Why I don't hate the Spurs.

Recently there was a FanPost here on Silver Screen and Roll titled “Poll: Second Favorite Team?”  There were quite a few different answers and quite a few interesting comments.  I voted for the Spurs with a bit of a caveat…..”I don’t have a second favorite team, but I have only one other team that I respect so I voted for them. Spurs.”  Apparently 8 other people agreed with me since as of now there are 9 votes out of 172 for the Spurs.  I took a little bit of crap (very little actually), but it got me thinking.

Star-divide

Why do Laker fans hate the Spurs?  I understand why I should, but I just don’t.  I think my feelings about other NBA teams can be summed up in three ways.  Hate. Pity. Indifference.  I hate the Celtics (of course), Nuggets, Rockets, Suns, Mavericks (with a passion), Blazers, and a few others as well.  I pity a few like the Clippers, Warriors, Kings, Grizzlies, Nets, and a few others.  I am indifferent about a few as well like the Pacers, Thunder, 76ers, Knicks, Magic, etc.  However I just can’t seem to fit the Spurs into any of these categories.

In reality they fit into their own category…….Respect.  Why do I respect them?  Glad you asked.

To answer that question I have to pose another question.  What do we hate about other teams and their fans?   a) They want respect but they haven’t earned it. (Nuggets, Blazers, Rockets, etc) b) They have beaten/embarrassed the Lakers in the playoffs, and then choked.(Suns).  c)Their fans blame losing on officials or league Bias. (Nuggets x1000),  d)Their fans troll our site and start trouble, disrespect our city, our team, and our fans. (Celtics, Nuggets, Suns, etc).  e) Their team is full of a-holes that don’t deserve our respect (Nuggets……are we sensing a pattern here?) f)They don’t play the right way……or at least most people’s idea of the right way “defense wins Championships right?” (Suns, Warriors, Knicks).

So let’s go through the list and see where the Spurs fit.  Have they earned respect?  I think so.  Of their 4 championships only once did they “take one away from us”.  And when they beat us, they win it all.  Do you ever hear/read their fans blame losing on officials?  I don’t remember seeing it.  As a matter of fact when Fisher fouled Brent Barry in the playoffs most Spurs fans I heard said something like this…..”You can’t expect to get that call in the Playoffs” or “We shouldn’t have put ourselves in that position to begin with”.  In short, they blame their team not the League (sound like another team you know? Think Purple and Gold).  Have you seen any Spurs trolls around here lately?  Seen any anti-Lakers posts on Pounding the Rock lately?  Me neither.  Think about Duncan, Ginobili, Parker, Jefferson, etc…. Any a-holes in the group?   Any DUI’s.  Any arrests for domestic violence?  I don’t remember any.  Lastly, do they play the game the right way?  I think so.

In conclusion, I understand the rivalry, I agree with rooting against them, but I just can’t HATE them, I just can’t.  I respect them too much.  To be honest they are the only other team I do respect.

I am curious to read what any of you think…….thanks.

I pity the Spurs

because if it wasn’t for the Lakers, they’d have a few more banners hanging in their arena :)

I hate the spurs

Why not? What’s to like about them?

Boring, efficient, blank-faced Duncan? No.

Balding, traveling, Argentinian 6th man? No.

French man child puppy-boy with a hot wife? No.

They are so boring and anti-Laker I can’t stand them. They’re from Texas, which still believes it is a country unto itself. Okay so I liked Shawn Elliot, but remember that long-armed freak Malik Rose? Ugh… dirty-playing Bowen? Yuck.

How can you not hate the Spurs?

Think about the way they run the organization

Gregg Popovich was the GM and had to coach the team because he put the team together and they weren’t winning. Now he has 4 rings. And they select good people and talented players. Tim Duncan is a class act. Ginobili works extremely hard despite being injured all the time. And they seem to be able to bring in veterans and have them produce (i.e. Michael Finely, Glen Davis) and your no namers (i.e. Ime Udoka, Roger Mason Jr).

I have respect for them. And with them battling for as many rings as the Lakers do in the current era, I respect them. I’m with you pslakerfan.

Well let me welcome everybody to the wild wild west. A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness.

I never said I didn't respect them

Doesn’t mean I have to like their team!

On a serious note, basketball is just a game. Sure it’s “life” to some, but one of the best parts of being a fan is you can “hate” another team without feeling bad. I think you know what I mean. Real hate has no part of being a fan of the sport.

