- Phil Jackson mulls coaching Los Angeles Lakers mostly at home - ESPN
Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson said in a radio interview Tuesday that he will make a firm decision about returning to the bench next season by "early July" and that he will also explore the possibility of letting Lakers assistant coach Kurt Rambis coach more road games in Jackson's place. Jackson Jackson In the interview with ESPN Radio in Los Angeles (710 AM), Jackson insisted that health concerns would be the only reason that prevented him from completing the final season of his current coaching contract. He also revealed that the concept of Rambis coaching the team regularly on the road -- theoretically sparing Jackson, who turns 64 in September, from the rigors of travel -- has already been discussed internally. - Lakers' draft day choices - OCRegister.com

Claiming to know the greatest draft pick of all time in each of the top 30 slots is a good way to start an argument. In this case, I leaned toward draft picks who helped create team success. While going through the lists year by year, I was reminded just how difficult it is to find impact players -- even when dealing with a top-three pick. To go through the draft lists over the last six decades is to realize that the likes of Bill Russell and Michael Jordan are rarely discovered. - A look back at Lakers' first-round draft picks - OCRegister.com

People who wear black: Will Smith, certain Bob Dylans, the Devil (probably), bizarro Mark Twain, Darth Vader, Hot Topic staff, Johnny Cash, and, now, Richard Jefferson. In one swift motion, the Spurs have turned three aging vets with expiring deals into a versatile, dynamic swingman that solves their problems on the wing. This is why the trophy case in San Antonio is full, and this is why Tim Duncan goes to sleep every night with a smile on his face. - Bruce Bowen Waves a Classy Goodbye - TrueHoop By Henry Abbott - ESPN
There has been some speculation that longtime Spur Bruce Bowen might be waived by Milwaukee and return to San Antonio, but there are two mild indications that won't happen: * For one thing, Bowen is close to Blazer assistant Monty Williams, who just told Blazers Edge that he does not think Bowen will return to the Spurs. * For another, Bowen just posted a very classy goodbye and thank you to his San Antonio fans on the San Antonio Express-News website: - Source: Deal sends Minnesota Timberwolves' Randy Foye, Mike Miller to Washington Wizards - ESPN
The Washington Wizards are close to a deal that would send the No. 5 pick in Thursday's draft, Oleksiy Pecherov, Etan Thomas and Darius Songaila to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Randy Foye and Mike Miller, a league source told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher on Tuesday. - Pistons Trade Amir Johnson for Fabricio Oberto's Contract -- NBA FanHouse
Just hours after being traded from the Spurs to the Bucks, Fabricio Oberto is reportedly on the move yet again, this time going to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Amir Johnson. - Stephen Curry, Blake Griffin, and Hasheem Thabeet: Inside the Numbers - TrueHoop By Henry Abbott - ESPN
We're inundated with more stuff than ever, yet when it comes to raw data about a player's tendencies, there's still a lot that even most basketball junkies don't know. Synergy Sports is on it. They supply sortable video and data to NBA teams, and have been developing meticulous reports on this year's draft class. They were nice enough to send some samples of their research to TrueHoop. These are multiple-paged spreadsheets with evidence plucked straight from video. Here are some highlights of what the reports deliver: - The Case Against Ricky Rubio, Brought to You by ... ? - Sactown Royalty
Who is trashing Ricky Rubio? - Rubio Shouldn't Get a Free Pass - SportingNews.com - The Baseline
At what point do we start calling Rubio a prima donna, or accuse him of having an attitude? I know that everyone (but Brandon Jennings) who plays in Europe becomes a knight and saint rolled up in one. And fine, maybe Rubio just doesn't want to mess with his formerly sky-high stock. But really, this is ridiculous. It's almost like Rubio and his management are taking it for granted that he's better and more important than his fellow PG prospects. - X’s & O’s of Basketball: Draft Thoughts, Will the Knicks Get Rubio?
In an otherwise uninteresting upcoming NBA draft, the biggest story in my opinion will be whether or not the Knicks (who draft eighth overall) pull out all the strings to get Ricky Rubio who appears to be the perfect fit to quarterback D'Antoni's 7-seconds-or-less offense. The Knicks aside, Rubio is perhaps the most intriguing pick in this year's draft because of his upside but he's also the riskiest pick because of his youth and the financial cost it will take to get him. - Which Prospects Deserve the Hype? -- NBA FanHouse

The NBA is littered with busts at or near the top of the first round. Here is just a sampling of the worst, starting with Bowie. His selection underscores the cardinal rule behind NBA Draftology: You can't draft for need. The Blazers, flush with Jim Paxson and Clyde Drexler on the wings, needed a center and passed on drafting Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and John Stockton. Bowie struggled with injuries throughout his 10-year run and finished with career averages of 10.9 points and 7.5 rebounds. - X’s & O’s of Basketball: Breaking Down the Kansas Ball Screening Fist Offense

If Phil were to decide to only coach home games, does that mean he gets paid half of what he’s expected to be paid?
by intuitive on Jun 23, 2009 8:39 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
No way Phil is going to do this.
Then he can’t take all of the credit for winning back to back (to back) four times. With 4 separate sets of players.

90% of coaching is done before the game even starts
Or so they say.
How about virtual coaching during the game, where he just controls substitutions via twitter or a cell phone! They could just play a monitor in the middle of the huddle at timeouts, and video conference PJ in his PJs.

