Cheers, From CelticsBlog

Larry-bird-magic-johnson-singed-retirement-8x10_medium

I just wanted to open up a conversation with you guys to hopefully generate a good relationship between our fan bases.  I know that we hate each other's teams and I know the stereotypes that many associate with Boston fans.  But I also know Laker fans that I like a lot and I think if you give us a shot, you'll appreciate many Boston fans.

Of course this message isn't necessary for the classiest Laker fans and will fall on deaf ears for the worst of them (same for C's fans I'm afraid).  But here's hoping that we can generate some good will between our fan bases (and in particular our websites) by reaching out and giving respect.

We have two of the elite teams in the league and we have the last two Championships.  This is how it should be!  As the picture indicates -  if Larry and Magic can do it, so can we.

Take care and best of luck this season.  I hope we meet in the Finals again.

I don't hate Bostonians

I hate who you represent. It’s not you it’s your team. I hope that this whole building relationships works whatever that means. I also hope Jeff that by you posting this you will hear out what we have to say and comment on it as well. You are more than welcomed to ask you Celtic fans to join in. My biggest gripe with your site is not your team as much as how it is managed in regards to banning.

plain and simple your site with it’s quick banning attitude promotes a not welcomed unless you kiss our ass attitude. Which would be fine but the rules that someone is required to participate are stricly enforced but only for non Celtic fans. At the same time Celtic fans are allowed to talk about topics and curse their butts off. At the same time I dislike the attitude and the surprise by your fans when someone from another team posts on your site. They take this highand mighty attitude as if SB nation is solely here for the purpose of Celtic fans but it isn’t. By the way, that excuse of “we don’t come here after the Lakers loose” is a cop-out. You CHOOSE not to come here. You might be surprised at the quality of basketball that is being talked here with or without insults and talks about rape or court cases.

So, I hope that from time to time you do come here and join our chat because SSR will welcome you with open arms. I know I will even though you banned me. No hard feelings. You will see that the fans here will not react to you the way Celtic fans react to us going over there.

you don't see everything we do

I didn’t see the comments till this morning – so many of the Celtics fan’s disrespectful comments were hidden and warned – you won’t find the rape comments on our site anymore (and if you do it is because I didn’t see them yet)

wondahbap is a frequent and welcome poster on our site – are you saying that he’s kissing our butts? really? he shows respect without compromising his opinions/fandom

I don't see what he posts over there so I have no idea

what is acceptable or isnt’. Like I said, I can’t participate but I’m fully aware of how you run your site. One thing I can tell you is that people walk on egg shells because unlike SSR your site is the most micro-managed site I have seen. But hey I must say, I admire the fact that you are here having a discussion.

At the same time, don’t put words in my mouth by asking me if I am saying that wondabap is kissing your butts. This isn’t the Celtic blog where you can just blurt out things like that.

That would be interesting. Probably a bad idea in retrospect.

My personal experience with CelticsBlog has been positive.

Way before SSnR was started (just so you know there isn’t a blogger bias). I never had a problem. I even said PP didn;t deserve to have his number retired before 2008 Finals. Not even warned. Delivery and timing are key.

I became a member of SBNation because of CelticsBlog. They do a good job. I joined to debate something I disagreed with, but I was also respectful. Unless it was “TheAncientRivalry” So sometimes, i don’t understand how people get banned unless they cross a line. Is CelticsBlog’s line easier to cross than some other blogs? Maybe, but who cares to visit a Cavs, Pistons or Spurs blog? We are their biggest rivals. If you try to get into pissing contests, expect to lose when at a Celtics blog.

Well, I am sure you have had good experiences.....

But if you are treated well and everyone else is treated poorly does that make you the rule or the exception?

I suppose if New York is the center of the sarcasm universe (figure that one out on your own) I guess it stands to reason that Boston fans wouldn’t appreciate it.

Anyone else notice that Jeff Green went from a semi-nice guy trying to open a dialogue between our two fan bases to being a typical Celtics Blog douche?

I am sure you do, but I think the tolerance level of Celtic Fans is totally different than the tolerance level of Laker fans.