You can't do anything but respect the Spurs

They have the best-run organization in the league, the second-best coach in the league (or first, depending on who you talk to), the game’s best (or luckiest) GM, and a set of players who ooze nothing short of completely unblemished professionalism. You can say that Duncan is boring, but the entire team takes the cue from him and erases self-interest at the door. And for a small market team that has rarely had to exceed the luxury tax, they’ve won four titles in ten years and have been competitive every year.

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

agree. the spurs are definitely one of the classiest teams in the league (in terms of players, coach, etc)

I don’t really know about their fans though. there are always trolls and classy fans for every organization.

I respect them more than any other opposing team

competititon is competition so there will always be room for dislike. But when it’s all said and done, their organization and players are great and deserve all the respect they get.

Popovich is a no nonsence coach. I like that. They are one of the best at drafting and developing players. Personally, their best attribute in my opinion is that whether they win or loose they do it in a respectful way.

i freakin’ love g-pop, he and pj are the broken molds in NBA coaching. the team itself is crap. i guess i’ve been rooting for the Lakers too long. seems like its cool to have two teams these days. how ’bout these questions? why would you need a backup favorite team? who did you root for after the suns beat us in the playoffs? did you root for the spurs in ’03? how about ’07? if a Laker player asked you that question, what would be your answer then? In the 80’s, we played for the ring 8 times in 10 years. So, we were so busy winning back then, you never heard of a second favorite team. Now with missing a playoff series and us not in the big dance every year, fans have a second team now. Well, I will keep it historically correct for the few old schoolers here at SS&R. I have a different theory why some people now have a so called 2nd fav team..

from the sounds of it you were around when loyalty meant something different than the rest of us. CA Clark posted an article on the similar subject. it is actually something more obvious.

The NBA has become more commercialized which means that it is now reaching a greater audience. The internet, Cable and the greater popularity of the NBA has more to do with that. Just look at the God status that the originaly Dream Team was treated with. That is the time when the game transitioned into what it is today. The game reaches a greater number of people because we have more access to it.

there is nothing wrong with loving the Lakers as much as you do. I like that. But! to have respect or to not hate a team doesn’t mean anything or has absolutely nothing to do with the love I for the Lakers. Two different things.

To respect the Spurs doesn’t translate or equate to saying that they are my back up team.
After the suns beat us in the playoffs I couldnt watch another game until the following season.
I have never rooted for the Spurs.
If a Lakers players asked me something I would say the same thing. Why would I lie?

Whenever you see interviews by current and past NBA players and they are asked who’s game they respect the most a lot would tell you Kobe Bryant. does that mean that they are less loyal to their own team? NO! They just respect Kobe for what he does on the court. I think you might be taking the words “respect” and “not hate” way out of context. I don’t think that pslaker fan once said anything to the effect of the Spurs being his “2nd favorite”.

but its the person, KOBE BRYANT, NOT the team...

is my argument to the post. like i said, i love g-pop as a coach. that has nothing to do with the spurs. if he went to boston, i would still have reverence for g-pop, it wouldn’t translate over into me liking boston. Teams don’t move around like staff, so it makes sense to like the staff, not the teams. respect the staff, not the organization. like people in the rest of the world don’t like America, but they are so intrigued with Obama. Staff over organization. Didn’t you really like Mike Bibby when he was going against the Lakers as a King but couldn’t stand the Kings as an organization?

wtf?

Didn’t you read the article? respecting another team is not the same as loving that team or being one’s 2nd fave team. I understand what you’re saying, and it could even be used to differentiate the loyal fans from the bandwagon loaders. but while this article stemmed from the 2nd fave team article, this is a different article, with a different talking point.
also, if you don’t respect your enemy’s organization, you will tend to not care about what they are capable of. When you do this, more often than not, you will lose to that enemy.

I Don't Hate Them Either

I suppose it might be because they have rarely been relevant to the Lakers in the post-season. When both the Lakers and the Spurs have had competitive teams, and we have met in the playoffs, we have almost always beaten them. However, beyond this, and beyond preferences in basketball style (many do not care for the Spurs because they are/were an efficient, but boring half-court team, at least in the Duncan era), they do remain one of the lest douchebag franchises as far as their Front Office, Coaching, and players. Not even their fans are particularly obnoxious. I have seen tons of trolls from Dallas, apparently feeling their sexual inadequacy, some from Houston, but rarely any from San Antonio on Laker sites. The fanbase itself, I find to be just as knowledgeable as the more experienced fanbase of the Lakers (not talking about the Laker groupies of which there are legion).

