this in the post below, but everyone should read this. His agent is blowing smoke in an effort to make the Lakers over pay.

Look, don’t get me wrong. There’s certainly a chance that Team Ariza and Team Buss are planning a trip to Impasse County. But there’s also a chance- my gut says a better one- that we’re getting another taste of how Lee operates: Lots of public complaints and barely veiled threats. Little in the way of clients leaving their most recent employers. Maybe I’m under-thinking this, but most of these scenarios floated around strike me as either unrealistic, undesirable or both.

I don’t think we’d be able to offer him anything more than the MLE. I hope we wouldn’t sign him for anything more anyway. I think Artest is bluffing though. His tweets are similar to Amar’e’s tweets of coming to the Lakers. Would you like him to play for LA? I never was a bhuge fan of his.

Artest would be a good plan B if the Lakers could not agree to terms with Ariza

Of course, I am assuming Kobe and Phil would keep him in line on the offensive end.

I'd like artest over grant hill

Artest isn’t as old as hill and has shown he’s still a player and especially a defender. Grant Hill is a mere shadow of what he once was

Yeah but if he wanted to come here he would be very cheap. Plus he’s a class act. He wouldn’t be a long term replacement though

by intuitive on Jul 1, 2009 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

    Hill is a consumate vet

and a great teammate. His skills are still decent, better than Luke Walton’s, for example. I’d take Hill over Artest any day, because with Crazy Pills, we’d always have a chance of him suddenly throwing a wrench in the team chemistry midway through the playoffs.

Personally, I’d like to see Artest end up in Cleveland. Could that team suddenly become any bigger and slower? They got beat up with size, but they got FAT size. I mean, look at this roster!! Big Z, Shaq, Lebron, Ron-Ron… could they get any slower? They might be the most physical team, and a great matchup for Boston, but the Lakers and Magic will still run circles around them and jump higher than them.

This whole thing is Ariza's agent (David Lee) doing...

Has everyone already forgot that David is also Bynums’s agent and how aggressive and upset he was that the Lakers were taking so long to sign Bynum? His first tactic was to use the media. I would not be surprised at all if Chris Broussard’s “source” was David Lee. Chris gets gets his breaking news story and David tries to stretch the arm of the Lakers.

We all need to remember how hard we have all been on Kupchak for over paying for both Luke and Sasha. I think he is doing the right thing. He is only being a wise business by saying, “I don’t know what the market’s going to be”. In other words, why pay more than the mid-level exception which is what most teams can offer him. I am sure that the Lakers organization is asking him to come back with a higher offer so that the Lakers could counter offer. This is a business but if he forces the Lakers to keep Odom and sign Artest then so be it. Let’s see who blinks first.

    http://www.nba.com/2009/news/features/fran_blinebury/07/01/blinebury.yao/index.html

Now, after consulting with the Rockets’ medical staff and a handful of specialists on the East Coast, a decision has been made to have Yao undergo surgery once more to repair the stress fracture in the tarsal navicular bone of his left foot, according to several sources. What has not yet been determined is the exact method for the repair.

By having the surgery soon, the hope is that Yao will be able to return to the basketball court by the second half of the 2009-10 season and possibly be at full strength for the playoffs.

According to a Twitter post by Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Trevor Ariza will become a very rich man at the hands of the team that loses out on Hedo Turkoglu.

League executives believe Portland or Toronto, whichever team does not sign Turkoglu, will offer Ariza between $32 million and $40 million deal.

by intuitive on Jul 1, 2009 11:51 PM PDT reply actions

    I hate Twitter

“League executives believe” is hardly something that I can go off of. I was just reading this on Yahoo. On one hand everyone who is considered a news reporter is trying to fight to be the first to break the Ariza news. If Ariza gets that offered to him then I say first off for how long is the deal for and then the Lakers could go from there. As long as the deal averages out to 6.5 million a year at the most then I say match it. If not, let him walk. As I said before, I would rather keep LO and sign Artest for the MLE. Eventhough Ariza is young this Laker team needs players that can help the Lakers win during Kobe’s prime. Who knows when we will be fortunate to win a title after Kobe leaves.

by chaucer on Jul 2, 2009 12:01 AM PDT reply actions

Why I'm now worried about Ariza leaving...

I am tired of hearing these supposed rumors about Ariza. It is fun for discussion but there has not been any solid or concrete proof that Ariza will leave the Lakers. I am sure of one thing and that is that if Ariza was really serious about wanting to return to the Lakers and that he is going to treat this as a business deal then both he and his agent would contact the Lakers once an offer bigger than the MLE is on the table. The key words are “Market Value” so until his true value is made by an actual offer I know that Ariza will at least give the Lakers the chance to match it. Why in the world would Kupchak and the Lakers commit to a price higher than the MLE? His agent must show that his client is worth it considering all the barking that he is doing.

I’m still not over it!

Ariza "leaving" is just a negotiating ploy.

If he was really upset, and wanted to leave, he would.

