Lakers Roll in Game One

Not surprisingly, the Lakers cruised to a 113-100 victory over the Utah Jazz.

The Lakers came out firing on all cylinders in the first half and lead by 22 at the break.  The game was closer than expected at times in the second half, but the Lakers Kobe took over in the fourth and seemed to have an answer every time the Jazz got within 10.

Also great games from Trevor Ariza, who surpassed his career playoff points total with 21, and Shannon Brown, who went 3-3 from behind the arc.

Here is the game recap and the box score

More on our performance coming tomorrow.  In the meantime, enjoy the victory Lakers fans, and this is your post-game thread.  Can't wait until Tuesday!

Go Purple & Gold!

Shannon Brown

I hope his three point shooting can continue to be in effective, because it makes a huge difference.

Hey fellas.

FINALLY, somebody made a SB Lakers blog. Hey Josh, been a long time reader and admirer of your work over at RespectKobe.com. I don’t think there’s anyone more qualified for running this blog.

Now on to the game. I liked a lot of things I saw today. We got absolutely worked on the boards (20 offensive rebounds allowed!), Boozer and Deron both had GREAT games, the Jazz shot a ton of FTs and we STILL came out with a rather comfortable win. We definitely have to work on the glass but I think we might be the worst defensive rebounding team in the playoffs. I’ll post more of my thoughts later. I gotta get back to uni. Great game Lakers!

We need to keep Jazz off the free throw line. They were really attacking in the second half and we just allowed easy baskets or got them on the line. Hopefully the right adjustments will be made for Game 2.

by intuitive on Apr 19, 2009 3:47 PM PDT reply actions

It's no surprise

that the Jazz were so aggressive. This is how they play and they know that this is the only way to beat us. I thought we handled it very well by not settling for jump shots and getting to the line 32 times ourselves.

That being said, it also helps to have tremendous depth at the center and power forward positions. Gasol fouled out, Bynum finished with 5 fouls, and Odom with 4. And we also had the luxury of rotation Powell in at the end. Take away one of those bodies, and we might be singing a much different tune right now

Box Score Analysis
  • 39.1% Defensive FG for the Lakers will get the job done every time
  • Not knocking Deron Williams at all, but 17 assists isn’t always a dominating performance
  • Kyle Korver missed a FT, that is rare
  • Shannon Brown plus 20 – he plays good defense, he makes open shots, what more can you ask for?
  • AK47 minus 21, Derek Fisher minus 8, take what you will from that
  • Lakers 17 turnovers
  • Kobe 40 minutes
  • Lakers bench 12-25 FG, 4-6 3PT FG
  • Paul Millsap 7 offensive rebounds, but several were from the same shot

Good analysis

The AK47 and Fish stats are interesting

by Sideout11 on Apr 19, 2009 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

17 assists

it’s because the offense is built around him passing the ball.

It is dominating in the sense that it means our offense was “working”… he was finding the open guys.
Unfortunately, his shot wasn’t falling… and he should’ve had a lot more assists, looking at all the missed lay-ups and all

Okur is sorely missed for Utah

Against this Laker team the Jazz are just not going to be able to get many layups if Okur isn’t in there to spread the floor. 9 blocks for the Lakers tells you all you need to know in that department. Without Okur able to pull Bynum or Gasol away from the interior, you could see it was extremely difficult for any Jazz player to score near the rim. That’s a big part of why the Jazz only shot 39% from the field. According to ESPN’s shot chart the Jazz only made four layups all day (they had two other shots in the paint that were short jumpers). A key to playoff success is post play on both ends of the floor, and in the absence of a great low-post scoring threat the Jazz need to get layups or else they’re going to be in real trouble.

We need to limit the turnovers, Kobe had 6.

Wow Magic lose at home to the 76’ers. iguodala (sp?) hits a clutch jumper with 2 seconds left. Hedo misses the 3 at the buzzer.

Homecourt advantage isn’t really helping out many teams so far in the playoffs. The road team (aside from Utah and Detroit) have beat the home team.

by intuitive on Apr 19, 2009 5:39 PM PDT reply actions

the only things i really can complain about

are kobe’s turnovers and the jazz’ offensive rebounds. other than that, excellent game

by Adamas on Apr 19, 2009 6:10 PM PDT reply actions

I would definately concur with this. If we can keep them off the boards a little better, Game two will be that much easier. If I remember correctly, Today’s game was very similar to our Game 1 with them in the playoffs last year as far as the rebounding disparity.

Lakers did fine

Lakers can really learn something from this game, they did an ok job but they need more shots for Bynum and protect the paint a little better. Lakers will be fine.

Not to mention less turnovers

Arriba Ariza!

The production from Ariza this afternoon was a welcome surprise. And in a game where Bynum, Gasol and Odom were in constant foul trouble, Trevor took advantage of Utah’s collapsing defense inside and punished the Jazz from long distance (3-4 from beyond the arc). Here is a nice sampling of the quality commenters over at SLC Dunk during the game.

It’s also nice to see trash talking douche Bynum suck it up
You gotta accomplish something before you get full of yourself moron.