Like I said I got a warning for saying the word “jesus”. I doubt any Celtic fan would get that warning. However like Purple and Gold said, I appreciate your coming here and opening up a dialogue. There are a lot of great contributors to both sites unfortunately it gets ruined by a few a-holes that just want to start trouble.

I think there's another point

And that’s that it’s happening in the first place. I mean, I’m not the one that does most of the moderating around here … but then, I don’t know if anyone does much moderating at all. There’s no need for it.

Bringing up something like former rape allegations is something you just won’t hear around here (and I don’t mean that specifically, I mean things like that). On the other hand, that entire mentality and approach seems to be something you’re going to get a healthy dose of if you go to CelticsBlog. Yeah, you guys might eventually find and moderate those comments — but (a) it’s the kind of thing I just haven’t really seen around here, and (b) if it did, whichever Lakers fan did it would get one warning, and if that kind of stuff continued, he’d be banned from our site, Laker fan or not. And I definitely don’t get that sense at CelticsBlog.

I think the point these guys are trying to make is this: they’ve gotten warned or banned for tiny things (and they’re far from the only ones to have such stories), but the Celtics fans that say much more reproachable things just get their comments hidden. That disparity is troublesome.

It’s hard to cultivate an atmosphere of respect without a context of equal treatment.

Well said.

Couple of points:

  • if he really meant it seems like he could un-ban some of the many people they have banned (but somehow have posted numerous comments on other blogs without a problem).
  • I don’t bother with the Celtics or Blazer blogs because I don’t like having to worry about getting banned without even a warning. For example: saying something like “I see Rasheed is up to his old tricks again and arguing with the refs.” surely is not a complement and likely to get you banned in Celtic-ville. Few other SBN blogs are that sensitive (not Rockets, Spurs, Suns, Magic, Nuggets). Just not worth the bother.
  • Besides, my feelings about the Celtics make the chances of me saying something nice very small.

by altree on Dec 20, 2009 12:08 AM PST up reply actions

I agree with you Jeff

It is pretty “convenient” that a lot of Laker’s bloggers show up on the celtics blog to have some “intelligent discussions” right after the Celtic’s first loss in weeks.

Personally I read the blog occasionally when I’m bored, and I also will comment occasionally. That post you wrote where you gave out fake awards and had a bit about KG being on family guy was hilarious (dunno WHO exactly wrote it). My comments are usually made in reflection to the article I’m commenting on. They’re not designed to ‘stimulate discussion’ with other members.

Quite frankly, I think it’s pointless to go over to Celtics blog and try to defend Kobe, the Lakers, or anything else. What happens when a Celtics fan comes here to defend Paul Pierce for his game 1 2008 finals display? He gets ripped a new one. It’s one thing to have conflicting opinions and a freedom of speech thing, but it’s another thing to bring up opinions and discussions when you KNOW they will fall on deaf ears and you KNOW they will get many people more mad than intellectual.

Just my two cents.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

there shall be no peace between the two teams, or fan bases. It just isnt natural. I will make peace with celtics fans when there is peace in the middle east.

joking aside….i dont think this post was necessary. Most Lakers and Celtics fans are still going to abhor the other team, and if they didn’t they just wouldnt be that good of fans haha. I think its just important to remember we are all human beings, and everyone should be treated with respect……despite celtics fans poor taste in basketball teams : )

I still have a grudge against him and his site for banning me but I know how to get my point accross because believe me I cannot stand them. It has more to do with their moderator’s bias and banning of non Celtic fans while they are the ones spewing insults. I pretty sure that most regular visitors to SSR hate them but it is more about how they manage their site. At least to me it is.

Thanks for reaching out Jeff, I fully agree. I think fandom has become so relative that people cannot distinguish “hate” and “sports hate.” In my honest opinion I think people use sports fanaticism as an excuse to be immature. Don’t get me wrong, I bleed purple and gold and hate green as much as the rest of them, but people need to enjoy their teams as well as the basketball they play, and not use the sports world as a form of escapism to the point where we can no longer relate as people.

Sorry for the tangent, but anyhow I hope to see the C’s in the Final as well.

Cheers.