Him not being happy with the Lakers offer wouldn’t be an issue. It is because he wants to be Laker and wants as much as he can get. Simple.

he shanghaied mitch into overpaying byum, now he’s trying to do the same. like i said, i would be ok with the lakers paying trevor 6.5-7 million a year. because he brings something to the floor that neither bynum, walton, nor sasha have brought tot his day—energy and hustle.

    i think the thing is...

we’d pay him 6.5-7 mil if we werent in the luxury so bad. the reason we can only give the MLE is because if we go over the mle 5.6 to say 6.5 we’re actually paying more like 13 million because of taxes

i doubt he’ll be as effective a player on another team that lacks star players. keep in mind he only averaged 8.9 pts a game. regardless, it was the little things he did on the court that made him a fan favorite. i wonder if he’ll be able to do the same for a team with less stars. some players are simply role players. his function was the former on a team featuring two marquee players (gasol and bryant). the attention they demand gave him the freedom to hit those 3s and slash to the rack. what would he do in houston? he could possible average 15 pts a game, but who knows…

because those same teams are gonna give him the same amount of money and the Lakers are trying to keep the team together, Trevor has to recognize that and give the Lakers a break. I wouldn’t be that mad if he leaves but Lakers will just have to make sure they replace him.

    trevor's not worth the money

i love ariza, he’s one of my favorite players on the team, but you cannot give a guy like this 9 mil. i know he played excellent defense, hell, he’s probably our 2nd best defender behind kobe, but that offensive explosion he had in the post season basically came from being left open behind the three point line due to playing with the greatest player in the game.

and i hate to say it, but i really hope cleveland makes the mistake of taking ariza over odom in the FA market. artest carried the rockets though their great playoff run this year, while ariza basically just sat back and banged wide open threes. the only thing on trevor’s side is his upside. but when it comes to winning championships NOW, you go with the greater talent, whether it be odom in LA, or artest in cleveland. to me those are the two right moves for each team respectively.

by tdp992 on Jul 2, 2009 2:18 PM PDT reply actions

    Mitch knows what he's doing

In the end, Ariza is not going to get the money he wants. Maybe around $6.5 million, but the Lakers knew what they were doing in their first offer.

Lee, Trevor’s agent, has tried the “everybody has interest in Ariza” tactic. The problem is, it doesn’t make sense. Cleveland and Houston are both over the cap and cannot offer more than the MLE. Only Cleveland is a championship contender. Portland, on the other hand, can offer more than the MLE, but they, like Cleveland, want someone else. Both are using Ariza as countershots to Hedo and Artest negotiations. Portland dangles the threat of signing Ariza instead of Hedo doesn’t cooperate, costing Hedo MILLIONS (no one else will sign him for what he wants except Portland). Cleveland on the other hand is threating Artest with the prospect of being stuck in Houston as the sole producer, because they would be just as happy with Ariza.

All of this is merely smoke signals, folks. Hedo’s going to Portland. Ariza’s staying in LA. So is Odom (no one he wants to play for can afford him except us, so checkmate.) The only real question is… does Artest really leave Houston for Cleveland?

    Gortat to the Mavs (possibly)

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4303432

Sources told ESPN.com that the Mavericks are bringing Gortat to town to tour the area and the team’s facilities after extending him an offer believed to be worth Dallas’ full mid-level exception — which could translate to a five-year deal starting at roughly $5.6 million — in hopes of dissuading the Orlando Magic from matching the offer.

Gortat averaged just 3.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last season and 3.3 points and 3.2 rebounds during the Magic’s run to the NBA Finals, but his opportunities in Orlando were limited behind All-Star center Dwight Howard.

Does Ariza have to sign a big deal now?

Can’t Ariza sign a shorter deal now — he’s only 24 — then pursue a big contract later? Fisher’s contract is off the books after next season, Sasha and Morrison the season after.

I don’t fault Ariza for wanting to cash in big right now seeing that his stock is at its highest ever, but I don’t see Ariza as a top 3 player on a team, which he will have to be if he leaves the Lakers. He could sign a $30-40M contract now, but what if the team he bolts for is languishing by the end of his deal? If there’s one thing he should’ve learned growing up a Lakers fan, it’s that this franchise is consistently contending for championships. His stock will only continue to rise playing for the Lakers providing him with an opportunity to seek an ever bigger deal than the one he is striving for now.

Artest shoots the 3 better when he’s not rushing it so if he’s spotting up and taking a pass from Kobe it’ll be a good shot. He’ll probably be asked to take his game to the post where he’s pretty damn good.

I would think resigning Ariza is out of the question if these talks about Artest are true. Not enough PT and $$ for the both of them. Although I wouldn’t mind shipping The Man formerly known as The Machine out to make room for TA.

I’m okay with taking shots away from Bynum. Just not from Pau.

This is a sad day for me I don't really want Artest, Ariza is a better fit and isn't he close to Kobe

I wonder what Kobe is thinking they just let go a friend for a foe.

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be commited against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the LimeLight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.

I think Ariza is a better fit in some ways, and Artest COULD be a better fit in other ways. Not sure how I feel about Artest playing with the Lakers though. I don’t think I’m a fan of signing him

ariza didnt want the deal and left. i bet artest took the deal ariza turned down.

Ariza's agent didn't want the deal and gave that unreasonable logic

as a reason: “Why won’t you pay $9m for a guy everyone will pay $5m for?”.

    Seriously David Lee?

    agents work for the player

not the other way, if ariza wanted to stay, he would have. bad advice from the agent helping ariza astray? of course, but in the end these athletes need to learn the agent works for them, not the other way around

    Where are all the people...

…who were BEGGING for LA to pick up Artest after losing to Boston last year?

His defense is still amazing and I feel he is a much more comfortable shooter than Ariza is.

I was one of those people then but not now Ariza is the man, I just thinks he fits the triangle system better

I’ll get over it once Lakers re-sign Odom and Shannon and win another championship.

So I wonder how Ariza really feels about this? Not Ariza’s agent, but Ariza

I was one of the lucky few to be invited to watch Game 5 vs. Denver at Metta World Peace's Private Party. He was very intense watching the game, and it was obvious that it bothered him a lot that he couldn't be there helping his teammates.

This is a video I took of Ron's reaction to Kobe's last shot at the buzzer to tie. Him raising his hands was the happiest I saw him during the whole game. I was hoping to record a great celebration.
