LIVE - Lakers @ Rockets: Game 6 - 4th Quarter

Photo

Victory is within reach.  There need not be a Game Seven.

The Triangle is working, the ball is getting to the rim, and for six or seven minutes the Rockets' turnover disease came out of remission.  The attack stalled a bit in the last couple of minutes, but the Lakers' push was enough to take a seven-point bite out of the lead.

The interior D needs to get more stout, and Phil needs to optimize the lineup for the last 12 minutes, but hope is in the air.

One more strong run, and it's on to the conference finals.  Keep on rocking, commenters. This is the fourth-quarter thread.

And

the most important thing was the Lakers didn’t play any tough defense.

cold, slow start by Lakers

a lot early from Scola, and then plenty later from Landry

In the first 6 minutes Scola couldn’t miss and we couldnt make anything. The score was 1-18.. We were down by 16 points at the end of the first half.. We cut the lead to 2 and then we crumbled from there with Phil’s horrible substitutions like leaving Fisher in for so long. Fisher shades off Brooks and he makes a 3 to get the lead back to 9….. (THEN he finally inserts Farmar when its too late _ go figure) The rest is history.

I don’t understand why Phil is so stubborn with Fisher. Pop’s the same – they love to play the veterans, against all logic.

Even when the younger guys have more to offer or are having a better game.. Farmar was on fire the first half (he got the score to at least a respectable margin) and what does Phil do to start the 2nd half he puts in Fisher.

by kumquatsrus on May 14, 2009 9:27 PM PDT reply actions

Pau’s been looking to pass the ball too much instead of looking to SCORE . He’s way too passive this game

by intuitive on May 14, 2009 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Gasol hasn’t given us much this game at all. All he’s done is take up space on the court, I mean he’s 7-15 for 14 points while the guy defending him is 6’6 NO reason for that.

by intuitive on May 14, 2009 9:27 PM PDT reply actions

Give Chuck Hayes some credit

He plays great post defense.

Both of them. I’m aware he does play good defense but Pau has so much length and this game he didn’t utilize it in order to gain an advantage. He came out soft and didn’t hustle at all. Also he didn’t look to shoot the ball… .He was just passive all night instead of coming out aggressive

he’s right. that’s why i said they don’t deserve to win game 7, because they had no business being in it in the first place. and this is what you said days ago as well timbo.

This is sad

Media will be attacking our defense and rightfully so but Gasol if he blocks shots if he was a feared center, our defense would be better and now everyone is picking Denver and trashing the Lakers.

by BrittneyM on May 14, 2009 9:32 PM PDT reply actions

picking denver for what? are you guys assuming the lakers are going to beat the rockets in game 7? don’t assume anything. the rockets could, and probably will win.

by chaucer on May 14, 2009 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions

bynum has been asleep all playoffs. games like this is when we need him. when others struggle; have your 3rd, 4th option step up. he’s like a little girl out there, scared, lost and confused.

by chaucer on May 14, 2009 9:32 PM PDT reply actions

Some forget he really is only 21. I think thats why mentally he is pretty weak. He hasn’t really developed the “mental toughness” aspect yet. He has said a lot of his issues aren’t because of his knee its more mental

by intuitive on May 14, 2009 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions

No excuse for Gasol not making his presence felt… Especially with such smaller guys on him. He didn’t take advantage of his height tonight. He showed no hustle and no heart .. He looked like he was sleeping out there. Never woke up .

He’s that young? I’d forgotten. It’s way too early to give up on him.

by LatinD on May 14, 2009 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Its easy to forget.. That’s why I give him some leniency for being so mentally out of it. I wish he could start focusing on the game.

A lot of the Laker players have said that they have to choose the right words when talking to him about improving on the court because he is so young. They said with him he’s very sensitive to too much criticism. He’s more of a guy that needs to work his way back to shape…

I sure hope he does get back his mental aspect of the game soon.