Lakers fans are, w/o exception, horrible people
This is especially true of those outside of Cali. They maybe less obnoxious personally, but they have no excuse for liking LA. If you’re gonna be some bandwagon jumping tool who just likes the top tier player, go with Wade or James. At least they aren’t complete douches like Kobe.

This is the silver lining in this game
Lakers fans are the biggest tools in history. They can buy their own damn tacos.

i bet half of them coudln’t name a player on the team besides kobe
Ariza is such a punk.

They all are
God I hate them
nah more like 10 of them are punks and 2 are girls

I hate gasol
He’s such a nancy boy. Looks like an WNBAer when he posts up.

Shut your maw Pau!
You are a whiny little b*tch.

Stay classy SLC, stay classy.

At least there weren’t any Derek Fisher cheap shots. I am sure they are saving those for Thursday.

Gotta remember though, we could scroll through Laker fan reactions to their team losing

And pick the worst stuff and it would look pretty bad.

I really like Pau, but his posting isn’t stylish and he does whine a bit more than most. If those are the faults of this All Star than so be it. He is effective and a great person (how many Unicef Ambassadors are on anyone else’s team).

More generally, good game Lakeshow. However, it does look like the team is giving minimal needed effort out there. Unlikely that many other coaches will be able to exploit Laker’s defense problems as well as Sloan anyway, though.

Not surprised at all with that kind of reaction.

They can say what they want, I really don’t care. We won and that is all that matters.

Jazz fans are the worst.

I have said it for years and years. Worst fans in sports. I could go on and on but what they say and how they act is enough.

5 Things I'm taking away from this game...

1) The team came out jittery and it showed when they let the Nuggets go up 4-0. With Bynum and Ariza on the court it felt like the Jazz were the greater true tested playoff team for about a minute and a half. The Lakers matured rather quickly.

2) Kobe’s and 1 in the first half was beyond impressive and an under appreciated bucket. It was way higher degree of difficulty than his dunk. On that note, it’s good to see Kobe getting athletic again. Despite his TO’s in the beginning and the trey ball not falling, i think he had a good team.

3) The Lakers executed incredibly well in the first half, but again the problem of coming out on a big lead flat and letting it slip away. In letting the lead slip away, we were shown that this isn’t the same team that let the 20 point lead slip away to Boston or that let the Clippers come back from down 19 to within 3. The Lakers never let the Jazz get within nine, despite the Lakers going very cold and the Jazz getting red hot for stretches. The team was able to fight back for momentum without any timeouts as well, a tribute to Jackson’s coaching and team building skills.

4) Despite what Jeff Van Gundy and whatever Utah fans think, I love the tacos chant. It is MORE of a cry for defense than free food. It is a subtle yet haunting declaration of superiority that is right in line with the black humor LA fans must carry themselves with these days.

5) I called the score 114-99 Lakers…so close…

One for the road) It will be interesting to see if Ariza and Brown can continue their strong play in Utah.

It's also like

How the poor-sport Blazer fans were chanting “these refs suck” the other night while their team was getting blown out by 30 at home, as if it was somehow the fault of the officiating that their team was getting tiremarks laid all over them.

by WildYams on Apr 20, 2009 8:28 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think...

its anything even close to chanting that the refs suck.

by Justin N. on Apr 20, 2009 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Couple things

A win is always good, but I agree with Phil, there’s alot to learn from this game. If Trevor and Shannon didn’t have such good games, we could’ve been in trouble.

1. We must step up our defensive rebounding. I saw a couple of plays where our guards started to leak out instead of boxing out and this lead to numerous second and third opportunities for the Jazz. That and the next point are what kept Utah in this game.

2. Limit turnovers. It seemed like we were trying to make too many homerun passes in the first. Kobe was fantastic distributing but it seemed like every possession, he either had an assist or a turnover. It might seem picky to complain about an 11 point lead after the first but this team should be striving for perfection. I’m not as worried about this one as the first though, we should start to settle down.

3. Taco chants are getting pretty annoying. I know that some call it a chant for defense but I just can’t look at it that way. Not when the fans started to boo after DWill made the last layup to get the Jazz to 100.

Anyway, good victory, if Shannon and Trevor stay hot during the post-season we’re going to be unstoppable.

By the way, here's the foul on Millsap on the Kobe dunk

Forearm in the lower back.

But then again, this just reinforces my notion that there’s a foul on 80% of the plays, it’s just up to the refs which fouls to call.

by Gils_Keloids on Apr 20, 2009 9:27 AM PDT reply actions

That was definitely a foul

It’s just that he really didn’t foul Kobe till Kobe already had basically dunked the ball. But just because Milsap was way too late in trying to take a hard foul doesn’t mean he wasn’t trying to take it.

by WildYams on Apr 20, 2009 10:07 AM PDT up reply actions

+1

I think that’s part of why NBA refs have such a bad rep. They really have to make alot of arbitrary decisions because if they were to call everything by the book, the game would get bogged down and no one would watch the game.

So yeah, Millsap did foul Kobe but I understand why Utah fans would gripe. Still a sick jam either way : )