No, all in all, the San Antonio Spurs I tolerate well. Certainly, there are other franchises that have earned our disgust for their past actions, first in the list, the Lepers from Boston. Others are just annoying, such as the Aimless Wanderers (Portland) simply because all they do is talk and shrilly demand that we take notice of them, but have done absolutely nothing to merit our consideration. The same discourse is valid also for Denver, and Dallas. Until they actually take something away from us, and back up their childish attempts to gain our attention, they are simply flys on roadkill, and nothing more.

Man, Blazer love yesterday & Spur love today. WHAT THE F?

The one thing I’ll give the Spurs is that they have actually won some championships. But I attribute half of them to old twinkle toes Shaq not cutting down on the cheeseburgers and to Shaq & Kobe fighting.

Lots of articles recently about the Spurs’ “awesome” front office. Pa-Leeze!

I read recently that Dr. Buss has owned the Lakers for 29 years. During that time they have won 9 rings and been to the finals 14 times. So I would love to win again this year to make it an even 10 rings in 15 finals appearances over 30 years. Let the Spurs shove that up their awesome front office. (I may not have the numbers exactly right because I am too lazy to look it up, but the point is the same.)

In spite of certain camps attempting to muddy the waters about what the definition of a decade is, and when it starts and finishes, the fact remains that the Lakers were the Team of the Decade, having won 4 Titles to the Spurs 3 Titles. Measuring Other Franchises To The Lakers Is Too High A Standard

No, I have no love for any franchise other than the Lakers. This includes the Blunt Rowels, and the Aimless Wanderers. However, I can tolerate San Antonio for several reasons. They are a small-market team. This is a very limiting factor usually, and they have managed to overcome this limitation and field some decent squads. No other franchise has the owner that we have. No other franchise has the same fire in the belly to win that he has. Therefore, it is sort of unfair to compare the Laker franchise with a small-market franchise. I do admit that the Spurs Front Office in the last couple of years has not been as incisive in their decisions in the last couple of years, but they are grappling with a situation of an aging team, with waning skills, in a small-market, and in a bad economy. Even so, they attempted to roll the dice this off-season and things just did not work out for them. Jefferson just is not the impact player that they had hoped.

by cuckooroller on Dec 9, 2009 9:34 AM PST reply actions

Dude, that is a sweet story but it is a load of . . . The Spurs’ owners are wealthy independent of their ownership of the Spurs. They could spend the same as the Lakers without affecting their personal fortunes.

In contrast, Dr. Buss’ money is almost all tied up in the Lakers. So that means signing Bynum to a big contract for example is a direct risk to his family’s well being. It may work out or it may not but it is an actual risk.

Plus, the Spurs’ owners regularly stay under the salary cap and use the money Dr Buss pays them in luxury tax to pay off the mortgage on their F’ing arena rather than invest in salary for better players. That’s what makes me want to puke when I hear how awesome they are for exceeding the salary cap this year.

Go ahead and like ‘em if you want but don’t fall for the bullsh.

Please use the teams' real names

I know its a mundane rule, but if we don’t want anybody calling our team F@kers or other crap, it’d be hypocritical of us to not give other teams the same respect.

by C.A. Clark on Dec 9, 2009 11:07 AM PST up reply actions

I Used To Agree With You

However, though I can understand the good sentiments motivating you in this statement, and though I would gladly desist if respect was shown toward our team, I have found that this is simply not the case. It is a matter of choice. The use of all sorts of derogations towards our team is, and has been in the past, ubiquitous. Therefore, I personally do not see that being nice, and respectful towards those that already largely disrespect us, and our team, is productive. My use of nicknames is certainly reactive. Had I not grown tired of constantly finding widespread hate and derogation when speaking of our team, I would not have coined the nicknames that I use.

I know where you're coming from

I stayed away from internet communities for years because of exactly the type of people you are talking about. They can be … overwhelming. I can understand the frustration of hearing the Lakers and their fans deal with constant negativity from other fanbases.

But here, on SS&R, we try our best to hold our members to a very high standard of behavior, and we try to do so without killing every conversation that gets the least bit contentious, without banning people at the very first sign of disagreement. We want to encourage the best and brightest from other team’s fanbases to come here, and we can’t do so by forcing them to follow rules that we don’t enforce en masse. I can’t promise every rival fan who comes here will be respectful of the Lakers or of us, but every one who is not will either be talked down off of their troll ledge, or be made to leave eventually.

