2009 NBA Finals
Hello... I'd like to take this moment for myself to introduce... well... myself. The name is ROC 27. I'm coming over here to make the Silver Screen and Roll my 2nd home. I come to you from Arrowhead Pride, a Kansas City Chiefs blog... I know, I know... But overall I AM a full blooded Los Angeles Lakers fan. I live here in L.A. and have followed the Lakers since I was a little guy...
So, now that we've passed that and you all know that I'm a new kid around these parts, there won't be any hosility towards me if this is a subject that has already been spoken of... I'll be around here for a long time and I look forward to getting to know all of you fellow Lake-Show comrads...
So, let's get to business...
Let's break down the NBA Finals possiblities... Am I putting the cart in front of the horse? Is it too early to talk like the Lakers are already there? In opinion... NO. We're there. We already held up the Western Conference trophy. Kobe already did the interview. Bynum already celebrated at the Playboy Mansion. And we're just waiting for the East to settle... The only thing that isn't yet determined is WHO we'll be facing... So, Laker fans... Who would YOU like to face?
Option A) Boston Celtics
Ahh, the Celtics... Bird vs Magic. Kobe vs ... well... The whole team. You know, I sat here today and watched the Celtics lose to the Bulls. And... Wow! That was such a great game. I mean, it went into TRIPLE OVERTIME for cryin' out loud. But then I realized something... I wish we were the Bulls. No. Not Chicago (God no), but in their position. Why? I like the fights. I like the tension and animosity. I like the competitivness. All of that.
Utah proved to be a bit of a challenge... But not enough to come up with more than 1 win. If you ask me, I'm kinda bummed that Sacramento isn't as good as they used to be. I'm kinda bummed that the Suns didn't make the playoffs. It would have been a pretty sweet series against rivals of that sort. So, what's the next best thing? ... Yup, you guessed it; The Boston Celtics. We hate them and they hate us. As I mentioned before, I AM a Chiefs football fan and I Hate the Raiders to an unbelievable amount... Well, I'm a Laker fan who hates the Celtics almost as much. I would LOVE to redeem ourselves from last year's upset. I know, I know... If we won, people will be like, "Well, the Celtics were missing KG. It's not even something to be proud of." And my response to that... If Boston was good enough to get through Chicago, Orlando OR the LeBron and the Cavs, then they didn't even NEED KG. Theyre good without him... I think we need that fire under our ass to make sure we punk out Paul Pierce. We need the aggresion that Derrick Rose showed to shut down Rondo. Our bench needs the motivation to out perform the Boston bench.
But then the question comes up... Is Boston the only team that we can have this heated series with? Cue...
Option B) Chicago Bulls
Ben Gordon, Joakim Noah, Derrick Rose and company have really made their stand and showed this post-season that they aren't going to be pushovers. I mean, here they are giving the CURRENT NBA champs a run for their money and are just about ready to send them home (or in this case.. KEEP them home :::Game 7 Saturday, in Boston). How do we match up? Rose (or Gordon) vs Kobe? Noah vs Gasol? Salmons vs Odom? I think it comes down to experience. And we're just too long to let this young Chicago team challenge us the way they've challenged Boston thus far. Next....
Option C) Orlando Magic
A big, big team... A team that had our number this past season. Can Andrew Bynum step up his game against Dwight Howard? I'm not gonna lie, but I doubt it. I think Bynum could play on a guy like Yao Ming. Ming doesn't have the explosiveness that Howard does. I think Bynum could have a real hard time with Howard... And don't get me started on Gasol. But that's all we have. Odom could play Howard (6-11 Howard vs 6-10 Odom) but I think Odom might have his hands full with Rashard Lewis at Foward. This is a potential 7 game series. Pretty interesting to see if this actually happens. I think their big men could give our big men a challenge... but with that being their strong points... Insert Mr. Kobe Bryant. Kobe would dominate the Magic backcourt. All we'd have to do is watch the 1 on1's and if they aren't there and it's all double teams, quick pass to Ariza, Sasha, or Fish and theres the open 3. Thank you Kobe. Your'e a threat without even taking a shot. Lakers take it.
Option D) Cleveland Cavaliers
The battle for Jordan's successor. Does that bother you? Well, too bad. It's the truth. We've waited for the next guy to carry that torch. And it WILL be one of these 2. Sure, Kobe will be done with the game well before LeBron is, but Kobe won't be done for quite a while. He is in his prime. But let's shy away from Kobe vs LeBron for a second... Lakers / Cavs... It's what everyone is waiting for. It's what everyone wants. Is it what YOU want... Well, vote.
I'm not gonna stack my money on the fact that we won in Cleveland when they were undefeated there, like most often do... But it DOES show that they're beatable at home. In my opinion Gasol can take Varejao. I believe Bynum can handle Ilgauskas. Odom can hold Ben Wallace down for the series... So, I think we'll have to focus on Kobe/ LeBron and Mo Williams/ our gaurds. Mo Williams can cut you and we need to find the right guy for the job. Fisher will start, but we need the right backup to keep him fresh. With the arrival of Shannon Brown, we've just became more versatile.
Overall it's more than Kobe vs LeBron. It'll be the ultimate professional series... Boring? Call it what you want, but those will be quite the games.
So there you have it... My 1st post here on Silver Screen and Roll. But have at it Laker fans. Who are we facing in the 2009 NBA Finals?

