Lakers 119, Nuggets 92: Game 6 Post-Game Thread

This is what I'm about to fill my entire stomach with (and when that's full, my hollow leg) – in honor of the Nuggets.

This is what I'm about to fill my entire stomach with (and when that's full, my hollow leg) – in honor of the Nuggets.

I'm looking for any negatives here, and I'm just not finding them. (I'm sure Brittney will help us out with that one!) There's a LOT to be said about this game, and we'll be talking about it, about the entire series, and then about the upcoming Finals soon enough.

Tonight, I'm going to leave this to you guys. Tell us what you liked the most about the game. Scour the box scores, highlight your favorite numbers. Use the "Rec" feature, and maybe we'll pull together the favorite comments in a future post.

But don't stick around too long – we're back to the Finals, this team has been tested, and they have risen to the challenge... I expect y'all to be gettin' your drink on, like I will be!

No drunk posting...

Thanks. Nuggets were a terrific team this year. Too bad about what the Blazers did to them in 2009-10 though, my condolences for that...

Ariza over Turkoglu

Before this series I would of preferred to play the Cavs. But after seeing that Ariza could stay infront of Melo and do a decent job I think that he can defenitely guard a much slower Turkoglu. I would much rather play the Magic.

He is only good for one great offensive outburst. Even though JR had a great game tonight Billups didn’t.

I'm not surprised Chauncey didn't show up.

This is becoming a habit.

It’s why Detroit wasn’t the same. He and Rasheed can’t close anymore.

Who's next?

by wondahbap on May 29, 2009 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes and teams have learned how to play him on D

Just put a faster guard on him. But the decline of his speed has made it so that he no longer requires to be double teamed when he posts up other PG’s.

by PURPLE AND GOLD FOR LIFE on May 29, 2009 9:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I think of Turkoglu as Nowitzki if he was a 3/4

Who would be best guarding that?

And as stated in the fourth quarter thread, I don’t think it’s automatic you will have a smooth ride. Pietrus, Lee, Lewis are all guys who can credibly rotate guarding Kobe. And if a team collapses on Howard, he has improved a lot finding the open shooter outside.

by Norsktroll on May 29, 2009 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Pietrus and Lee are playing WELL.

I think Lamar and Ariza can check Rashard.

Who's next?

by wondahbap on May 29, 2009 9:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I would not put Ariza on Rashard

Rashard can post up and Turkoglu doesn’t and Ariza could never block Rashard and Odom could. But Pietrus is dangerous.

Well, this was an entertaining series to say the least. We saw the Lakers play well and not so well. I think they definatly have learned a lot through the first three rounds of the playoffs and will carry that into the Finals.

I am so freakin happy to see them come together for a SOLID 48-minute game on the road to close out this series.

Lakers really did a great job of responding to runs...

The nuggets came from down 20 to within 9 during the third, but were down 14 at the break because the Lakers closed the quarter well and regained some momentum.

Winning in six games still means the other team is very good.

Sometimes people think it’s disrespectful, but as you can feel right now, winning in six games is not a cakewalk.

Only in hindsight does victory seem inevitable or assured.

And for all the Phil second-guessers

He has his team peaking at just the right time.

The man knows how to balance discipline with support.

If he goes and rips the Lakers for their effort earlier, he might lose their ear later on. If he doesn’t get up in Lamar’s ear in the Denver series, they might not pick up the energy.

by intuitive on May 29, 2009 9:24 PM PDT reply actions

If I were the Lakers

I’d be rooting for Cleveland. Cleveland cannot matchup with anyone inside, and Odom/Gasol killed the Cavs this season. Bryant played okay, but neither Z nor Varejao can do much against Pau or Lamar (and I can’t remember if Bynum played them). And LeBron really struggled to get to the rim.

Plus look at the coaches. Would you rather face Stan, or Mike Brown? Not to say that Phil is the better coach, but Orlando will definitely make LA sweat for it every game, and adjust very well on the fly. Plus that three ball is really dangerous.

orl is the better match-up

Im going to do a full write up later her’s a taste.

1.pg adv even- 1st time in playoffs lakers get an even if not adv in this catorgory

2.Who is rashard lewis going to defend Pau or Bynum- He is amazing against cle cause he doesnt have to plat defense! Pau will put him in foul trouble which tales him out of the game, thus making him useless.

3.Home court adv.

4. Kobe kills Pietrus/C.lee and those are the only guys who can play him

5.Trevor Ariza vs Turkoglu adv even. Yes its even! why? because Turk plays no defense, he doesnt have a low post game to take adv of his hieght and Ariza can stay in fron od him on the perimeter.

6. Lamar Odom playing defense on Turk or R.lewis

What a Complete and Utter Waste of Tottally Lopsided Hometown REfereeing

My God, it was like the Refs kept on handing it to the Nuggets, and they just wouldn’t take it. The refs kind of even gave up in the 2nd half, but that was some absolutely terrible lopsided refereeing completely wasted by the Nuggets.

Please notice. You can still win if the REFS HATE you!!! You play like we did tonight, YOU DO NOT LOOSE. It doesn’t matter what anyone else does.

Free throw disparity in the 3rd

What was it, 9 to 22 at one point? Yeah, it evened out eventually, but I don’t think it was because of the usual reasons. I think it was because the Nuggets started playing reckless, balls to the wall, desperation ball… which tends to mean free throws for the other team. But before that all started, when both teams were actually trying to play their game, the Nuggets had a huge FTA advantage. It was absurd.

But at that point the Lakers were content to shoot jumpers and 3-balls

And their points in the paint were uncontested layups and dunks because of the ridiculously stupid decision to double-team the hot-dog vendor (as GK so eloquently put it).
Remember, free throw disparity does NOT equal partiality by the refs.

Again, this game was called to the benefit of the Lakers (by allowing both teams to bang) but was not called inconsistently.

Ariza finished with 17 points on just nine shots. Three 3-pointers might not seem like much. But those are nine points in what was then a seven-point game — with the Finals on the line. Those are nine big points the Lakers never would have had without the long-term expression of uncommon confidence in a player’s ability to expand his game.

i hope the magic wrap up their series tomorrow, otherwise they’ll lose in cleveland. lakers vs magic will still be a hell of a series and should give good ratings. howard is a beast. lakers don’t have anyone who can guard him.

What I liked after the game was

that none of the Lakers were too ecstatic about winning the Western conference. Last year they were giddy, but this year they know that business isn’t finished. They’re playing their best Playoff basketball at the right time. The team is finding their top gear, with a tough Orlando or Cleveland team coming to present the biggest challenge yet. What an exciting time to be a Lakers fan.

It was a good day...

Birdman was reduced to birdseed, JR was shot, Melo’s going back to cornrows, Mr. Big was Mr. Missing-in-Action, and Sasha was only a -1.