I can’t control how you choose to identify teams or interact with other fans elsewhere. If you choose to call teams by nicknames of your own creation across the web, so be it. But we have created a pretty damn good environment on this site so far, one that has largely escaped the corruption of idiocy so prevalent on the net. So, your “retaliation” against other teams and fans isn’t necessary, because none of those people are here.

by C.A. Clark on Dec 9, 2009 12:40 PM PST up reply actions

I Understand Your Position

However, I would have you note that the nicety does not seem to extend across the various mirror sites of fanbases making up this group of sites. An example, the necessity of defacing with an asterisc the name Laker on Blazersedge.

Good luck with developing your sites. Personally, I am not politically correct enough to be worthy of this site. I have just seen too much abuse and hate against our team to not have become exasperated about it, and to react in kind. Since I do respect your position, I will not post again.

by cuckooroller on Dec 9, 2009 4:11 PM PST up reply actions

Seriously?

As with the internet at large, I can’t control other SB Nation sites, and I’m sure you know that.

I have to admit, I never thought that rule would be a reason why someone would walk away. On the one hand, I’m impressed with your conviction. On the other hand, I’d hate to lose you as a participating member over something so trivial. I assure you, the name rule has nothing to do with political correctness. It’s just the opposite side of the strategy you are currently employing. Your position is that there’s too much Laker hate not to respond in kind. Our position is that, in this isolated community, we can remove the hate and make such actions unnecessary. After all, an eye for an eye makes both men pirates … or something like that.

I hope you reconsider. From what I’ve seen, your opinions are quite “worthy” of this site, minor quibble with the nicknames aside.

Degrees between hate & respect

There is different degrees where respect goes: Organization as a whole, the team itself and fans. Some examples: The Warriors suck on the organization level and I hate how they ruined a promising squad that was a feel good story a few years ago but I respect their fans for being die hards to the end. The Spurs I respect as an organization with a few chips in the bag and a core group they kept together but I can’t stand the team due to living in South Texas where I am constantly bombarded with Spurs signs, flags and commercials. The Nuggets fans I hate due to a sense of entitlement but I respect their squad, I mean when you dread playing a team that you know can go toe-to-toe with you; have to respect that. Don’t get me wrong I do not have a favorite squad other than the Lake show. But I am a fan of players on other teams that I root for to have a good game.

I hate the fact that Tony Parker gets every call diving down the lane, when what he really needs is to get flattened like the annoying cockroach he is…

I hate Manu Ginobili’s unathletic set shots for 3…

I hate their boring team colors, their boring offensive sets, and their boring fans…

As far as I know their fans aren't assholes.

That is why we don’t hate them. If their fan base was a bunch of front runners like a lot of Celtics fans (half) or rabid like Blazers fans (most), or just downright juvenile and angry like Jazz fans (all), then we might hate them.

Plus, they’re too bland to hate. But I do have some contempt for them.

Rocket fans are by far the worst, and Magic fans are probably the best.

Winning 2 championships and then dropping off the face of the planet does stuff to you.

BTW, I almost forgot....

Does anyone want my tickets for tonights game? No, I am not trying to sell them, but I probably can’t use them and someone should. I have them up for sale on Laker web-site, but if they don’t sell, I would gladly forward them to one of you fine people if you can go. Let me know.

I won’t post my e-mail address here, but if you type my screen name with @live.com after it, you might be able to find me.

If it weren’t for the Spurs, we’d have twice as many people crying conspiracy.

I respect almost any organization dedicated to winning. But I’ll only root for one.

Great post sir...

…I never thought of it this way. I always say “F the Spurs,” but it’s never in a malicious way like I would for the Celts/Kings/Nuggs/Suns, etc. I agree with all of this. Also, I think Gregg Popovich is an outstanding coach. The Lakers and Spurs have dominated this decade/era, and I’m glad it’s a class act like themselves that has done it with us. Their fans are usually class acts as well.

For example, it pains me that the Celtics have won one this decade, but for some reason, it never pained me that the Spurs did. They were just a better team than us those years they won, but they were never a-holes about it.

That said, I believe their window is officially closed, even though it’s somewhat early in the season to be putting nails in coffins.

Go Lakers!!!

