I'll have plenty to say over the next few days. We're really going to savor and cherish this. But for now, this is your space to soak it up... the Lakers are NBA Champions, folks! Kobe got his ring without Shaq. Phil surpassed Red. The Lakers got #15. And Kobe is Finals MVP.

The best thing about LA winning is

Boston gets screwed some more because Phil has passed Red, Kobe has number 4, we dethroned them, and we’re now just 2 titles behind them.

I have no doubt that we’ll rectify that soon enough.

LA Lakers are the 2009 NBA Champions.

It's because LeBron needs space at the basket

Getting to the hoop is what he’s good at. If you take that away, he becomes just okay. Meanwhile, the first law of physics on planet Shaq is that Shaq clogs the lane. When he has been the focus, that has worked well for him in the past, on both ends of the floor. But the Cavs don’t want to take away their own best players primary forte.

Congratulations, you guys. You looked like the better team throughout the entire series, and this has to be a moment of, above all else, redemption. Redemption from the two finals defeats. Redemption from the three painful years between the Shaq-Fox-Shaw era and the Gasol-Bynum-Odom era. Redemption from all the heat and responsibility Kobe has had to shoulder for the last five years.

Enjoy the summer. I’ll see you next year.

How Sweet It Is, Lakers 2009 NBA Champions

The NBA Finals I’ve cherished. Phil Jackson getting his 10th NBA title. Kobe Bryant’s 4th title. From the opening playoffs to the final buzzer I was glued to all the actions and watched history unfold before my eyes. The Lakers are a great team, thanks to Phil, Kobe, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom and the rest. It was an amazing journey after the heartbreaking loss to the Celtics last year. It is sweet indeed. To have the savor the moment as a Laker fan. Congratulations to Phil Jackson as the winningest coach and Kobe Braynt as heir to Michael Jordan as one of the greatest basketball player. Honestly, I know I’ll get jumped on for saying this, but Kwame is better as a 5th big man than Mbenga. They both suck at catching the ball, but Kwame was a better individual post defender. Congrats Laker lovers from a blazers fan! That team definitely deserved to win it all. They looked pretty freaking great in the fiinals.

From an outsiders perspective regarding Odom vs Ariza, I know I didn’t watch as much Laker games as you guys obviously, but to me Ariza seemed to have the bigger impact when it mattered in games. He made the big defensive plays that you need in big games. He is also considerable younger. I think if you had to choose between the two, the smart bet would be on Ariza.

by chaucer on Jun 14, 2009 9:18 PM PDT up reply actions

we can afford it

Buss pulls down a bigger net profit on a yearly basis than any other franchise. With the ridiculous amount he charges for seats so average fans cant get close to the court, he owes it to the fans to bring the team back . I think he will.

by Snoopy2006 on Jun 14, 2009 9:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not so sure you can afford both.

You have 74 million committed to 8 players next season, not including Odom or Ariza. Ariza is going to be worth 6-8 million a year probably, especially now that he has a ring, and There will be plenty of teams that want Odom as well for 10 milion. Because you are in the luxury tax, that would mean unless one of them takes a significant paycut, your salary would be around 100 million for only 10 players. In this economy I’m not sure that’s a good business decision.

by dario argento on Jun 14, 2009 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions

-Don’t forget Luke Walton. He came on in 2004, just after our 3-peat. Remember him jumping into our consciousness with the 8 assists for a flailing Lakers team in the 04 Finals. He’s been here since the lows started, and now he finally gets to taste one.

Thanks for the kind words

and I, for one, would love to see the rematch of last year’s finals. When the Lakers and Celtics are good, it’s good for the league.

Thanks Steve!

A rematch would be incredible, and extremely likely with both teams healthy.

What else is a Blazers fan to say, right?

Good Tweet From Kevin Love

“I hope they make Adam Morrison dance Ala mark Madsen at the parade/celebration…anyone feel me on that?”

by DexterFishmore on Jun 14, 2009 9:45 PM PDT reply actions

That would be awesome!

