Lakers-Pistons Game Thread

Detroit Pistons at Los Angeles Lakers, Nov 17, 2009 7:30 PM PST

Laker newsage in brief from the day gone by:

  • Pau Gasol practiced today and says he might play Thursday against Chicago. He didn't say it's likely, mind you - just possible.
  • Kobe Bryant practiced today as well, "with no complications" in relation to his groinal area.
  • The Lakers have contacted the agent of Tony Gaffney, whom they cut this past training camp, about the possibility of bringing him back to the team. (H/T Inside Hoops.) Gaffney is a 6'8" forward from UMass who's playing in Israel right now.

Here's your open thread - make sure you stretch out thoroughly before commenting. I don't want anyone pulling a muscle in here.

Nice to hear about Gasol

but I’m sick of all the changes. It seems like every other day, there’s a new date set for his return.

Also I have a goal: To not complain about the refs calls once until playoff time when it really matters

I would join you on that goal but I wouldn't be able to keep it going, especially with the calls refs

sometime call but good luck with that goal…LOL

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be commited against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the LimeLight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.

If there's anything that will be an advantage tonight

It’s that Detroit is one of the few teams in the league that has a worse defensive rebounding rate than us, and our offensive rebounding is good.

more than Bryant tonigt? Seriously, who do the Pistons have that can guard him?

Ben Wallace defending Bynum is a lot harder than Kobe against the short Pistons guards’

see the upper right of the “scoreboard” box (which is in the lower right of the page)

It’s not on the board yet for some reason, maybe uncertain injury statuses?

Is that three-guard lineup

A temporary thing to jumpstart the offense or is McMillan seriously using it as a long-term thing? There’s quite a few teams (Atlanta one of them) in which that will always create a fairly glaring mismatch.

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

by Ben R on Nov 17, 2009 9:27 PM PST up reply actions

It's a lineup that is 6-1 so far, and should have been 7-0....

Everyone assumes Blake will end up going to the bench, but Travis Outlaw got hurt and so there’s pressure on the SF position now (Nic Batum also hurt).

Roy is 6’6" and can play SF without too many mismatch issues.

So it will be around for a while, probably — but it will go away as soon as Nic is ready, if not sooner.

Haha, Kobe on how his post play will adjust to Pau's return

From J.A. Adande’s article in ESPN’s Daily Dime.

Link: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/dailydime?page=dime-091117

Before the game Jackson expressed his desire for Kobe to let the rest of his team get involved; you know perhaps get Ron Artest accustomed to the full offense. It’s been Bryant on one side, Andrew Bynum on the other side, and that’s about it.

I can just imagine how that convo went …

Phil: Kobe, how about we spread it around a little bit?

Kobe: Ummm, yeah. I’m going to have to get back to you on that.

And even a possible return of Pau Gasol from a hamstring injury Thursday night won’t deter Bryant from occupying the post.

“Noooooo, not at all,” Bryant said.

“When you talk to Pau, ask him who won our one-on-one post game. I’ll give you a hint: it wasn’t him.”

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
