Game Thread: Utah Game 3 - Second Half
First half has been U-G-L-Y, but the Lakers are a lot closer than they deserve to be. How is this not a blowout yet?

While Kobe is 1-10 from the field at least he’s driving the ball and creating second opp. for Lamar instead of jacking up terrible contested midrange jumpers.
Yep
For many games, Kobe is a tale of two halves, so this is a decent sign

i know we’re not grabbing rebounds but we did a really good job of denying deron from getting into the paint, and i mean a really good job. doesnt really matter though when we give up offensive rebounds after every miss
Lakers tend to be two different teams in two different halves
Play well in the first half, come out flat in the second. Play poorly in the first, come out with energy in the second.
That’s hopeful.
Strength & Honor
Not shooting
just that things are going their way. It has to swing in our favor soon.
GO BRONCOS IN 2009 AND BEYOND!!
Lakers lead Utah 2-0
Problem is: the 3rd Quarter Lakers have been laying eggs in the 3rd Q...
Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...
In the second half we need to bring some intensity and attitude.
GO BRONCOS IN 2009 AND BEYOND!!
Lakers lead Utah 2-0
Ha ha:
Ernie: “Why is Kobe 1 out of 10 in the first half?”
Class Clown: “Because he missed 9 shots!”
Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...
Lakers are destined to win the title...
Your two all-stars are 4-18
Your starting center has played 6 minutes
You shoot 30%
You are outrebounded by 10
You play in the most hostile arena in the country
You’re down by a measly 4 points at the half.
Tonight, there's nothing in the glass -- it's a race to scoop up spilled beverages off the table...
Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...
It's obvious...
that it has a lot to do with the crowd and the hostile environment. If you were expecting all the Laker players to come out like they did in the first two games, you flat out don’t know much about basketball.
eh?
Cleveland isn’t a hostile environment? Bynum and Gasol need to prove that they can perform in a tough arena.
draft dejuan blair
I agree, but...
it’s the first half of the first road playoff game for Bynum. Give him some time to adjust. Pau is known to stink it up occasionally. If he performs like this throughout the series, then it means something.
That's why...
Portland got blown out on their homecourt in the playoffs by a team seeded one step below them?
Or Golden State had a losing home record?
Utah was blown out by GS at home and lost to Minnesota
Portland lost because pretty much no one had every played in a playoff game. Not too surprising.
Look at GS’s home and road records, and tell me there isn’t a dramatic improvement.
draft dejuan blair
Seriously Justin............if you don't think Portland has a great home advantage..............
I don’t know what else to say.
"Don't I know you from somewhere"?. "Nah, that ain't me, I'm from Buffalo" - Axel Foley
I think they do...
Yet I don’t think it’s on the same level as Utah. Utah also has the altitude factor going for them.
I agree the altitude is a big advantage...
but the crowds and arena are similar
"Don't I know you from somewhere"?. "Nah, that ain't me, I'm from Buffalo" - Axel Foley
It looks like the Utah crowd is right on top of the action -- THAT might be why it is regarded as such a loud room.
Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...
so
you’re saying that it’s better to lose to two of the worst road teams in the league with your seeding hopes on the line than lose to a good Houston team in what was the first playoff game for nearly every member of the roster?
draft dejuan blair
But either way my point has gotten buried....
Which was that its the hostile environment that’s causing this some initial road playoff jitters. Remember the Lakers needed 3 games in Utah to win one last year…
+1
Agreed on that. Kid deserves at least a little slack. This is what, his 3rd playoff game, and only his 7th game back from injury?
Strength & Honor
I think Gasol
Has forgotten the soft tab everyone had given him, because he seemed to respond to that at the start of this season. He was physical and finishing with dunks where he used to do lay ups. He has taken a step back from that. Someone need to insult his manhood and get him back to that.

