What's the possibility?

With all this talk about Shaq and Kobe and retiring their jerseys, I was wondering what the possibility would be of the Lakers retiring Derek Fisher's number?

He is no Shaq or Kobe, but the man has been an intrical part of every ring that Kobe has won in a Laker uniform. I seem to remember our "not-so-good" years after shaq left, we were fighting in the playoffs with guards like smuch parker & chucky atkins. As soon as Fish came back, we seemed to be more balanced and a much better competitor. And I see him being on the roster for a couple more years, with the possibility of winning more rings. He probably wont contribute as much as he has in the past, but the man can hit a clutch shot. He was the starting point guard for 4 of the lakers championships, with the possibility of 1, 2 or 3 more.

And do I even mention .4 seconds? Probably one of the greatest moments in Laker history.

Wondering what you all think about that?

if you retire fishers number then u retire horrys..

u only retire numbers of legends or else we are going to sstart needing jerseys like #143 because all the jerseys are gonna get retired..

by matthewmafa on Dec 22, 2009 1:34 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

very unlikely

he made clutch shots like robert horry, brian shaw, and etc and was a key contributor in the 3peat run along with last year but that just does not cut it when comes to retiring numbers.
Players like Magic and Kareem not only made huge contributions to the team and organization but they had a huge impact on the game itself. Retiring numbers is a very special honor otherwise like matthewmafa said, players would be wearing numbers like #143 and the honor would thus lose its significance.

my thoughts exactly

thats what i was thinking, just seeing what other opinions were?

I was so glad when he came back to the promised land. I was so tired of smush parker. I had the dust of my fisher jersey from the closet. He may never get his number retired, but that .4 second shot has to be in the top 10 of all time laker moments.

yeah

that .4 shot goes down for ever in laker history
funny as hell to hear 19,000 people in San Antonio collectively gasp in shock and the lakers run to the locker room…hehe

On other teams you may have a point,

but on the Lakers it takes a truly legendary career to be put up there. Derek Fisher had a solid career and was a contributer to some great Laker teams, but is not a Hall of Fame player and more of a roll player. I think D Fish will be remembered for his contributions, but MVP’s hang in the rafters of Staples Center (on the Purple & Gold side anyways).

Retired Lakers #'s

Wilt, West, Goodrich (who I don’t know much about), Magic, Kareem, Worthy, ad Baylor
Kobe, Shaq, and (in my opinion) Gasol should get their #‘s retired. I feel that getting your # retired is a very elusive accomplishment and if Fish was to join the club, so would Shaw and Horry. The thing is, all those seven guys and the 3 guys that sold get their #’s retired are in/will be in the hall of fame. Other teams have the jerseys of guys I’ve never heard of but the Lakers are a historic franchise and therefore: As much as I like and admire him, No, his # should not be retired .

wow

The Orlando Magic have retired “the fans” (#6) as their only number retired. It seems like the Celtics retire just about everyone’s number. It’s also good to see the Clippers haven’t even tried, maybe they can retire the “Laker Fans” for ensuring their arena is filled up at least twice a year, j/k.

Gasol is borderline right now

But he does seem to be on his way.

One more ring, and he will be in solid consideration.

Two more, and he’s in fo sho.

I would rank the 2 3s in Orlando higher than .4

I know, blasphemy, but the end result to the 2009 series was so much better than the 2004 series :)

And I would like to have Fish’s jersey retired here. It’s been a good ten odd years of Fish being a Laker and he’s made some big shots. He hasn’t made mind blowing career stats in LA, but he’s been a solid LA figure and has brought a lot of glory to LA these ten years.

Fish isn’t a superstar or an all-star, but he’s apart of the LA franchise like Coop, Byron Scott, Kurt Rambis, etc and if those fellas can’t get their jerseys retired, then I find it hard pressed that the Laker front office would retire Fish’s.

Speaking of retiring jerseys, how has Gary Payton's jersey not been retired in Seattle/Oklahoma?

so then do you think Kemp's jersey deserves to also be retired?

Celtics Fan here.

Good discussion. Even though I have a Strong Natural “Dislike” for Purple and Gold as a nearly 30 yr Celtics Fan, I have always liked Derrick Fisher. He somewhat reminds me of our Ray Allen.

It would be a good gesture to retire his jersey.

What did I do to you? : )

just kidding. Saw your 2nd sentence and did a double take.

Even though I have a Strong Natural "Dislike" for Purple and Gold

Anyways, here is my argument. He has been the starting PG for the last 4 titles and has been a huge contributor not only defensively and scoring but in the clutch. Not to many players, besides Horry, who you can say that about for the last 4 titles. So yes! retire his jersey.

what if

the lakers organization created some sort of way to honor the other great players who might not fit into the category of Future HOF. Perhaps they could create some sort of Purple & Gold Honor Plaque outside the Staples center with the names of other Lakers greats. That way we have another way of honoring those who might not necessarily deserve a retired number but definitely deserve to be recognized as part of the great Laker history and tradition. Or possibly a “ring” of honor…just thinking

Heres a new mix I made.

Kobe hasnt always been known as a clutch player. In game 5 of the 1997 Eastern Conference Semifinals, he missed a shot to win the game in the 4th quarter and 2 three-pointers to tie the game in the last minute of overtime, all of the shots being airballs. With that the Utah Jazz ended the playoffs for the Lakers in the 2nd round. Shaquille O'Neal commented years later that "Kobe was the only guy who had the guts at the time to take shots like that."

Ever since that horrible experience in his rookie year, Kobe has worked harder and has learned how to make those shots with the game on the line. This vid features some lines from Carmelo Anthony's Become Legendary commercial as well as some of Kobe's recent gamewinners.

Enjoy!
Kobe Game Winner vs Raptors - Whoa, I watched this and then I read the comments on Youtube claiming Kobe travelled, which I had not heard of. Then, after watching a few times, I have to say, I agree, Kobe changes his pivot foot before putting the ball down on the floor. I also think there's no way a ref catches that in real time, and even if they do, they can't be sure enough to call it then, either.
