25 point point win. 38 minutes for Kobe Bryant. Step back 3 pointer for Josh Powell. Nuff said.
Here's the box score and recap.

give the lakers credit, but the magic also played like crap. they are better than what they showed tonight. expect a closer game on sunday.
They missed a lot of 3’s that usually go in. Some good defense and some were just plain missed shots.
You win by the three and you die by the three
That is their bread and butter, however if you can’t make a lot of them you are in trouble.

Lakers lead NBA Finals 1-0
Key: +14 on the boards
We just sandwiched Howard on the boards, 2-3 guys around him, and all 5 guys stayed around Howard to grab a tipped rebound. Complete focus on the boards, great execution.
Our defense really stepped up today
It all started in the second quarter. I was impressed the way Bynum and Gasol were playing Howard by getting him in foul trouble early.

Defense needs to step up again this Sunday
Orlando is going to bounce back in a big way. We have to make sure we’re mentally ready for it.
For sure
A lot of it was our defense, but a lot of it was just them missing shots they normally make. They’ll come back with a fury.
Agreed.
The Magic will definatly get their shot in. I hope we can play with this kind of attitude and intensity for the rest fo the series.
Oh, and they are also still bringing up the Kobe shooting over 20+ shots thing. I don’t think they can go one game without saying that.

I don't have cable so I am unable to watch ESPN
but I’m glad I didn’t. I would have thrown something at Wilbon and the man who got cut from the Lakers before they went on to win 3 straight titles.
I don't buy that "Orlando was off tonight"
mentality. I have seen enough baskeball in my life to know when the team that lost beat themselves but that wasn’t the case tonight. The Lakers just played good defense. I don’t want to hear this crap that involves not giving the Lakers defense enough credit. The Lakers swormed the 3 point line and Odom, Gasol and Bynum were too much to handle on the boards. I am so proud of the Lakers defense and they obviously wanted it more. You could tell at the shoot around that Kobe meant business. Let’s see everyone tommorow jump back on the bandwagon.

Magic do shoot well from behind the arc, however the Lakers defend the three really well.

They missed a million open looks from the arc tonight. They were tight. I guarantee that won't happen again.

No more guarantees!
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from the NBA playoffs this year, it’s don’t make guarantees.

I disagree.
Let’s agree to disagree on that one.
"This is not a game for boys. This is a game for men." - Phil Jackson
That could be said about both teams.
It just depends whose side your on. I could easily say, “the Lakers could of won by 40” We have to give credit where credit is due.

Ture, however you have to give credit to the Laker defense.
They did miss open shots, yet due to the pressure the Lakers defense was using the Magic had to alter several shots and we really got them out of their game. I do however expect the Magic to to get hot from behind the arc. I hope our defense keeps up the pressure to limit that as much as possible.

Lakers lead NBA Finals 1-0
Like Forrest said about these things
It might be both (the Lakers defense, and the Magic being off)
It might be both happening at the same time. The Magic definitely missed some wide open shots. But that could be because they never got in a rhythm since the Lakers were closing so well early in the game.
"This is not a game for boys. This is a game for men." - Phil Jackson
It was both
The Lakers D was great, but we helped a lot in the paint and there were still plenty of open looks. They won’t miss those 3 more games. I’d like to see less help on Howard and more staying at home on those 3-point shooters.
Let's keep in mind.
The Magic still outshot the Lakers from beyond the arc.
Honestly, I think the Lakers did a pretty outstanding job. There was one possession that really defined our defense. Howard got the ball with good position, Lamar feigned help a little bit, Howard dished to Rashard at the wing three pointer. Lamar closed hard and chased him off the line into a step forward dribble two pointer that he’s obviously less comfortable with.
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.
Brian Shaw should stick around and be the Lakers coach when Phil decides to hang it up
He’s on NBATV right now talking with the crew about how the Lakers still need to make adjustments for Game 2, how there were things the Lakers did not do correctly.

Not sure about B Scott
He hasn’t learned how to keep his players ear. That is what is exceptional about Phil, I haven’t felt that his players have tuned him out after many years of coaching.

good point.

Shaw's the one in charge of preparing for the Magic
Each assistant coach has a particular team, the Magic is one of Shaw’s. So that’s probably why he sounds so knowledgeable, he’s scouted them all year long.
He also just said on NBATV
That before the series started he told the guys, if we can play him one-on-one and keep Howard from dunking and make him finish layups, the Magic can be beat.
"This is not a game for boys. This is a game for men." - Phil Jackson
I saw a guy come out of the crowd as Kobe was walking into the tunnel after game end
He was really excited, and patted Kobe on the back.
For a second, I thought it might be Josh.
And then I thought, “Where the heck is the security?”

Josh is unstoppable
If he wanted to, he could rip a hole in time and space and pat Wilt on the back.
I was pretty sure that was him at the press conference asking Kobe a question about tightening the chin strap...

I don't really sense that

he’s also not the type to give a George karl type quote praising Kobe.
If the Lakers win the series, you might hear more praise, because then it will be done.