Celtics-Lakers fans had a much better relationship

When the two teams weren’t competing for titles… I couldn’t stand Celtics fans in the 80s, as we were always going head to head. Now it’s the next millennium and we’re at it again! The same arguments are spit out by Celtics fans, like Lakers have no heart, aren’t physical enough, etc. Who exactly on the Celtics is physical? KG? Pierce? Maybe that guy that played high-school football… okay yeah him. :)

Also, I’ve never liked Kevin Garnett, Rasheed Wallace, Ray Allen, or your pouty center. Since 2008 I’ve also had a healthy dose of hate for Paul Pierce, House, and that funky White-Chocolate-thunder-redhead. I just don’t like them, and don’t want to go into why as it would take too long! :)

So thanks for the post, I’ve never been into personal attacks, but then again, I don’t visit where I know I’m not welcome.

doesn’t mean I feel the need to be nasty to a Laker fan about it, that’s pointless

Granted

our 2 teams are never going to agree on things (2 very different franchises) over the last year and a half i have respected the celtics (dont like any of the players they have) but something has to be said about success (even if you play in the weak east JK).

im one of the biggest haters i know and i HATE the city of Boston for so so so many reason (step dad from there,Pats (Tuck Rule),and the red sox can go eat “a big one”) and for me to respect the celtics is HUGE.

maybe our fan bases can sit back and watch some good basketball but i doubt it, i know that i for one will be yelling boston sucks very soon

perspective

I don’t think it was hurt feelings so much as it was a bit of embarrassment. I just learned how easy it is to get pulled into a conversation that makes you act a little defensive and childish than you might think yourself capable of – especially when “behind enemy lines” so to speak.

The upshot is that I will try to be unbiased from now on in terms of how I treat non-Celtics fans when they visit the site. Fair enough?

artest came out in his interview with SI a couple of weeks ago. u shoul dknow that unless you’ve been living under a rock in cali somewhere. he also admitted to wanting to fight big ben every time he sees the man.
then a post came out which laker fans decided to discuss who would win a team fight between cees and lakes. it was pretty fascinating how much violent stuff this blog allowed before finally closing the post. it was just ridiculous so i thought to mention that fact that shows what this blog tolerates.

celtsgofor8in

I guess we should put some validity behind your opinion of how “violent stuff” is discussed here because of your extensive experience and how long you have been posting on SSR. Look no on here will make you feel unwelcomed but please come with originality. The most hipocrital topic that Celtic fans talk about is Artest and at the same time your team has the most volatile player in the NBA in Sheed. But as you said, it’s surprising how much your team hated him and called him a punk and how you guys call his antics “passion” or “heart”. That’s similar to your fans talking about Sasha crying in the Finals but at the same time you have big baby crying because Perkins and KG yelled at him. And since we are on the topic of KG and violence I suggest you go on Youtube and type in “KG is the Vanilla Ice of the NBA” and you come back here and talk about violence. You are welcomed here but please come with some originilatiy and a cohesive sentence because unlike the Celtic Blog, we don’t use words like “cees” and “lakes” Have some respect and refer to this team as the Lakers. Not even SSR Laker fans are allowed to refer to other teams by anything other than their original names. Thank you! Tell Jeff Clark I said hello.

I agree with everything Purple said other than maybe the name calling since those seem like shortened versions more than offensive nicknames. However the stuff about KG and Sheed are right on. Anyways, back to our conversation. You completely mis-understood what I was saying. Right over your head. I’ll try to keep it shorter so you don’t get too confused. My comment had nothing to do with being a “smarter fan” or being “ignorant”. I re-read my post and didn’t see what gave you that impression. It had nothing to do NBA knowledge in general. It had to do with your comment about this site. And I quote:

it was pretty fascinating how much violent stuff this blog allowed

So, what I was question is your comment and why or how you would know something like that since are not on this site long enough to make that conclusion about THIS SITE! Get it?

Do you even have a clue what you are talking about? Seriously.

That post that you keep referencing above has nothing to do with any violence. The comments were deleted by the moderator because of an inappropriate comment that I made about something that had nothing to do with violence.