I KNOW that it’s a little early (I said that in the post)… But do you HONESTLY think that Houston and Denver or Dallas will take our trip to the Finals away from us? Are you joking? I’m sorry, bro.. But I’m counting EVERY one of those chickens before they crack them shells.
I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin.

Well it is. They are the next team we have to face.
I’ll pay attention to the Eastern Conference when it matters.

I am hoping to see the Lakers and Cavs…
…in the finals. I think Kobe vs. Lebron can be a rivalry on par with Magic vs. Bird. You’d have a team that finished 66-16 playing against a team that finished 65-17. You’d have the near invisible team at home playing against the one team that beat them at home (when it mattered).
One injury or sloppy performance could ruin this dream finals match up, so my fingers will remain crossed that this happens.
BTW, I think Dwayne Wade belongs in any discussion that involves that NBA’s best player, right along with Kobe and Lebron.

Even though...
this entire “analysis” is full of ludicrous statements (example : Lakers are already in the Finals?) I’ll just focus on one.
Lamar Odom can’t dream of guarding Dwight Howard.

Nevermind..
I have a new favorite ludicrous statement:
We need the aggresion that Derrick Rose showed to shut down Rondo
LOL The guy is averaging a triple double for the SERIES. I’m pretty sure the last guy who did did that played for the Lakers… I think you know who he is.

You guys are like the worst Laker fans I've ever come across...
Where in the hell are you all from, cause around my parts everyone of the Laker fans I KNOW are freakin’ pumped about the playoffs. We watch games at my house and we just know that this post season belongs to US. You can call it presumptuousness, I don’t give a shit… I call BEING CONFIDENT in OUR team! …. Then again.. You’re from Buffalo. Hahaha!

The battle for Jordan’s successor. Does that bother you? Well, too bad. It’s the truth. We’ve waited for the next guy to carry that torch. And it WILL be one of these 2
Kobe has been carrying the torch for years. While LeBron has been garnering more attention than Kobe (lately), Kobe has always been the better player offensively, defensively, and has easily been the better closer and performer in the clutch.
In my opinion, as well as the opinion of many others, alot of the publicity differences between LeBron and Kobe can be attributed to Kobe’s rape case (which was dropped).
Kobe was the NBA’s golden child up until the trials. He had all the sponsors kissing his feet. During the rape case, his sponsors dropped like flies; understandably so, as I can’t imagine a company who wants to be associated with a possible felon. However, after the turmoil from the case had settled, Kobe reassumed his position at the top of the NBA. He proved his hunger and dedication by flying to the courtroom for a hearing and back to LA for games. He earned scoring titles. He put the Lakers on his back for consecutive seasons in the unprecedented competition in the Western Conference, as opposed to LeBron’s considerably weaker East, while Mitch Kupchak and the front office lent him no help. At this point, the sponsors came back to Kobe, and still come back to him to this day. But, Bryant declines offers in effort to keep self respect. Why should he rejoin with his sponsors when they weren’t ready to stand by him through the thick times?
LeBron is on a way faster pace than Kobe in terms of marketing and publicity to catch Michael Jordan, at least, nowadays its that way. It used to be Kobe in the spotlight, with LeBron making a boom with all the hype in his rookie year. After the trials, LeBron assumed more of the throne. Now, and for the past couple years, Kobe is back. He is sharing the spotlight with LeBron; it doesn’t matter to Kobe Bryant anymore. The world’s best player just wants to win.
As I stated earlier, this is my opinion. I’m not saying someone is right and the rest are wrong, this is just how I, and many others see the current situation.
If there has ever been a successor to Jordan, it was and is Kobe. From a talent and performance aspect, at least.
Oh yeah, Michael and Kobe are the only two in my mind that have that unquenchable drive to be better, to win, to dominate, to be the best. They are unmatched in that category.