hate to be a broken record
But kenny and charles just inadvertently talked about my point about how Kobe will keep taking those shots if they are ones he can make.
Even if he is missing, he knows it will even out.
That’s the corollary of the non-existence of the hot hand, you keep shooting shots you normally make, even if you aren’t making them, just like you shouldn’t keep shooting shots you don’t normally make, even if you are making them
Actually
That’s an incredibly good point. Not sure I buy the “no hot hand” argument, but you’ve come closer to convincing me than all those experts and two lengthy TrueHoop posts.
Strength & Honor
But the problem is
Kobe does love to take heat checks, too!
But I do think it’s great that he does not let missing makeable shots shake his confidence in his ability. That to me is admirable, and decidely strong-willed. Then again, he knows he’s done the preparation so that helps.
by Gils_Keloids on Apr 23, 2009 8:58 PM PDT up reply actions
I just don't believe that theory... Each shot isn't an independent random event -- hot and cold streaks are a reality, just like there are slumps in baseball and periods when a quarterback can't hit the broad side of a barn or is on fire...
But kenny and charles just inadvertently talked about my point about how Kobe will keep taking those shots if they are ones he can make.
Even if he is missing, he knows it will even out.
Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...
Another good point
That was one of my problems with the whole thing. They compare it to flipping a coin? Only one problem — flipping a coin is pure chance! Shooting is a skill.
Strength & Honor
But you don't get better at shooting during the game
That muscle memory is built through practice
So by the time the game starts your chances of making or missing shots is set
that is what the non hot handers are saying
by Gils_Keloids on Apr 23, 2009 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't know how muscle memory works...
But i don’t think its that simple. I’m sure it involves something about the last move your muscles made.
I don't think they were saying that shooting is pure chance
They were only saying, does the fact that you made the shot before, or two in a row, increase the chances that you will make the next shot (over your normal chance whether or not you made the shot before)

So I read that the Lakers are 2-9 all time in Utah in the playoffs
but I didn’t believe it. Sure enough:
1988: 1-2 in Utah (but 3-1 at home)
1997: 0-3 in Utah (lost series 4-1; the rookie Kobe air balls to end it)
1998: 0-2 in Utah (sweep)
2008: 1-2 in Utah (winning game 6 to close it out)
Oh well, 3-9 sounds much better. :)

I’m more focused on the fact that they didn’t deliver.

I would have had Bynum and Pau in for the last defensive stop

Agreed on both counts
And I would have had Kobe on Williams, or at least Shannon Brown

Here's my way of saying it: "To beat the Lakers, you have to get Kobe chucking."
Proven again. He didn’t take the ball to the hole, the jumpers weren’t falling, and it was a loss.
Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...
To beat the Lakers
Other players have to be off, which makes Kobe shoot more, in which case the chances were they were going to lose anyway
by Gils_Keloids on Apr 23, 2009 10:35 PM PDT up reply actions
But that's saying something entirely different
Because most times, when Kobe’s shooting a lot, it’s because they’re down, time is getting short, and he feels the need to try and bring them back. Fact is, they’re more successful in those situations than if he didn’t do that. But still less successful than when they’re playing with a lead, obviously.
What you’re saying is that if you get Kobe chucking, you have a chance. That’s something different entirely, and I agree with that more than the simple idea that Kobe shooting a lot is what causes the Lakers to lose.

Exactly
How many shots were “chucked”? Two? Three? The rest of those were makeable shots. He was just off.
Again, if you believe in the “cold hand”, maybe he should have stopped shooting, but otherwise, if you have a shot that you make more than half the time, you take it while it’s there.

yeah, he did his thing
Kobe will just had to make a few more buckets,
Pau needed to get tough,
Bynum needed not to foul,
Role Players had to shoot a little better,
and the Laker lost by 2
by Gils_Keloids on Apr 23, 2009 10:34 PM PDT up reply actions
A big difference
Is that the role players didn’t shoot as well in Utah
Trevor 3-9, Sasha 1-5, Shannon 1-4
The good news is
They held Utah to 44% shooting!

We still blew a lead…. and continue to do so. Thats the aspect of the game that bothers me most. We had it. We should have won this game
but again we got complacent and stopped running the offense correctly.
Indeed
But I thought the Lakers would get 1 of 2 anyway … so they better get it on Saturday!

Gotta give it to Boozer
That was completely unexpected, especially that left handed monster slam on Pau.

What adjustments can you make, knowing you'll see some of those same looks in game four?
“Make more shots!”

hahah
You know he doesn’t believe in the “cold hand”!

Oh another point I forgot to make
It was so apparent to me how nervous Pau was at the free throw line. To steal a line from Charles Barkley, Gasol was so tight “you couldn’t get a pea pod up there with a jackhammer!” Those FTs weren’t even close.
I just put the post game thread up
So go ahead and slide on over their with the rest of your thoughts
Ironic
That we are now being compared to the Celtics of last year.
They went to seven in the first round last year against the Hawks.
They beat the Lakers in two regular season games, yet the Lakers were favored in the finals, and now the Lakers beat the Cavs in two regular season games, and it looks like if the Lakers make the Finals, the Cavs will be favored. Except the Cavs will have home court.
I’ll make an exception this time, and not mind being compared to last years’ Celtics.