I'm guessing he saw how Kobe carved up the Nuggets' double teams
And thought he would try to get away with single teaming.
But Kobe is like the IRS, if you try to cheat, he will may you pay.

Wow...he looked like the best in the world tonight
Knocking down tough jump shots…driving to the basket, getting the ball in the paint, earning the and-1…he’s definitely worthy of being better than LeBron James.
C'mon you don't mean that
How can you mean that? I feel bad now. The Cavs will have success.
LBJ is exceptional.

See?
See how pathetic the Magic are when their 3-point shooting is absolute shit?
ARRRRRRGGGHHH we should have won that series. We should be the opponent you guys are playing right now.
Problem is that West and William's wingspans are probably a foot shorter than Ariza/Odom/Gasol's
"This is not a game for boys. This is a game for men." - Phil Jackson
This win is more than Kobe
The rebounding difference, their defense on Dwight Howard, the way they closed out on shooters.. that’s how the Lakers won the game.
I was especially impressed by
how many times they knocked the ball loose from a Magic player, whether it was in the act of shooting or not.
You guys played amazing defense tonight. I’m so jealous.
Absolutely
It’s hard to express degrees in prose though.
To be precise, people would have to use numbers – it was 35% Kobe, 25% Interior Defense, 25% Rebounding, 15% Perimeter defense … or something like that. And 100% effort.

Kobe's on the podium
and man he’s really really pissed off. Straight to the point. Understands that it’s just one game. No big deal.
And he’s still glaring at the media.
The man is obsessed with winning the championship. One media member asked him about Courtney Lee and Kobe immediately shot the media down because they were trying to bait him into saying Courtney Lee was at Kobe’s mercy.
The media should talk about how he's willing his team
And how because he’s turned up the intensity so high, the Lakers got their killer instinct back.
He's all business, not smiling, saying we have not won anythin yet

i would have loved to have seen james vs bryant. however, i wanted the magic because it would give us home-court. if the cavs would have had a worse record then us, then by all means…
You guys would have been the favorites against us
You swept us so convincingly in the regular season. LeBron had some of his worst games against you guys. Granted, we didn’t have D West, but we couldn’t even beat you in the Q without Bynum.
To heck with what ESPN says
They’re the ones who said you guys lacked a killer instinct throughout the playoffs. Well, they’d better talk about your guys’ superior energy, effort, and hustle tonight or they’re not being honest with themselves.

many of you may disagree, but i didn’t like the game plan. i didn’t like the fact kobe took 34 shots. i think he forced a lot of shots. he didn’t involve his teammates as much he should have. they helped get him here, share the wealth. get them involved. don’t try to take the spotlight it’s already on you.
Well the game degenerated once the Lakers got a big cushion
Somewhere near the end of the 3rd.
I just hope the Lakers remember each game starts over, it’s a blank slate, you don’t get to carry over the points, and your opponent isn’t going to lay down, so you have to continue to execute.

Gils_Keloids, relax, sit back, and have fun.
No team has ever beaten a team coached by Phil Jackson after losing game 1 in a series. The first 43 teams failed, and Orlando is definitely ill-equipped to become the first.
I know I place a lot of emphasis on game 1s,
But I really insist this time. The only team to ever come close was the Sacramento Kings, and this Magic team is no 2002 Kings.
Those Kings have got to be pissed.
They were a really solid team, however they just ran into the Lakers at the wrong time.

No, I agree with Gils.
They can’t revert back to the earlier versions just because they have a big lead. Keep playing and keep building the lead. This is the championships. We don’t want to cut their arms and then throw them a bandaid. We want to cut their arms and then use those arms and beat them with it.
That is graphic.
I remember Stu saying one time during a game that Kobe won’t try to revive you, he’ll just pull the plug.

He did share the wealth, he passed out when the opportunity arose. Given, he could have passed out more but when he’s making shots like that why not?
Yeah, this is where when it come down to it , it doesn't matter
But the “coachy” part of me agrees with Phils comment that they went to Kobe too much after he was hot. It’s the principle.
C’mon we have to nitpick something when it goes this well!
"This is not a game for boys. This is a game for men." - Phil Jackson
Ariza could have played better.
I’m sure Kobe won’t shoot as much in Game 2. When we gain “cushion” in the series Kobe looks to distribute the ball more.
Oh, I think Kobe in the 2nd quarter
had Ariza open a few times at the trey but either didn’t spot him or something.
Eh, Ariza didn't force anything
Maybe one three, but I’m glad he didn’t feel like he had to "get his’.
He played good D, got some boards.
He didn’t get frustrated, even though he was open. His opportunities will come.

He’s made good decisions, I don’t mind him much as a bench player. It is just the length of his contract, and how much salary space he eats up that makes me want more out of him. I guess thats unfair to Luke but sometimes I just cannot help it. Give him credit though, he has been solid in the last few games of the Denver series and tonight. Really helped steady the bench and get Pau/Bynum touches when they are in good position to score.
He may have other reasons to not be here
But I’ve noticed guys like “drummer” only like to post when the Lakers are down. He’s a Laker fan, so it’s not trolling, but it’s more like a guy who only points out when things are going wrong, and only has criticism. Maybe it’s a defense mechanism to protect from disappointment?

