Lakers-Nuggets Game 5: Post-Game Thread

Finally we see Lamar Odom step up in a big playoff game.  Not sure if it was becuase they were showing a video on his struggles or not, but whatever his motivation he needs to remember and channel that for the rest of the playoffs.  In the pre-game poll I asked how many points Kobe would score becuase the less he scores, the better the Lakers do for obvious reasons.  Tonight, he had what might be a playoff low 22 points on only 13 shots.  There was no lack of scoring though as 5 different Lakers finished in double digits and Bynum came close with 9 points.  I feel bad the he barely saw any 2nd-half PT, but so long as it's because of Odom's stellar play and not foul trouble, I'll get over it.

The game was close throughout, but once again the 4th quarter belonged to the Lakers used an 11-0 run at the start of the fourth to take command and the lead which they never relinquished.  And if the Nuggets thought that if was only Kobe's scoring at the end of the game that could beat them then they were sorely mistaken as he made brilliant pass after brilliant pass as the Lakers pulled away.

Although the winner of Game 5 in a tied series goes on to win the series 83% of the time, I would like to see the Lakers finish this in 6.  This will show that they can win coming off of a victory (yes it's been that long), plus the Magic look like they're about ready to close out the Cavs.

Here's the box score and recap.

Great Win and

Go Purple & Gold!

I liked Pau’s monster screen on Jones when Kobe was bringing the ball up. Happened somewhere early in the game.

i liked...

that it was pretty tasteful and Pau-esque, but still got the job done. If that was K-mart, Jones would have really gone flying.

I thought they reffed it differently in Game 4

The Nuggets would throw their bodies in to the Lakers bigs, and get the call.

Tonight was the opposite, they allowed the Lakers bigs verticality, so that they were not rewarded for just chucking their bodies into the guys in the paint to make contact (which I think is correct).

But I can see how the Nuggets were confused.

And Kobe did not get any calls when it was highly likely he was hacked while driving.

by Gils_Keloids on May 27, 2009 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

But that went both ways

Melo and Kobe were both driving hard, expecting calls and getting nothing.

by C.A. Clark on May 27, 2009 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I felt that calls Kobe should have got were of the reaching variety, and the calls Melo and co. wanted were of the “body” variety.

The only way I thought the game was called favorably for the Lakers were the fouls against Nene

His 5th and 6th were both suspect at best.

Although I will say, if you have 5 fouls, trying to draw a charge is just a foolish play. That’s easily a no call if he’s not trying to flop it up.

by C.A. Clark on May 27, 2009 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

He flopped...

how can you take his side? =P. I don’t think the refs would have called anything had he not tried to flop. I didn’t see his 5th and they didn’t replay it.

by Justin N. on May 27, 2009 9:33 PM PDT up reply actions

oh okay you confused me...

I’m also glad they stopped with the bailout calls in fourth. Sometimes I feel Melo and Chauncey get a lot of them and I’m not gonna lie Kobe too.

Well, remember the Raja clothesline?

Most players would have gotten up and gone after Bell. Kobe didn’t. Got up, smiled, shook his head, dusted off his shoulders, went to the line, took it to him on the court.

This isn’t new for Kobe. He’s very tough, very poised.

Maybe

but he was going for the ball and did get it. Unfortunately Kobe was swinging his arms up for the shot and propelled Melo’s arms into his face. Hard foul, yes. Unnecessary, I don’t think so.

It reminds me of Artest’s foul on Pau. I think that had they called a flagrant, the league would have rescinded anyways. I’m totally ok with the call.

where kobe was pretty shakened, melo then checked on him he was ok..hardfoul yes, not flagrant.

Bryant, Odom and Gasol teamed for all but seven of the Lakers’ points in the fourth. They opened on an 11-0 run for their first lead of the second half and it was capped by Shannon Brown’s(notes) jumper that beat the shot clock.

The Nuggets used a 13-6 run to close to 93-89. Linas Kleiza(notes) scored seven straight and Anthony had six in the spurt.

But then the Lakers regained control and finished off the victory. They improved to 20-0 in Game 5s at home when a series is tied 2-2.

We can still hope

But here I’ll consult whowins.com for historical probabilities of teams up 3-2 playing Game 6 away, looks about 60% of the time teams in that situation have won.

With these Lakers, it’s probably more like 50%

KOBE'S GAME TONIGHT

was just fabulous. he is the best decoy in the nba. he can be a great facilitator, as he proved tonight. we needed lamar and derek to step up and they were big for us tonight. gasol was much more dominant, thanks to his defense. he simply was much more active and aggressive tonight. the way the lakers played the 4th quarter reminded me why they finished the season with the best record in their conference. props to shannon brown for stifling billups. he seemed to be the one who ignited the lakers, the crowd, and our defense.

by chaucer on May 27, 2009 10:16 PM PDT reply actions

i will add..

that kobe bryant was a true leader tonight. this is what i’ve been asking of him. he took a much more vocal role on the court tonight (including the sideline). he was on all of his guys, encouraging them all and pushing them all to play hard, to play to win.

by chaucer on May 27, 2009 10:18 PM PDT reply actions

Phil Jackson deserves all kinds of credit for a career of experimenting. Think about Shannon Brown. Since entering the league in 2006, he has started just nine games, and played a total of about 900 minutes. He couldn’t get off Mike Brown’s bench in Cleveland. Ditto Scott Skiles’ in Chicago, and Larry Brown’s in Charlotte. But in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals, Brown plays 14 big minutes of the second half, and delivers a huge dunk and lots of useful energy. During Brown’s time on the floor, the Lakers outscored the Nuggets by 13.

by intuitive on May 27, 2009 10:23 PM PDT reply actions

Nice.

Well the Lakers pull off another trade that has big dividends. I had no idea who Shannon Brown was before we got him. Boy had he stepped up big because at the time of the trade I thought Morrison would be getting more playing time, not the other way around.

I have seen nothing but good things when I see him on the court. This guy is a player.

Good points about Kobe’s game at FB&G

When Denver went up 7 in the third, I expected (and wanted) Kobe to take over. But he just calmly made the right play, play after play, chipping away and putting immense pressure on Denver to defend our length inside while overdefending Kobe. And what an advantage length is – we controlled the paint at both ends with it in the fourth quarter.

Kobe continues to prove that he is the preeminent closer in the game. Every time down he knew the double was coming, but brilliantly let the full trap come as far out as possible – all to give the other 4 as long as possible to beat 3. A lesser player would have skipped the ball out as soon as the double started. But he is a Man, directing and inspiring his teammates as a true leader – telling Pau and Odom to make plays and putting them in a position to do so. He is everything Henry (Abbott) thinks that he is not.

He can be kind of a douche’. I always liked him, but every answer has this “you people are all beneath me” attitude to them. I also love how he whined about the officiating for like 5 minutes without really whining. Lots of subtle references like “well I will have no trouble motivating my players now”, etc….

Funny, after Game 4 you were pointing the finger at coaches and players for complaining, and the rest of us for doing the same. Now, you feel you have license to complain. Convenient.

Seems it's not just the Nugget players losing their composure.

JVG said the game was well-officiated and he burys the Lakers any chance he gets.

so...

not only is this Nugget a chickensh*t, but he furthers the impression that the entire roster is mostly filled with whiners, crybabies, wannabe-thugs, and trash talking b*tches.

I personally hope the NBA fines the entire franchise $100k for that incendiary comment, implying that the league is fixed. Maybe then the Nuggets might finally clean house, getting rid of the trash (Melo, Smith, Andersen, Martin, Nene, etc.)