Yeah some comments were deleted, but if you got a chance to read them you would feel like an idiot when you found out what they were about. I am not going to repeat it because it obviously offended someone around here, but trust me it had nothing to do with violence. Actually in reality it was probably the polar opposite of violence.

Maybe you should stop making ridiculous assumptions and actually comment on what you have read with your own two eyes.

You know since you apparently know so much that our heads would explode.

Billy Mac: "Lamar, can you see yourself actually getting in the (boxing) ring"?
Lamar Odom: "No. My face is too pretty."

ridiculous?

yeah sure buddy. it’s okay. i can understand you wanting to defend your prescious lakers site but lets not be so blind to the fact. there were more than a few comments deleted from that post and you can say what you want. I read them with my own 2 eyes thank you very much and it was a nice discussion on artest can ko kg or pp. or who artest can take on in a fight. ron vs. pierce. ron vs. kg then it just escalated to celts vs. lakers. non violent. i guess it depends on perception. in my perception that is violence. period. is your head exploding yet??

by celtsgofor8in on Dec 22, 2009 11:16 AM PST up reply actions

When you learn to spell, use capital letters, and punctuate, I will start to believe you are smarter than everyone around here. As far as what was deleted or not deleted, I was the one who got his comments deleted so I am pretty sure I have a better understanding of the situation.

When KG actually starts a fight with someone his own size then you can start talking. As long as your favorite player is a wuss who only fights guards, I don’t think you have much of a leg to stand on.

BTW, I know I asked you this before but what are the Celtics going for 8 in anyway?

Time to bust some heads

You guys are really giving the “long leash before ban” thing a workout, aren’t you?

celts – If you have a problem with our site’s content, you don’t need to be here. We don’t give a crap what you think of it, your judgments are irrelevant. I do remember comments about whether Ron Artest could take PP or KG, but I can guarantee that if they were deleted, it was because they were innocent bystanders in a conversation that was removed because of a mildly offensive comment that did not have anything to do with. If you were offended by that conversation’s “violent” content, by all means go back to where your sensibilities are not threatened, because anybody here would consider that talk completely harmless. Get started on basketball topics or you will be removed.

PS – plenty of personal attacks in there, you know damn well you aren’t following the site’s rules right now. You love living on the line between OK and not OK, so get back to that, because right now you are way over it.

PAGFL – What happened man? You used to be peacekeeper #1 around here explaining to trolls how to behave with patience that even I didn’t have. Then, you get into one heated conversation with J. Clark, and now you are exploding all over the next idiot that comes in and says something that doesn’t make sense? I don’t care how much you hate the Celtics or their fans, chill out.

This conversation is over. Start arguing about shit that people might care about.

I’m a lover not a fighter. Actually, I’m pretty cool. Not really heated. I completely understand. But, in a way if you don’t mind me saying, it would help if you see someone making such a comment if you put a stop to it by telling the troll to chill out first. Belive me, now that you asked me to cool it I will. But like I said, please try to intervene first at least that would give me a sign to not comment. Or at least delete the comment made by the troll to avoid all of this. Just my opinion.

If that is way over the line then the line has moved quite a bit. I would ask that everyone lay off Jeff for the time being. That conversation clearly ended up in a place that he wasn’t proud of, and he’s made his peace with us. That should be good enough.

He doesn’t owe us an explanation of how he runs his site. The very fact that he has indicated a willingness to try to see things from both sides shows that the issue is not falling on deaf ears, and it shows that Jeff is a pretty decent guy, despite his team affiliation =)

Over on Blog a Bull,

we call the team the “Cows” when they play badly.

Not even SSR Laker fans are allowed to refer to other teams by anything other than their original names.

Of course, there are many non-offensive team name abbreviations used, i.e. Knicks, Sixers, Blazers and Wolves.

