Lebron Might Back Out of Dunk Contest

chosen_lebron_james
Personally I don't care.  That just means that it's a bigger chance for Shannon to win.  It would be nice to see Shannon go up against Kryptonate.   Little man vs Little man.

Here is part of the quitter's comments:

"I'm like 50-50 right now," he said Wednesday night before a game against Phoenix. "I don't know if you can get it back to the 80s and like in '98 when Vince (Carter) was in it.

Wasn’t Vince Carter in the 2000 dunk contest? and why does that matter with him doing it in 2010?

by Marty Mart on Dec 3, 2009 7:04 AM PST reply actions

Based on the article he is saying that it's become too much of a show

and less attention is paid on the contest so he wants the competition to be more old school. The ironic part is that it is he who is the traveling show with his tossing of the talcum powder and the photo taking rituals before games.

I’ll tell you something about the school that he should concentrate on a jump shot or a midrange game. Quitter!

I think smashing the Suns made me realize how far Kobe and the Lakers have come from five years ago, when the Suns had the world at their feet.

by PURPLE AND GOLD FOR LIFE on Dec 3, 2009 7:48 AM PST up reply actions

Still

Doesn’t add up since what is the dunk contest besides a show of athleticism. Its not like it supposed to be all serious or like it ever was. I remember folks doing cartwheels before dunks and stuff. All of the simplest dunks have been done there’s really nothing new to dunks except adding more to them.

by Marty Mart on Dec 3, 2009 10:55 AM PST up reply actions

Recently, dunk contests have become more of a show of creativity and catoring to the crowd

like with the whole superman thing and the kryptonate thing. Personally, I think they just need to ban Dwight Howard and everything will get back to normal.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

by Justin N. on Dec 3, 2009 11:50 AM PST up reply actions

I disagree

I think it adds more fun to the dunk competition. I mean think about how many dunks are left that they can do. I mean Vince Carter put his elbow on the rim. What else left is there. Nothing really. Jumping from the free throw line is about as far as we can get from the hoop to dunk thus far and people have already done that. Its not like people are in NBA 2K9 and can throw it off the jumbotron and stuff. Wouldn’t hurt to try, but I doubt it would even work.

by Marty Mart on Dec 3, 2009 6:09 PM PST up reply actions

Ewww

you serious? Do you think that before Vince Carter put his elbow in the rim, people were sitting around going “gee I wonder when someone is going to put his elbow through the rim?” No, people were thinking the same way you are: “Everything that can be done has been done”. I don’t think anybody has ever done a front flip, have they? The way shannon jumps though I totally believe he can.

Also, there’s plenty of room to improve on existing dunks. Vince Carter didn’t do the first 360 windmill, but his was so perfect and impressive it was one of the greatest dunks ever. Kobe Bryant’s double clutch wasn’t original either, but that didn’t make it any less incredible.

The props and gimmicks? Give me freakin’ break. I couldn’t disagree with you any more.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

Ok

I just think you can make a dunk contest entertaining and still be serious about the dunks. If Lebron came out with a cape with an L on it looking like freaking Zorro and then proceeded to do a 360 through the legs flawlessly people would be just as excited as Vince Carter’s 360 windmill.
I’ll give you the phone booth was a little much. Mainly because he took forever in there. But overall its a show. Its entertainment. Why can’t people have a sense of humor with what they’re doing. I came to see a show and if I had to watch Kobe’s dunk contest every year which had all of the dunks we now see on a regular basis, I’d be mad as hell. If you’re gonna do a plain dunk you might as well add some humor to it thats all I’m sayin.
And as for a front flip. You do realize that the person doing that would have to jump and flip above the rim so they could come down on it. Hangtime is one thing. But to jump and flip above the rim is practically impossible at this point. Its not out of the question entirely, but I haven’t even seen a street hooper with that much hops.

There’s possible stuff out there and given how NBA athleticism has evolved over the years, there’s no reason to think the possibilities will just continue to grow.

Were you entertained by Dwight Howard’s 11 foot rim dunk? He spent 10 minutes rolling out a new hoop only to 2 hand it through in remarkably dull fashion.