But at least Madsen played. Mbenga maybe?

by illcowboy on Jun 14, 2009 9:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Did Morrison look happy at any point tonight?

I saw him on the dais afterwards and he was completely stoic. Secretly gearing up for a 2nd run? Or pissed that JJ Reddick got to play in the Finals and he didn’t?

by Snoopy2006 on Jun 14, 2009 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions

He was smiling and celebrated alittle

by intuitive on Jun 14, 2009 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

this may sound ludicrous…but may adam morrison be the x factor in odom and ariza’s future with the lakers? think about it…he may take odom’s spot.

A Laker Benchwarmer Savors a Personal Victory
Laker forward Josh Powell played just 73 minutes during these playoffs, but he more than earned the sense of victory and relief that comes with his first championship ring. Needing money to support his family, Powell left North Carolina State in 2003. Long, skilled, athletic and tough he was so impressive at some of his workouts that he was briefly discussed as a lottery pick — although he ultimately went undrafted, and has played for several team overseas in the NBA in the interim.

One of his workouts was for the Washington Wizards, where Patrick Ewing was then an assistant coach.

After the workout, Ewing stunned Powell, by telling him that he would never make the NBA.

Powell has not forgotten. “Every time I see him,” he says, he remembers the words that once cut him. “It was just motivation. I can’t do nothing but respect it, if that’s his opinion. It just drove me to go hard. It drove me to stay hungry.”

About then, some NBA personnel came through the champagne-soaked Laker locker room with the gleaming NBA championship trophy. Powell finishes his thought, reaching for the trophy: “Everything worked out for the best … now let me see that thing right there …”

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-41-86/Nine-Things-to-Remember-About-the-2009-NBA-Finals.html

There were so many guys that were told they would never make it on this team.
So many told Kobe he would never win one without Shaq.
Ariza was called delusional and traded around because he didn’t fit into the system the Magic sought.
Pau was called soft.
Critics said Lamar would crumble under the biggest stage.
and now Powell was told he would never make it to the Nba.
I’m sure there are so many more stories.

Thats a big fuck you to all the doubters.

by intuitive on Jun 14, 2009 11:07 PM PDT reply actions

Well while all the doubter can remain quiet and say "I was wrong"

all the Laker/Kobe haters out there are even more pissed now.

i’m still trying to find that quote from that asshole who claimed on espn, when the lakers were playing the nuggets, that he cannot see odom and gasol winning a championship. that their countenance was one that suggested they cannot be champions.

Emotional Release

So, I got real choked up during the last couple minutes of the game. I held it together until the final seconds and then lost it. Not bawling, just a little happy sobbing. I think it was more of a emotional release more than anything. I’m actually a little ashamed, my friends were laughing, and only one of my other friends was emotional. It’s just a frickin’ game. But what a great frickin’ game it is!

Don't tell me...

…you folks got taken in by T.J. Simers’s schtick, too?! Come on, this guy’s columns are never to be taken (too) seriously, and he knows it better than anybody.

by BrianTung on Jun 15, 2009 1:48 AM PDT up reply actions

If a blogger did what TJ Simers does...

…it would be called hit-seeking, traffic-baiting, etc. (not a good thing). He’s just writing asinine, controversial things because it generates traffic. Why do you think he’s still around? If his columns were judged on quality, he’d have been canned by the LAT ages ago. But that’s not what he’s being judged on, because that’s not what his bosses ask him to provide. He provides traffic, which is what the LAT needs, and he does it by inciting controversy. It’s pathetic.

tj simers
But winning it all makes them no more appealing, Kobe still over the top absurd in his mood swings, Pau still carrying on like someone swiped his rattle, Phil so above it all it’s surprising he doesn’t demand to be carried off the court like Cleopatra.

I was one of the lucky few to be invited to watch Game 5 vs. Denver at Metta World Peace's Private Party. He was very intense watching the game, and it was obvious that it bothered him a lot that he couldn't be there helping his teammates.

This is a video I took of Ron's reaction to Kobe's last shot at the buzzer to tie. Him raising his hands was the happiest I saw him during the whole game. I was hoping to record a great celebration.