I notice that

Just the other day when the team lost to Sacramento was the first time I have seen that name. It’s simple but makes so much sense in the way that Bulls fans get so frustrated. My quote above that you posted is referring to SSR’s moderators looking down on us if we refer to opposing team’s names with anything else besides the original name. Example…Fakers! I get it because we don’t want to seem like the rest of the sites on here who applaud that. But my example didn’t apply according to what I was told. But my quote is still correct. That is looked down upon.

btw.. last year I think the Celtics and Bulls played the best series in all of the playoffs. I don’t think I have ever witnessed more overtimes and buzzer beaters in one series. Anyways, eventhough the team lost Gordon I felt that with Deng coming back it was going to be huge. What do you think happened from last year to this year? Wasn’t VDN the coach last year also? Since you are a fan i’m curious as to why you think the team is playing different than last year?

by PURPLE AND GOLD FOR LIFE on Dec 23, 2009 7:04 AM PST up reply actions

Salmons and HInrich have been shooting terribly from outside,

and Deng hardly ever takes 3’s, so without Gordon there has been no spacing on the floor. To compound that, Rose until the last few games was hobbled by a bad ankle that limited his ability to drive to the hoop.

On the other side of the ball, the Bulls really miss Tyrus Thomas’ shot blocking and help defense. Taj Gibson will have a career as a decent 4 off the bench, but is over-matched against starters – you likely saw how Gasol had his way against Taj.

I see the Bulls just like the Blazers in terms of youth and promise. Imagine if Kobe had actually got his wish and got traded to the Bulls? But, the Bulls didn’t want to give up Deng, at least from the rumors I read in the past.

As I posted here in my trade proposal, PJ would find a way to utilize TT’s abilities much more than has happened in Chicago.

Bulls don't do player development.

If TT is not traded, Reinsdorf will likely let him walk, so you guys should trade for him while you have the chance.

If the Bulls don’t improve, Rose may take the qualifying offer for 2011-2012 so he can leave as a free agent – you can probably get him then as a successor to Kobe.

That would be great to have those two, but don’t give up on your team just like that. Your team has a lot of future stars, your team just need to find a coach that this team will follow and Rose has to step up be the leader. I know his young but he is the future of the bulls, when he plays great your team rolls. Don’t forget what he did at the playoffs. Just be patient like how we Laker fans waited, I still can’t forget how Kobe wanted out but now everything is great.

I wish the Lakers and Celtic play each other each month so even if either one of them cough (celtic) don’t reach the finals we get to see them play bunch of games. Anyways good luck on you guys game against magic, i will probably want magic to win just cause i think Howard is awesome.

Thanks People for the warm welcome

Yeah I agree Raindropz24….that would be awesome for us to play each other at least once a month. It’s been at least 20 or so years since the Both Lakers and Celtics were top teams.

So you really think that ORL or CLE will keep us from the Finals? They are both great teams, I’ll give you that. ATL is a sleeper, too.

But if the Celtics do what they are supposed to do, I like our chances against Any team.

And if anyone here hasn’t heard the news, Paul Pierce won’t be playing for next few games. Evidently he is having a procedure done to remove some fluid from his knee, nothing major. He’ll miss our next few games. Just visit Celtics Blog.

But if I was ORL I wouldn’t sleep on us. And yes Pierce will be ready for Jan31, so in a way I’m glad he’s getting this done now rather than later.

As far as Orl and Cle

I will save my opinion until after the trade deadline. That Cavs are eager to anything to improve their chances of Keeping Lebron. But with todays’ teams I think Orlando will be the tougher one simply because of the height matchup. To much is made of Shaq. He isn’t what the Cavs needed to put them over the Celts. ATL will be very tough also.

I just read about PP. Nothing major. Depending on how the standings are and how well the team does without him. The Lakers missed Pau for quite some time and they did pretty good. If the Celts don’t do good without PP it could effect the standings some what.

hehehe

I still think the top dog on the east is your Celtic, i was jokingly saying you guys won’t reach the finals. But i think the team that could stop you guys i would say either Orlando or Atlanta. Magic are still improving trying to find ways to balance out their offense, while Atlanta if their chemistry stays that way they would be really good.

What fucking BS

You have no discourse on your site unless you are ra ra ra.

Your blog is more censored than the Chinese times.

Leave the kool aid drinking to your own site and stop trying to hold on to greatness by hanging around ours. Your days as our #1 foe are rapidly fading.