Regardless it should be Pau that should shoulder more of the criticism than Bynum. After all, he hasn’t missed many games so he has no excuse for why he’s no where to be found some games….

by intuitive on May 14, 2009 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

If this series is so difficult for him, though, how effective can he be in the WCF? Or the Finals?

Thats why we need Pau to show up every game.. Sadly we aren’t getting that from him. It’s going to be interesting to see if Bynum can regain the mental edge before the playoffs are over.

I’m not expecting for him to gain his mental edge though. If he does I’ll be pleasantly surprised but I just don’t see it happening

Media doesn't see

Bynum missing from being effective, NOONE is afraid of Gasol, Vujacic can’t hit a shot to save his life, Lamar missing so to sum it up game 7 we go and I’m even dissappointed this Houston team should not make the Lakers work like this, this is nuts, I’m done.

It was too much ground to cover.

Now, do you see, it’s not effort, it’s execution.

By the way, the Rockets are good at home.

Fish Is A Major

Chokejob. And If you are going to cheap shot some one, back it up with game, don’t get outplayed by Aaron Brooks.

by stuartallen83 on May 14, 2009 9:39 PM PDT reply actions

all of that matters, but pg position is key, thats why the brooks/ fisher matchup, or mismatch rather, has been so crucial this series. if farmar started in all the games, we would get mountains more offensive and defensive production against brooks and houston. thats why it doesnt make sense when the lakers have to play a gm7 = b/c of ridiculous lack of adjusting for what is obviously a massive mismatch-disadvantage at the pg position.

by kumquatsrus on May 14, 2009 9:39 PM PDT reply actions

and this is who’s fault, of course???? i’m telling you guys, phil doesn’t cut it anymore…

by chaucer on May 14, 2009 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions

scola and landry are going to get their points but can be contained with more effort, but when brooks is speedy gonzales distributing without fear, then where does the blame lie?

by kumquatsrus on May 14, 2009 9:41 PM PDT reply actions

still, on the coach. he’s responsible for recognizing all match ups and making adjustments.

by chaucer on May 14, 2009 9:42 PM PDT up reply actions

i’d counter with both farmar and brown on the court at the same time, trapping his little ass and force him to pass. they have no other playmakers.

by chaucer on May 14, 2009 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions

exactly, thats what ive been saying, but fisher took a half dozen horrible shots to allow houston to expand their lead. seriously, run the offense, dont just jack up 3s.

game7 = come out with aggression, put ball in paint and make gasol get hayes in foul trouble, start farmar against brooks – that’s it, thats the key to winning the game.

by kumquatsrus on May 14, 2009 9:43 PM PDT reply actions

by trapping him at half court, you get the ball out of his hands before he penetrates.

by chaucer on May 14, 2009 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions

unless fisher plans on making 100% from behind the arc by practicing his shot couple thousand times the next 2 days

by kumquatsrus on May 14, 2009 9:45 PM PDT reply actions

farmar needs to force himself to make 2 thousand jump shots a day this off-season. seriously, if he really wants to be the lakers’ pg, then he needs that shot.

by chaucer on May 14, 2009 9:46 PM PDT reply actions

bynum is 21? so what? howard is 22, and look at him dominate games.

by chaucer on May 14, 2009 9:48 PM PDT reply actions

Dwight is 24. Thats a huge difference. 3 years is a lot.

by intuitive on May 14, 2009 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions

let’s not make excuses for bynum. he was effective this season when he played. 21, okay, but this isn’t his first or second season. this is his fourth. it’s about time he starts handling his business like a man.

by chaucer on May 14, 2009 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions

But you know that it took him a long while to get comfortable and get into the flow even in the regular season. You can’t expect him to come back firing on all cylinders when hes missed so much time. It is what it is.

You never really know whats going through Bynum’s head. One game he’ll show you something that makes you believe he’s on the right track. Then the next game he’ll fade away and he’ll look out of sorts on the court. Who knows

exactly, bynum can make up excuses but when it comes down to it, u gotta bring it. we know what he is capable of and we saw a glimmer of that in game 5, so he needs to step up, simple as that.
