Lakers-Hornets Open Thread

New Orleans Hornets at Los Angeles Lakers, Dec 1, 2009 7:30 PM PST

hornetslakers01

What up, sexy commenters? Game time approacheth. Here are some roster updates, news nuggets and items of possible historical interest to get you ready.

  • Peja Stojakovic won't play tonight, as he continues to deal with family matters.
  • Today is World AIDS Day, in observance of which Kobe Bryant will wear red shoelaces.
  • On UCLA's 2006 Final Four team, Jordan Farmar was the starting point guard, and Darren Collison was his backup.
  • The Phoenix Suns got housed by the Knicks tonight, so with a win the Lakers take over the NBA's best record.
  • The Hornets were the franchise that drafted Kobe out of high school, but promptly traded him to the Lakers for Vlade Divac. Hee hee! Fun times.

Everybody in the house say yeah!

The Sons of Steve Nash got absolutely pasted by

the Knicks of D’Antoni.

Good times are here! We can crush the bees and take over the top spot in the Pacific and NBA too (I think).

A win tonight gives us a 1/2 game over the Suns, Celtics, and Magic.

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be commited against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the LimeLight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.

i'm not surprised at all

Teams that are losing take the “this game would be great for our confidence” attitude. i’m used to it. The Lakers will settle down and pull this out in the end. As long as the refs don’t take them out of the game.

we would be doing well

but Bynum is killing us on defense

by desecrator09 on Dec 1, 2009 8:03 PM PST up reply actions

It isn’t just Bynum. Lamar/Pau have been underwhelming on defense and Collison is blowing by Fisher.

by intuitive on Dec 1, 2009 8:03 PM PST up reply actions

yes really

hes been bad on pick and roll and hes not challenging shots.

by desecrator09 on Dec 1, 2009 8:06 PM PST up reply actions

I told you Pau, Lamar, and Fisher have been underwhelming on defense too. It’s not all Bynum, and I’m not saying he’s been great, its just that others haven’t contributed on the defensive end thus far in the game either so it’s harsh to just say Bynum this Bynum that.

by intuitive on Dec 1, 2009 8:09 PM PST up reply actions

The others havent been too good either

but all i was sayin is that most of the breakdowns we had were off of pick and rolls where BYNUM was involved. And their shots at the basket were all over Bynum and he didnt even try to contest them.

by desecrator09 on Dec 1, 2009 8:10 PM PST up reply actions

You don’t contest high floaters and jumpers. It’s not his job to contest jumpers unless they’re near the paint. He can’t do everything on defense. Last I checked he was contesting them, the only problem was that he was allowing Okafor such good position by the time he contested the shot had already gone in. Hardly all his fault for the defensive miscues though.

by intuitive on Dec 1, 2009 8:13 PM PST up reply actions

but hes been slow reacting to the pick and roll

Im not backing down from that. Ive been watching him in particular on defense and its mostly been on him

by desecrator09 on Dec 1, 2009 8:15 PM PST up reply actions

I’ve been watching him and his defense isn’t great, but it’s hardly all on him. That’s all I’m saying. Defense is all about playing defense well AS A TEAM.

You have to take into account that Oden is a 25 minutes a game guy.

Oden’s last 5 games:

November 21 vs Timberwolves – Greg Oden 2 fouls
November 23 vs Bulls – Greg Oden 4 fouls
November 25 vs Nets – Greg Oden 5 fouls
November 28 vs Grizz – Greg Oden 4 fouls
November 29 vs Utah – Greg Oden: 5 fouls

Hardly waht I call staying out of foul trouble.

That's incorrect. And he's an aggressive defensive guy, so it will never be correct, in my opinion.

I know there’s nothing bad about him picking up fouls. He’s very defense oriented which is why he picks up more fouls than Bynum. That’s my point.

desecrator09 says he’s watched the Trailblazers and that Oden hasn’t been in foul trouble. Instead he says Nate just likes to play Pryz over Oden which is definitely not the case.

The way the refs call fouls, if you are gonna play aggressive defense, you're going to get whistled...

Just caught up to live on the DVR

A few random observations

  • Stu referred to the Hornets’ PF/C as “Emekafor”
  • Kobe has a wily trick to slow down the opponent: after a Lakers made basket, he will sometimes catch the ball coming out of the net and throw it to the ref. The ref will then throw it to the inbounder, costing them precious seconds on the break. This should be a delay of game, but it’s rarely called, because Kobe is “just” throwing it to the ref. If I were the opposing coach, I would mention this before every Laker game, it might be good for at least one delay of game call.
  • Kobe straight shoved Devin Brown to the ground with two hands. The ref on the baseline should have called that one, but he was probably watching the shot. That’s why Brown fouled Kobe hard a few plays later.
  • Okafor has a putback where he pushes the ball on the rim, then grabs the rim and pulls down, so that along with the momentum of the pushed ball, it goes in for two. That’s gotta be illegal.
  • Stu shows again how observant and objective he is – while Kobe and I cry for a Collison foul on a Kobe fastbreak layup, Stu says that actually Kobe traveled before the foul – and the slo mo replay shows he’s right.

Another gambler's delight

You feel great about your Lakers 131/2 or 14 1/2 point spread … and then you feel nauseated.

Just throwing this out there, but...

…I love gambling, but I can’t see myself ever throwing money on a Laker game.

I'd only do it if the game were close to a pick em

Picking the Lakers when they have a 10 point spread is just asking for misery. Either way you bet.

The play of the bench has me deeply disturbed

this shoulda been a blowout win over the bees instead it looks respectable

This looks terrible

Phil should force the bench to watch this over and over

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be commited against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the LimeLight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.

you’d never see this lineup out there in a close game or in the playoffs.

that was just sad and pathetic, I’m glad Farmer blocked that shot, take that Hornets next time, have the lead or play a better game to take the tacos away

He might end up really, really good as a defensive center.

I don’t think he’s coordinated enough to be a big scorer, but I could be wrong. Figure 12-14 ppg.

good win but

its sad that we’ve been losing the fourth quarters.

by Madz on Dec 1, 2009 10:12 PM PST reply actions

really though

consider this:

The Lakers have arguably the best 6 man rotation in the league. Although they pay more than everybody, they simply can’t be better than everyone 1-12 with that kind of dominance at the top. Our low end players like Mbenga Morrison and Powell are simply below average NBA talent and Vujacic is playing like it too despite the fact that he gets paid well above average.

Join that with some other factors: The garbage time unit hardly plays together, even in practice. Also, garbage time is exactly that: garbage time. In this game in particular, there was simply no chance of the hornets really coming back seeing as they were down at 5:30 by 19 and that’s when the bench really started to go lax. Sure they can get chewed out by the team and coach, but really if the opponents are fired up as the Hornets were towards the end of the game, the Laker garbage unit has a tremendous psychological disadvantage.

Losing the fourth quarter isn’t great, but this wasn’t an example of the worst of them. It’s not like we gave up a 20 point advantage whittled down to 8 by the 7 minute mark such as the case was with Atlanta.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.
