Lakers-Jazz Open Thread

Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Lakers, Dec 9, 2009 7:30 PM PST

Jordan Farmar gets the thread pic tonight, in recognition of recent outstanding service to the Laker cause. He best not make me regret this decision.

Your drinking-game triggers for tonight are hereby decreed.

  • Any mention of Utah being a "physical team."
  • Any comparison of Deron-Boozer to Stockton and Malone.
  • Vinny Del Negro getting fired.
  • Any talk of the cold weather in LA.
  • As always, my personal favorite: Joel Meyers mentioning points off turnovers.

It actually is quite cold in SoCal tonight: below 60 degrees! I'm good, though. I've got my hot cocoa brewing and my Snuggie fresh from the dryer. It's time to curl up on the couch with our open game thread.

We're right around freezing and falling here in Oregon...

It was 18 degrees when I woke up this morning. We’d usually be around 40 at night…

It's entertaining, but it's all relative. People from the upper midwest probably think I'm a pussy for whining about +18º ........

Kentucky v. UConn has been nothing less than awesome

by Julio Nievas on Dec 9, 2009 8:41 PM PST reply actions

With the Lakers height they should never be outrebounded 23-17 in a half. There’s no reason the Jazz should already have 11 offensive rebounds to the Lakers 5.

by intuitive on Dec 9, 2009 8:41 PM PST reply actions

rebounds are based more on will and hussle than height advantage

one of the reasons the Rockets are in the top half of the league in rebounds.

by desecrator09 on Dec 9, 2009 8:42 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah but if the Lakers were hustling and cleaning the glass, added with their height, there’s no reason they should be outrebounded. That’s what I was insinuating.

by intuitive on Dec 9, 2009 8:44 PM PST up reply actions

I think he's agreeing

Saying the Lakers haven’t been hustling after rebounds

Strength & Honor
It's good to be the Champs

by Josh Tucker on Dec 9, 2009 8:45 PM PST up reply actions

yeah but our frontline guys are natural rebounders

as in, they dont naturally hussle alot and have the will to go to the ball rather than the ball come to them. Its not necessarily because they dont want, just that thats not their natural way of playing that aspect of the game.

by desecrator09 on Dec 9, 2009 8:45 PM PST up reply actions

If they were “natural rebounders” they wouldn’t be getting outrebounded. You need to hustle in order to grab rebounds, the height just gives you an advantage.

by intuitive on Dec 9, 2009 8:47 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah. I got that.

If they didn’t hustle though they wouldn’t be getting as many rebounds as they do. You can’t be JUST tall and grab the amount of rebounds they do. The Lakers hustle to grab boards, as well as use their height to their advantage to outrebound them. Obviously they’re being out hustled on the glass which is why they’re being outrebounded.

I don’t really know what you mean by “natural rebounders” because if they are as “natural” as you insinuate they are then there’d be no real reason they’re getting out-rebounded.

by intuitive on Dec 9, 2009 8:50 PM PST up reply actions

I think we're agreeing on the same thing here lol

but anyways, by Natural Rebounders, i mean that they naturally hussle to get them and their height doesnt make any difference in that. As far as our frontline guys, none of them are Natural Rebounders because they dont have that natural ability in them to hussle and go get the ball rather than to just plainly use their height and let the ball come to them. Hopefully that cleared it up a bit.

I just saw this over at Forum Blue and Gold. Not sure if it is correct, but if it is............AWESOME.

Here are the fewest points by a team in a quarter.

Fewest points, first quarter
4 Sacramento at LA Lakers 2/4/87

Fewest points, second quarter
3 LA Clippers at LA Lakers 12/14/99

Fewest points, third quarter
2 Dallas at LA Lakers 4/6/97

Fewest points, fourth quarter
6 Detroit at Orlando 12/7/93
Golden State at Phoenix 2/28/99
and add the (6) Jazz at Lakers to the 4th quarter lisk for fewest points in the 4thQ

Billy Mac: "Lamar, can you see yourself actually getting in the (boxing) ring"?
Lamar Odom: "No. My face is too pretty."

by pslakerfan on Dec 9, 2009 10:30 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, a Rockets fan.