Kobe Bryant and Jordan are the best players in this aspect:
They must always get better, even though they are the best, they must always win, and when mad are completely unstoppable.

You can say that Jordan won six with no help
And Kobe only won three with Shaq. But that’s not true, Jordan had Pippen, Longley, Cartwright, Rodman a whole supporting cast. So don’t just say Jordan is better than Kobe without an argument.

longley and cartwright? come on now. listen, i am lakers fan. i love kobe. but there is no way an argument can be made that kobe is a better player than jordan. it wasn’t just shaq and kobe. the lakers had great role players, arguably better ones than the bulls. fisher, fox, horry, ron harper and glen rice at one point. even malone and payton. kobe has lost 2 titles. he could have had 5 already. there is no player that is as good as jordan was. kobe is the best player today. jordan is the best ever. (and i don’t even like him). magic is my favorite of all time.

I have to agree and disagree...
Jordan was an all-around better player than Kobe is. He always had a better sense of when to push it and when to get the team mates involved. During his championship years I never saw him get stripped of the ball as he tried to force things in traffic. Kobe unfortunately still tends to do this more often than I like (at least once every game).
Jordan did however have some great supporting casts and any claims to the contrary are just erroneous. During the entire decade of the 90’s the second best player in the NBA was Scottie Pippin. In fact, if there was one player in the NBA, at the time, who could do a decent job of defending Jordan, it was Pippin. Putting the two best players in the league on the same team was huge advantage to start with. During their first run they Horace Grant (a solid all star at the time) and they had Rodman (another solid all star) during their second run. In fact Rodman was one of the best low post defenders and rebounders the game has ever seen.
Kobe is still an all time great NBA player like Magic and Bird were but I just don’t think anyone has ever played the game on Jordan’s level and that’s not a knock on Kobe.
Lebron, ironically, actually reminds me more of Magic than anyone else. He’s another freakishly large guard like Magic was and they share a similar jovial sense to playing the game. Lebron, like magic was, is an excellent passer and gets the whole team involved. I do think that Lebron is evolving this style of play to another level though as he looks like he has developed a stronger game in terms of taking the ball to the rim.

I really want to see Lakers vs. Cavs
Kobe vs. Lebron, superstar vs superstar, you cant have a more classic series than that. If this match-up does happen this could be one of the most exciting NBA Finals ever.
If you want a success story just take a look at mine.

Nice post Roc. Rec'd.
I think it is going to be the Cavs. But I like what you said about missing the animosity from some years ago. We need a bitter rivalry to hone our edge so to speak. Houston should prevent a “slight” challenge, but I think the Cavs are the ones we should be gunning for in the end. Kobe – Lebron would be a classic.

if the celtics somehow make it to the conference finals to face the cavs, and if they get garnett by then, i wouldn’t be surprised if the celtics beat them. the celtics with kevin garnett, can beat anybody.

We already beat them WITH KG
And I bet anything in the world, if Boston makes it, KG will do some LAME surprise return to make him look like a hero.

I think the Celts really miss the bench play of PJ Brown and James Posey
They are not as deep as they were last year, and it will hurt against deeper teams like the Cavs (and Lakers if they get that far). Garnett is the difference maker on the defensive side for the Celtics, and if he doesn’t come back, I don’t see them winning again this year. But yes, if he comes back, the Lakers would have their work cut out for them. Although, we are a better team this time around. Ariza is the guy who can be a difference maker for us. I love his defense, and when we get the bonus 20 points out of him, Damn! Watch out!

do u guys think we will resign both ariza and odom after the season?
by chaucer on May 3, 2009 10:29 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
We gotta sign Ariza
But I feel like they are always looking to unload Odom. They just can’t find the right deal to make it worth it.
by TheQ on May 4, 2009 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would think so. We should keep Ariza and Kobe loves Odom… I don’t see why we wouldn’t keep both of them, but its all dependent on how the season ends.
by intuitive on May 4, 2009 5:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yup they do. cavs will beat the hawks in 5 games. celtics will beat orlando in 6. lakers will beat houston in 4. denver will beat dallas in 6.

I think we might lose one or two to Houston, but we will beat them!
Denver looked good last night. Billups has made a difference for those guys.
