on the top 50 of todays best players
there is no way KG and Shaq should be ahead of Gasol. Also, i’m glad to see that 4 of the Lakers starters are on the list.
I think smashing the Suns made me realize how far Kobe and the Lakers have come from five years ago, when the Suns had the world at their feet.

I love this site
Any other messageboard with the words “Kobe” and “#1” attached would be littered with trolls right about now. Good job with keeping this site respectable mods.
btw..this might be a stupid question
is that T shirt really available?

Everytime there's a survey of GM's, players, scouts, or coaches....
It’s always Kobe who gets the nod as the best player, player to take the last shot, best leader, or most intelligent. Yet, the most of media or bloggers say LeBron.
Basically, it seems that it boils down to media hype.
I think I’ll go with the people who play or played or make it their business to know these things. That list was a very credible list and Kobe was chosen 62 to 34? That’s a rout.
To be fair
This poll asked who is the “greatest” player, which has different implications than “best” player.
Usually “greatest” takes into consideration career accomplishments.
This is the same argument people would use against Kobe when comparing to Michael Jordan. Of course, MJ is more accomplished and has more hardware … but that doesn’t settle who is the better player.
For example, Bo Jackson can’t be considered one of the greatest running backs because of the brevity of his career, but I believe he belongs up there with Walter Payton and Barry Sanders when you talk about his ability.

Good observation
in regards to the “greatest” comment.
On the Bo Jackson comment, if Barry Sanders is in any list then Bo certainly deserves to be there. By the way, I was at the playoff game against the Bengals when he got hurt. It was my one and only football game I have ever been to.

Hmmm.
Yes, “greatest” does have a different implication than “best,” but it seems that the the question was posed to mean who is the best today.
Kobe or LeBron? LeBron or Kobe? Trying to settle on the best player in the NBA—Lakers guard Kobe Bryant(notes) or Cavaliers forward LeBron James(notes)—is no easy choice.
But, according to Sporting News’ panel of experts, Bryant is the clear-cut No. 1. Bryant tops SN’s list of the 50 greatest players in the NBA today, as selected by a panel of 107 Hall of Famers, major award winners, executives, current players and coaches and other basketball experts.
If it was strictly about the “greatest” as far as career, then I’m fairly certain that Timmy and Shaq would rank Top 3-4 easily. Followed by Jason Kidd to round out the top 5.
As a side note
It also helps your perception when your team is winning.
I’m very wary of accepting these surveys, because I’ve been so against them when people would leave Kobe off in years past, mainly because his team stunk.

Definitely helps.
Kobe made absolute terrible teams competitive from 05/06 -mid 07/08, but it never seemed to affect Dwyane Wade’s status when the Heat were terrible.
I had a feeling LBJ might waffle.
Whether it’s just to draw attention to himself or he’s really flaking. This is no surprise. This just goes hand in hand with his front-running. When the spotlight is on others and the mood is right, he has to put out his “preliminary” inclusion. Now he’s wavering? Just do it. We all want to see him in it. He owes us one after missing out on the Finals last season. I think he could pull off a real foul line dunk.
based on his comments
it seems to me that he is saying that he got caught up with the emotion of being there but that looking at it now it doesn’t meet his standards as far as what he thinks the dunk contest should be all about. He thinks it’s too much of a show… I said this earlier but i’ll say it again:
so isn’t throwing talcum powder and doing picture taking stunts prior to a game a show also?
I think smashing the Suns made me realize how far Kobe and the Lakers have come from five years ago, when the Suns had the world at their feet.

He's drawing attention to himself
Simple as that.

Ryen Russilo made a great point in the NBA Today podcast.
He said Sasha plays “fake hustle defense.” The kind of defense a “coach’s son plays,” where they just look active and “annoy the hell out of you”…Duke “slapping the floor” type of defense, then the defender just blows by you.
Haha.
that top 50 list is so out of whack
its obvious that SN didn’t make it clear what the contributors were voting on. It’s a mix of accomplishment and current ability, with no clear distinguish on how weight is assigned.
When you factor in accomplishment, you get why Shaq is so high, but if accomplishment even matters why are guys like OJ Mayo on the list?
Why is someone like Tracy McGrady on the list who has arguably accomplished nothing other than a few all star games and right now probably isn’t even that good?
About the only thing they got right is Kobe at #1 :)
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.