But I can appreciate something impressive when I see it. Especially when its done to the Jazz. That’s the heartwarming part.

As for Ariza, I’d say we’re pretty happy, with a few reservations that I don’t think really should be laid entirely at his feet.

He’s playing fantastic D, and the steals he gets are impressive, as he will gamble for a take away, but can almost always recover in time if he doesn’t get it. He’s been asked to do more on offense, and he’s trying to oblige. His efficiency has really dropped though, due to games where he just can’t hit the three.

He’s been asked to drive more, and at first his handle was sort of horrific. It seems to have improved to “somewhat painful” since then. He’s scoring more off his drives, and is now finishing with dunks rather than awkward layups that don’t go in. This is a major improvement.

When he doesn’t rush his 3pt shot, it’s a beautiful thing to see. When he does, which is generally when its not absolutely wide open, it usually misses badly.

Overall, I’m very pleased with the Ariza signing, as he and Battier tag teamed LeBron tonight and drove him into a fit of intense whining. He pretty much outplayed James, tonight, too. How do you guys see the Artest deal for LA? Obviously the Lakers are red hot, but I don’t have a read on Crazy Pills.

by Xiane on Dec 9, 2009 10:39 PM PST up reply actions

Artest has been good. I’ve been quite surprised with his passing game and I like that he isn’t going for the 20 foot jumpers s much anymre. Most of his shots have been wide open 3’s or shots close to the basket. He gambles on steals, and tends to earn some “dumb” unnecessary fouls on reach-ins, but for the most part his defense has been solid.

I’m not sure if you’ve already read this article, but if you haven’t it’s worth a look. It goes over the Ariza deal for Houston and the Artest deal for the Lakers quite nicely.

http://www.hoopdata.com/recent.aspx?aid=53

by intuitive on Dec 9, 2009 10:44 PM PST up reply actions

Good article.

Though he misses the recent stuff where Ariza has come out as preferring fine Armagnac as his in-game libation. Trevor says that if you can get away from brand names you can have a finer drink at a lower price. It fits the Rockets ethos I suppose.

by pslakerfan on Dec 9, 2009 10:53 PM PST up reply actions

You know it's funny but I think this is one of those trades that works out for everyone.

Laker fans are ecstatic about Artest. OK I don’t speak for all of us, but it seems to be true. He hasn’t scored a lot, but we don’t really need that. I think if you asked Laker fans before the season what they wanted from RonRon it would probably look something like this.

a) don’t do any stupid shit to mess up a good thing.
b) make your open (really open) threes
c) play great defense.

He has done all three quite well. Also he has been one of the better passers on the team. With so many weapons on this team he has been exactly what we wanted.

We all love / loved Ariza, but I think he needed to go somewhere else if he wanted to be “the man”. I am glad you are enjoying him as much as we did.

Billy Mac: "Lamar, can you see yourself actually getting in the (boxing) ring"?
Lamar Odom: "No. My face is too pretty."

by pslakerfan on Dec 9, 2009 10:47 PM PST up reply actions

I think there is a bit of frustration when he goes 8-23 or something.

But I think when he becomes a 3rd option (say Yao passing to him out of the post) he’s going to go back to being a hyper-efficient player. In the meantime, I think his game is actually growing before our eyes. Opinions differ on this, but its what I’m seeing.

As for Artest, yes, if he’s not just jacking up 3s with 17 seconds left, he’s very effective. He gives you a very physical defender, and for faster wings, Kobe can handle that. Also, it’s just good in some ways to have him on the floor. You know that he’ll lay someone out if the game gets nasty. Yes, that’s not supposed to be part of the NBA any more, but it’s still reassuring.

by Xiane on Dec 9, 2009 10:53 PM PST up reply actions

We are hoping that when he lays someone out.....

that someone is wearing Green.