The day that the dunk contest becomes more about who can come up with the greatest costume or gimmick rather than pushing the limits of creative athleticism is the day it should be taken out of all-star weekend.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

by Justin N. on Dec 5, 2009 12:09 AM PST up reply actions

I just said

the phone booth thing was a bit much. At the end of the day, you think that humans will continue to progress fast enough that each year someone will jump higher, dunk harder. I’m being realistic in that we have seen huge amounts of material. That video you posted. He still isn’t getting high enough to possibly do a flip. The only clips of someone doing flips are people on trampolines. That and his dunks were nice but nothing I haven’t seen before. People have jumped over cars, over people, over people from the side. Its been done. Has it been done in the dunk contest no, but thats because if someone messes up jumping over a car their team is going to kill them for doing something so dangerous. I’m not saying they shouldn’t, just saying teams have vested interest in their players and them getting hurt in a dunk contest is not one of those interests.
Its not about the gimmicks. I was mad as hell when Dwight only did that simple old dunk. but at the end of the day who is the dunk contest for, the fans AND the player themselves. Every dunk shouldn’t have a gimmick, but if you can add fun to it I just say why not instead of why. Players deserve to have some fun too on the court.

by Marty Mart on Dec 5, 2009 12:44 AM PST up reply actions

I disagree

There have been several great, simple, and original dunks that have been done recently. Remember Iggy’s behind the backboard dunk? Or JR Smith’s behind the back windmill dunk? I still think we got jobbed when Josh Smith wasn’t able to finish his whole tape thing. Not every dunk needs a cape/phonebooth or a Steve Nash soccer pass.

by brianfbb on Dec 3, 2009 1:31 PM PST up reply actions

Number one reason he isnt going to do it:

If he loses, his endorsements go down. He has very little to gain from doing it.

Reason number 2:

Along the same lines of number 1, if he does it, he will lose to UPSSSS!!!

In Kobe we trust!

Lebron is a self-absorbed douche...

“…I don’t know if we can get it back…”

Yeah, you’re The Savior.

Dumb ass.

The NBA is intent on turning it into pre-determined, choreographed Big Time Wrestling…

You want a real contest? Open it to 10 guys and let fans vote via the internet.

The only person who’s gonna “get it back” to anything is David Stern, not Nike Boy.l

Yeah

I like the idea. Either that or texting it in. Or give everyone in attendance a little buzzer thing like they did on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire. Still I think showmanship adds something to it.

by Marty Mart on Dec 3, 2009 9:03 PM PST up reply actions

Lebron

Josh Smith
Andre Iguodala
Dwyane Wade
Dwight Howard
DeMar DeRozan
Nate Robinson
J-Rich
Rudy Gay
Shannon Brown

That’s my list!

by brianfbb on Dec 3, 2009 10:34 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t see Wade as an explosive dunker. And Dwight already said he’s out for this year. Didn’t Rudy Gay already do a dunk contest?

by Marty Mart on Dec 4, 2009 10:59 AM PST up reply actions

Wade is an explosive finisher, and also very creative with his drives. I’m sure he’d be a good contestant. And this would just be my dream list for the dunk contest, I know I won’t see them all. It would “bring back” the dunk contest though

by brianfbb on Dec 4, 2009 11:11 AM PST up reply actions

I don't get his comment about "what's going on around the dunks"

as in the media reports?

If he’s saying the contest is too much of a show…isn’t the entire ALL-STAR weekend basically a gigantic SHOW since…forever?

by Nostance on Dec 3, 2009 9:18 PM PST reply actions

no he means stuff like the phone booth, the super man outfit, the krypto nate outfit which, and the mini hoop.

prior to Dwight Howard, had no place in the contest.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

Stop whining and ball up, chosen one!

Either that, or quit like a little girl. What other people do has nothing to do with what you can bring. So stop hiding behind that as an excuse.

his tattoo just made me lose a little respect for him

I mean hasnt he heard of modesty? Didnt he say jordan was the greatest ever?

He's had that tattoo for forever

And that was the label attached to him while he was in high school. Can’t blame him that much.

Well you can't blame him for the title....

but you can certainly blame him for the tattoo.

Its not the title, only the tattoo

i just think its a bit much thats all.

What would be sadly funny is if he ends up not winning any championships

as long as he isn't a Laker

I would be happy.

i love lebron’s game, but what is up with his dancing on the sideline while his team is pounding the bulls. that is completely classless. he needs to grow up. joakim should have punched him right in the jaw.