More than just respect

Now that they aren’t so much a threat to L.A. anymore, I can’t help but like the Spurs. It has nothing to do with their style or actual play, but from Popovich on down, the Spurs are the kind of down to earth dudes that I would like to just spend time with. Some of the moments that have led me to this attitude include …

-Brent Barry pump fakes Derek Fisher into the air, doesn’t get a foul call that probably should have come, and afterward the entire team, to a man, says that you can’t expect to get that call at the end of a game.
- Gregg Poppovich employs the Hack-a-Shaq strategy on the Phoenix Suns in the 2008 playoffs, and Shaq complains and calls him a coward in the offseason. GP’s response? In the first game of the next season, GP has Michael Finley intentionally foul Shaq on the first posession, then gives him the Fonz with a huge grin on his face.
-This preseason, Manu Ginobli caught a freaking bat that was flying around the arena he was playing in.

Outside of Steve Nash and anybody on the Lakers, The entire Spurs team would be my first choice to just spend some time hanging out with those dudes.

I don't hate the Spurs' fans either

Except when some of them suggest that Manu Ginobili is just as good or better than Kobe. Ugh.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THE SPURS LOVEFEST ON A LAKER SITE!

People in case you have forgotten, THEY CLOSED THE FORUM! they tortured us in 1999, Bruce Bowen, the favorable calls and favorable interpretation of the rules that GAVE them the title when Horry hip checked Nash. Bruce Bowen, Manu Ginobili flopping like there is no tomorrow, Bruce Bowen and his underhanded defensive tactics, Avery Johnson’s annoying accent, the name Speedy Claxton.

The bogus was they landed Tim Duncan after tanking the season (some say it was because David Robinson’s injury but I remember they gave up in more than a few games.)

Them beating New York when I so badly wanted Ewing to get his ring.

Their claim to be a DYNASTY and team of the decade uugghh it makes me sick, and when I think of them beating us to end our 3-peat I want to throw up.

Overall I HATE THE SPURS, but I do respect them, and their fans are really classy especially the ones at Pounding the Rock.

I Loathe the Spurs but not as much as I HATE the L-eastern conference. There is a new found arrogance in the L-east and I find myself rooting for all teams from the West to beat their sorry asses.

You summarized what some of us saying. Our comments are not any different than what you posted:

We might not be saying it the way that you are saying it but deep down most of us have the same sentiment as you do.

I respect them only because in my opinion they are the lesser of 2 EVILS

I need them to be strong to act as a buffer against the L-east who the last time I checked are leading us (the West) with more overall titles as a conference.

I’ve always hated the L-east and thought that they’ve been lucky as hell to be blessed with 2 truly great dynasties (Celtics & Bulls) who have accounted for 23 titles!. But I think the West has always been more competitive even during the 90’s when Jordan ruled the roost.

Back to the point I hate San Antonio but i’m forced to respect them and hope that they remain strong especially in the coming years as the NBA attempts to fold over and give the keys to the league to Lebron and his Cavaliers (now that’s a team that I hate)

well we kinda got retribution when we sorta shut down the Alamodome in 2002.

and when I think of them beating us to end our 3-peat I want to throw up.

i agree that was painful to watch but luckily we got retribution in 04
(thanks dfish)
but the harsh feelings are mostly gone, partially cause the spurs have been in decline recently and also no more bruce lee bowen…and we respect things and events alot more later on than right at the moment.

Great post

Exactly my sentiments. The Spurs have never done anything to earn disrespect. If you considering losing a fair game without any cheap shots, fights, taunting, or other unsportsmanlike activity as enough reason to disrespect a team, then you need to re-evaluate how you view life, people, and the world around you. Because you are one sad individual.

That being said, the Spurs haven’t given us a reason to hate them. Every loss I felt proud of, because we got beat fair and square.

i never hated the spurs, its pretty much impossible to hate the guys on their team

- pop- top 5 coach in the league
- duncan – best pf in the league for most of the decade, and he is classy about it
- parker – the guy has heart galore. Not as much as D-Fish, but still respect the way he plays. He has a very similar demenour to Pau
- Ginobli – diamond in the rough. great story, its sad he cant stay healthy
- mcdyess – another sad story of a really talented guy with injury problems

everyone else on their team is lame however… I really didnt like Bowen tho, hated him more than raja bell, christie, patterson, or any of the so called kobe stoppers

In Kobe we trust!