I think SVG made a mistake during halftime in his “wired” section where he said something about the Cavs being all about Lebron, and all they needed was to stop him. Then he said its the same thing for this series except now, this series is just “all about Kobe”
Just thought that comment was a little odd. This team is a lot more than just Kobe. The offense doesn’t center around Kobe like it does in the Cavaliers system.
He was talking about the media, trying to get his team pissed off and ready to play.

I know but the Boston Celtics were 32-0 when leading 3-2 in a series, they lost to the Magic.
There have been 6 teams, in the conference finals, who have beat the best (record wise) team. All those teams went on to win the championship. The Orlando team is the 7th to beat the best team record wise which would be the Cavs.
At this point it is all about how the Lakers execute both on defense and offense.
I like our chances.
BAH
The Celtics barely had any business playing the Magic, they should have been eliminated in 6, but the Magic collapsed at the end of game 5 for no reason. The Celtics were depleted and exhausted.
Now you guys have a team whose resolve has never been stronger. Coming off two convincing wins over Denver, your team definitely looks poised to keep their streak going. Yes intuitive, I’d say it’s only a matter of time now!!

Speaking of Japanese
It sounded like some kind of Asian techno pop was being played at half time at Staples Center after the first commercial break.
I would not play the likes of “Thriller” and “Jump” when there’s a jump ball. Even Kobe’s said Staples needs a big music upgrade.

My Thoughts on Game 1
Just some bullet points:
- We played Dwight almost perfectly, in fact, I would even drop the number of doubles we threw at him.
- Our rotations on their 3 pt shooters were generally crisp. Only a couple times were the Lakers looked confused (two guys rotating to one shooter, etc)
- Kobe is ruthless
- Jameer provided a quick emotional lift with his solid 2nd quarter play, but we did a good job on him and Rafer in the 2nd half
- The Magic shooting 29.9% is simply unbelieveable. They are much better than this and simply, for lack of a better phrase, shiat the bed tonight.
- Pau’s jumper looked as good as it’s looked all playoffs
- Have to keep the intensity for Game 2

They looked troublesome at first and led by 5 at one point, but then you guys turned up the intensity and went on a 10-0 run, contested shots, forced multiple turnovers and timeouts, ended the half with a 10 point lead and momentum that carried into the 3rd. I really think that second quarter was the difference in this game.
espn seems to want to not say much when the lakers win

players talk very vaguely and generically about other players, like a politician

I forget what Josh looks like
Did he ask a question at the press conference?

Don't know, but he said he might have media access

Yes, he was at the game tonight with a press credential. In the game recap that he’s drafting, I suspect he’ll fill us in on the experience.

That’s not the Mamba. Please. That’s El Diablo. Dude is possessed. The NBA needs an exorcism. Forget Orlando, the rest of league will be at the Lakers mercy for the next 3-4 years. Thanks for the wake up call Leprechauns. 13 down and 3 to go. 15 is for you Chick.

Well, sir, you are a cowardly son of a bitch! You just shot an unarmed man!.......Well, he should have armed himself if he's going to decorate his saloon with my friend. – Will Munny
I looked at NBA,com
They talk about the finals coaches, saying “Distinguished vs Disheveled”. More like Calm vs Cacophonous.
i deleted the fake Twitter comment for you Intuitive
just to make sure the trolls don’t have any more ammo
Don't worry about it
it happens. i know people that make fake twitter accounts in celebrities names just in the hopes of selling it to them later. It’s crazy
Why the Lakers defense deserves a lot more credit than "Just a bad game" for Orlando.
Orlando’s shooting percentage for the game was a terrible 30%, but their shooting percentage from 3 pt range was a respectable 35%. That’s lower than they shot against Cleveland, but still not terrible.
If Orlando had truly just been tight, the 3’s would have shown it more than anything. I know they missed some open ones, but they also made some contested ones. Holding a team to 28% shooting on two point shots? That’s just a spectacular defensive effort.
Over at Hardwood Paroxysm they make some good points
- You’re going to hear the "Die by the three" stuff. Don’t buy into it. That assumes the Magic would have cooled off anyway, and does a disservice to the Lakers defense.
- The Lakers used the paint as a headquarters. They centered there, and used it to spring out on passers, to disrupt passing lanes, to close out on shooters, and it was incredibly effective. Great defensive gameplan by Phil Jackson.

Lakers played a great game now they must do it three more times
And I would like t see more Gasol down low
More Shannon Brown
More Trevor Ariza points
More bench production- Vujacic
And less Kobe Doing Work- He was great, got everyone involved but I would like to see more Lakers be as aggressive as Kobe was
We continue to build on game 1 and all I see is a trophy for the Lakers.Game 2 very important.