What about a cardboard Phil cutout to sit on the bench during road games?
Considering the amount Phil moves during games, the players may not catch on for a while.

just say no.
to Kurt Rambis as head coach.
I’m sorry, but didn’t the Lakers try the Kurt Rambis experiment after Del Harris?
Granted, that was nearly 12 to 13 years ago, but I don’t recall that working out well.
And I certainly remember that Portland game where we probably would have had a better chance at winning if Phil had been the coach.
Not to knock on Rambis, because I’m sure he’s a great guy and would be a terrific coach elsewhere, I just don’t think he’d be a good coach for the triangle or for this currently constructed Lakers team.

That's what I always thought.
with Fish becoming an assistant after next year.

I wonder if Fish will be a future Lakers head coach someday
I’d vote for that.

Count me in as well.
I’d vote for Brian Shaw too.
He did a great job scouting Orlando.

I'm not high on him either.
But I guess we’ll have to live with it.
I didn’t care much for the SSZ defense. I thought it made us too vulnerable at times. But I’ll give him the benefit of doubt, because sometimes the players lacked energy, and the defense looked worse. We’ll see.

I may be too critical
I just didn’t like Rambis as the coach then, don’t think I’ll like him as the coach later.
He’s a great assistant coach though and I do like that he’s trying to get the team to execute some form of team defense, but I don’t think he’ll do well as the head honcho coach that can get players to listen to him.
Still, I can see why he’s an “attractive” candidate for the head coach position only because of his ties to the Lakers organization, the buss family and of course being an assistant to phil …
I just think whoever follows Phil will have a difficult time measuring up.

people may disagree, but i think jeff van gundy would do well with this current roster. he’s better than rambis. i vote no for shaw. why? because he has no experience as a head coach.
by chaucer on Jun 24, 2009 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
based on what is available right now, and assuming coach K will not jump to the pros, i think jeff van gundy is the best candidate. he’s experienced.

ive never been a big fan of doug collins the coach (the broadcaster, yes) but i’m curious as to how he’d do with this roster. this team cannot afford to go with a first time head coach or one with little experience, a la nate mcmillan.

He’s so boring. His style is played out. Never.
Avery? No. He controls too much.

Lots and Lots of trade speculation
As the Minnesota Timberwolves prepare to make a push for Memphis’ pick at No. 2, it’s become clear that they won’t package the fifth and sixth picks to get there. The Wolves have made it clear to teams that are trying to pry their 18th pick that it isn’t available. They want to use that in combination with one of the two higher picks to make a deal with Memphis. … The Utah Jazz are enamored with University of Pittsburgh tough guy Sam Young at No. 20, who is a perfect fit for head coach Jerry Sloan. … Golden State has long been enamored with Brandon Jennings at No. 7, but league sources say the Warriors are considering Wake Forest forward James Johnson there as well. Few teams would have Johnson that high on their draft boards. … Chicago Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich(notes) is telling friends that he thinks he’ll be dealt to the Portland Trail Blazers, who have interest in pairing him with Brandon Roy(notes) in the backcourt. … New Jersey Nets ownership finally told Rod Thorn that he doesn’t have to trade Vince Carter(notes) in a salary dump. They thus pulled back on a possible trade with the San Antonio Spurs which would’ve brought them a package including Bruce Bowen(notes), Fabricio Oberto(notes) and Roger Mason(notes) Jr. Nets sources say that if owner Bruce Ratner is going to bail on the Brooklyn arena and sell his team to cut his losses, ownership groups who would potentially purchase the team would rather he doesn’t gut it. … Rival executives say that Cleveland Cavaliers GM Danny Ferry would prefer to do a deal for Carter, which was discussed again recently, but feels pressure to make the monumental move for Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O’Neal(notes). … Oberto, who was traded to the Detroit Pistons in a three-way deal with the Milwaukee Bucks and will be bought out by the Pistons in a salary-cap move, will likely return to San Antonio as a free agent. … There’s no chance Bowen returns to the Spurs if the Bucks buy him out as well. His relationship with Gregg Popovich deteriorated with his dwindling role a year ago, and that partnership is over. … League sources say the Nets have narrowed their choices at No. 11 to North Carolina’s Tyler Hansbrough and Duke’s Gerald Henderson.

and I read this over on Blazers Edge but I guess Kobe was on the Jim Rome Show and they were discussing possible replacements Kobe would like if Phil were to retire. He said either JVG or Nate McMillan (Blazers coach).. Interesting..

what’s up with this rumor about phil coaching only home games, and rambis coaching road games. what do u guys think about that? i’m not so certain anymore about phil coming back. it’s sounding like he may seriously retire. i was very confident he’d be back. not so sure anymore. if he does leave, who should replace him? are u guys comfy with rambis?

The one thing I’m concerned about is that if Phil retires, do they keep the same system or do they scrap it and just go with whatever the new coach wants to install. That’s why I’ve always been in favor of promoting in house with the same system.
by hertagnism on Jun 24, 2009 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
However Kobe feels.
I think they would remain in house to keep remnants of the triangle, but alos allow it to be opened up more.
by wondahbap on Jun 24, 2009 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I really think PJ is coming back
And I don’t see why we even draft have to many players on this team maybe draft and trade for future picks. Most if the players after 15 are D-league caliber!
