give the lakers credit, but the magic also played like crap. they are better than what they showed tonight. expect a closer game on sunday.

They missed a lot of 3’s that usually go in. Some good defense and some were just plain missed shots.

You win by the three and you die by the three

That is their bread and butter, however if you can’t make a lot of them you are in trouble.

Key: +14 on the boards

We just sandwiched Howard on the boards, 2-3 guys around him, and all 5 guys stayed around Howard to grab a tipped rebound. Complete focus on the boards, great execution.

Our defense really stepped up today

It all started in the second quarter. I was impressed the way Bynum and Gasol were playing Howard by getting him in foul trouble early.

Defense needs to step up again this Sunday

Orlando is going to bounce back in a big way. We have to make sure we’re mentally ready for it.

by hertagnism on Jun 4, 2009 9:01 PM PDT up reply actions

For sure

A lot of it was our defense, but a lot of it was just them missing shots they normally make. They’ll come back with a fury.

by Snoopy2006 on Jun 4, 2009 9:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed.

The Magic will definatly get their shot in. I hope we can play with this kind of attitude and intensity for the rest fo the series.

Oh, and they are also still bringing up the Kobe shooting over 20+ shots thing. I don’t think they can go one game without saying that.

I don't have cable so I am unable to watch ESPN

but I’m glad I didn’t. I would have thrown something at Wilbon and the man who got cut from the Lakers before they went on to win 3 straight titles.

by hertagnism on Jun 4, 2009 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't buy that "Orlando was off tonight"

mentality. I have seen enough baskeball in my life to know when the team that lost beat themselves but that wasn’t the case tonight. The Lakers just played good defense. I don’t want to hear this crap that involves not giving the Lakers defense enough credit. The Lakers swormed the 3 point line and Odom, Gasol and Bynum were too much to handle on the boards. I am so proud of the Lakers defense and they obviously wanted it more. You could tell at the shoot around that Kobe meant business. Let’s see everyone tommorow jump back on the bandwagon.

That could be said about both teams.

by PURPLE AND GOLD FOR LIFE on Jun 4, 2009 9:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Ture, however you have to give credit to the Laker defense.

They did miss open shots, yet due to the pressure the Lakers defense was using the Magic had to alter several shots and we really got them out of their game. I do however expect the Magic to to get hot from behind the arc. I hope our defense keeps up the pressure to limit that as much as possible.

Like Forrest said about these things

It might be both (the Lakers defense, and the Magic being off)

It might be both happening at the same time. The Magic definitely missed some wide open shots. But that could be because they never got in a rhythm since the Lakers were closing so well early in the game.

"This is not a game for boys. This is a game for men." - Phil Jackson

by Gils_Keloids on Jun 4, 2009 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

It was both

The Lakers D was great, but we helped a lot in the paint and there were still plenty of open looks. They won’t miss those 3 more games. I’d like to see less help on Howard and more staying at home on those 3-point shooters.

by Snoopy2006 on Jun 4, 2009 9:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Let's keep in mind.

The Magic still outshot the Lakers from beyond the arc.

Honestly, I think the Lakers did a pretty outstanding job. There was one possession that really defined our defense. Howard got the ball with good position, Lamar feigned help a little bit, Howard dished to Rashard at the wing three pointer. Lamar closed hard and chased him off the line into a step forward dribble two pointer that he’s obviously less comfortable with.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

He’s made good decisions, I don’t mind him much as a bench player. It is just the length of his contract, and how much salary space he eats up that makes me want more out of him. I guess thats unfair to Luke but sometimes I just cannot help it. Give him credit though, he has been solid in the last few games of the Denver series and tonight. Really helped steady the bench and get Pau/Bynum touches when they are in good position to score.

I think SVG made a mistake during halftime in his “wired” section where he said something about the Cavs being all about Lebron, and all they needed was to stop him. Then he said its the same thing for this series except now, this series is just “all about Kobe”

Just thought that comment was a little odd. This team is a lot more than just Kobe. The offense doesn’t center around Kobe like it does in the Cavaliers system.

I know but the Boston Celtics were 32-0 when leading 3-2 in a series, they lost to the Magic.
There have been 6 teams, in the conference finals, who have beat the best (record wise) team. All those teams went on to win the championship. The Orlando team is the 7th to beat the best team record wise which would be the Cavs.

At this point it is all about how the Lakers execute both on defense and offense.

I like our chances.

by intuitive on Jun 4, 2009 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions

BAH

The Celtics barely had any business playing the Magic, they should have been eliminated in 6, but the Magic collapsed at the end of game 5 for no reason. The Celtics were depleted and exhausted.

Now you guys have a team whose resolve has never been stronger. Coming off two convincing wins over Denver, your team definitely looks poised to keep their streak going. Yes intuitive, I’d say it’s only a matter of time now!!

My Thoughts on Game 1

Just some bullet points:
- We played Dwight almost perfectly, in fact, I would even drop the number of doubles we threw at him.
- Our rotations on their 3 pt shooters were generally crisp. Only a couple times were the Lakers looked confused (two guys rotating to one shooter, etc)
- Kobe is ruthless
- Jameer provided a quick emotional lift with his solid 2nd quarter play, but we did a good job on him and Rafer in the 2nd half
- The Magic shooting 29.9% is simply unbelieveable. They are much better than this and simply, for lack of a better phrase, shiat the bed tonight.
- Pau’s jumper looked as good as it’s looked all playoffs
- Have to keep the intensity for Game 2

I just checked Third Quarter Collapse

They’re trying to look at the bright side of things, such as the fact that it was just one game, and that historic streaks mean nothing, and that Jameer Nelson didn’t play too bad, and that they can shoot much better in game 2. Basically, they aren’t despairing yet.

Much more than the third quarter

Was the second quarter. I remember telling you guys that you need to prevent the Magic from exploding in the second quarter. They looked troublesome at first and led by 5 at one point, but then you guys turned up the intensity and went on a 10-0 run, contested shots, forced multiple turnovers and timeouts, ended the half with a 10 point lead and momentum that carried into the 3rd. I really think that second quarter was the difference in this game.

Why the Lakers defense deserves a lot more credit than "Just a bad game" for Orlando.

Orlando’s shooting percentage for the game was a terrible 30%, but their shooting percentage from 3 pt range was a respectable 35%. That’s lower than they shot against Cleveland, but still not terrible.

If Orlando had truly just been tight, the 3’s would have shown it more than anything. I know they missed some open ones, but they also made some contested ones. Holding a team to 28% shooting on two point shots? That’s just a spectacular defensive effort.

Over at Hardwood Paroxysm they make some good points

- You’re going to hear the "Die by the three" stuff. Don’t buy into it. That assumes the Magic would have cooled off anyway, and does a disservice to the Lakers defense.
- The Lakers used the paint as a headquarters. They centered there, and used it to spring out on passers, to disrupt passing lanes, to close out on shooters, and it was incredibly effective. Great defensive gameplan by Phil Jackson.

More bench production- Vujacic
And less Kobe Doing Work- He was great, got everyone involved but I would like to see more Lakers be as aggressive as Kobe was

We continue to build on game 1 and all I see is a trophy for the Lakers.Game 2 very important.
