LIVE - Lakers vs. Rockets: Game 1 - 4th Quarter

3-point game to start the fourth. I like it, because though a lead would be great, we shouldn't be seeing any 4th quarter dropoff in effort.

Kobe has turned it on in the 3rd? Can he keep it going? I'd like to see him start hitting teammates as the Rockets adjust to his hot 3rd quarter hand.

Let's do this! One solid quarter!

As has been mentioned, the Lakers played D in the first half while their shot wasn’t falling. Then in the 3rd quarter, the shots started falling and they let up on D.

In the 4th, they’re scoring AND playing great D.

Because the Rockets have 3 games at home... And they play with the proverbial "house money" in game 2...

My expectation has moved from Lakers in 6 to Lakers in 7 after tonight…

Here come the "you gotta respect the Rockets" calls

The Lakers always respected them.

And like Josh said, not time to overreact. Just one game. The Lakers can win in Houston.

Here we go with all this

prisoner of the moment stuff. The Lakers are the better team — there’s no denying it. They had a week off and were clearly very rusty, but don’t think that just because the Rockets took ONE game means that the series is going seven games. Game 2 will be a much different story, and the Lakers aren’t intimidated playing in Houston. Lakers will be fine.

by BruinFanBaby on May 4, 2009 10:42 PM PDT up reply actions

The Lakers have better players, but Houston might be a better TEAM.

They do have huge mismatches at Center and PG — as we saw tonight.

Fisher had no chance whatsoever with Brooks. Yao was high for the Rockets with 28 pts. and Pau never got offensive traction…

The rockets won in LA.

Well, I'll see you guys for game 2

And next time, I’ll be 100% behind the Lakers, because I want this series to be even heading to Houston.

It’s going to be fun watching LA dig themselves out of this sticky mess.

Well, guys, great game. Thanks for having me around – this is a great blog. I’ll try to make it to the other games, but good luck just in case.

Later.

there are no excuses

we should be able to bend a week off to our advantage.
i hope phil knows how to prep everybody for the next game
Kobe finally started being himself and driving to the whole when in desparation.
WHY DIDNT KOBE DO THAT EARLY ON?!?!

Jesus, man!

Kobe needs to drive, and same with Lamar. Bynum and Pau need to man the FACK up and play some good solid defense, and take their defenders to the rack.

by SoCalBuff12 on May 4, 2009 10:26 PM PDT reply actions

Kobe cant do everything.

by intuitive on May 4, 2009 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Luis Scola 53% shooter this year 4-9 today
Pau Gasol 57% shooter this year 6-14 today

I will allow that some of that is due to defense (and you agree they both had open looks), but Gasol’s shooting was more of an aberration than Scola’s shooting.

by Gils_Keloids on May 4, 2009 11:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly.

Other guys need to step up. This isn’t a one man team.

by BruinFanBaby on May 4, 2009 10:44 PM PDT up reply actions

That is completely right...

Phil needs to get Pau the hell away from Yao on the defensive end. Bring in Mbenga and let him Mbanga…

by timbo on May 4, 2009 10:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Mbenga will pick up 6 fouls so fast he’ll enter the game and leave soon after.

by intuitive on May 4, 2009 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Basically no one came to play tonight and no one could hit a shot.

by intuitive on May 4, 2009 10:26 PM PDT reply actions

The one thing that bugged me

is that we finally get back to a 1-point lead and then all of a sudden it is back to being down by 6 points.

Kobe needs to drive to the basket more Wednesday.

Kobe got no touches during that 7-0 run by the Rockets.

by intuitive on May 4, 2009 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Why wasn’t Bynum in instead of Pau?

Ariza went 0-4 from the 3 point line
The whole team went 2-18 from 3
Everyone settled for jumpshots
Odom didn’t but went 1-6 from the FT line
Houston shot 29 FT’s to our 19
Pau was soft and went 6-14
Both Pau and Bynum didn’t front Yao
Yao got 17 shots and made 9

Add those all up and we get a loss.

by intuitive on May 4, 2009 10:30 PM PDT reply actions

And you can't settle for

jumpshots when you are rusty. You have to get some easy buckets early, which also leads to getting to the free throw line.

Props to everyone on this blog

Very classy comments, I love how yall handled the Yao situation, and FYI yall bitched alot less than the Portland fans did after we beat them in game 1. Very good blog you have here. Looking forward to game 2, I still think LA is the favorite to win… but at least this should be a hell of a series.

i think its a little different now.

by TexasHoosier on May 4, 2009 10:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah but I think a 7 point win over this LA team

is the equivalent of 27 over Portland. Either way a win is a win, there were questionable calls in both games, and REALLY respect how these guys reacted when Yao went down. Not one person voiced a cheer or even a “Yao is a wimp” comment. Thats rare.

Wouldn't dream of it.

I got up a few minutes after the injury, and I bumped my knee against the table. I had to sit down and rub it for a minute before I could get up again. The knee is a very painful place to get hit in!

Thanks!

Enjoy the victory………..WHILE YOU STILL CAN. Ah ha ha ha ha ha! Oh ho ho ho ho……..man, that sounds pretty lame when your team loses.

Farmar played good defense on Brooks why did he get yanked so soon?

by intuitive on May 4, 2009 10:33 PM PDT reply actions

I have no clue.

This seems like the perfect matchup for Jordan since he has the speed to hang with Brooks.

by BruinFanBaby on May 4, 2009 10:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I know and the little floor time he did get he played well on him. Phils substitutions boggle my mind sometimes

by intuitive on May 4, 2009 10:39 PM PDT up reply actions

The Lakers

were so rusty coming out of the locker room, and they were were never able to fully recover. Kobe played very well considering he had flu-like symptoms, but it’s on the rest of the team to step up. Pau didn’t have a great game by any stretch of the imagination, so I really wonder why Drew wasn’t put into the game late. The Lakers didn’t do enough to win this game. Credit definitely must be given to the Rockets, especially Brooks, whose speed is just ridiculous, and Yao. I really respect Yao, and what he did tonight was very impressive.

I’m looking forward to Game 2, where I expect the Lakers to come out with a very different attitude. I think Kobe needs to jump start the team in the first quarter. Not necessarily like he did in Game 4, but enough to give the guys some confidence. Also, I hope Drew gets more touches, especially in the low post, where he is most effective. Go Lakers.

I was one of the lucky few to be invited to watch Game 5 vs. Denver at Metta World Peace's Private Party. He was very intense watching the game, and it was obvious that it bothered him a lot that he couldn't be there helping his teammates.

This is a video I took of Ron's reaction to Kobe's last shot at the buzzer to tie. Him raising his hands was the happiest I saw him during the whole game. I was hoping to record a great celebration.
