Lakers-Rockets Open Thread
Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Lakers, Nov 15, 2009 6:30 PM PST
Welcome to Ariza Bowl II.
Let's all raise a glass tonight for our old friend Trevor, who'll get his championship ring before the game. He was a distinguished soldier for us last year and will always have a place in Laker history. Aw, man... I told myself I wouldn't cry! Give me a moment here.
No such goodwill extends to the hated Luis Scola. That guy's a tool.
Open thread, ENGAGE.

just a little update
Pats lead the Colts 17-7 with 11 min in the second quarter
They're showing an Ariza highlight reel at Staples.
Nice gesture. But is that Radiohead they’re playing?
Standing O for Trevor
Kobe and Fish present the ring. Trevor has his little boy out there with him. I’m weeping.
Whew, I expect Ron to try to do too much today

FEED BYNUM!!!
they should give the ball to him everytime down the floor, hes has a huge advantage on Hayes
Hold on, I'm late but did I miss something
I turned the game on and saw a red shoe on the floor of Ariza’s, did a fan take his shoe and then threw it on the floor(LOL) and whats with the Lakers starting hot then going cold, Kobe having trouble with Ariza, I can’t believe it and Kobe should drive the ball on Ariza’s skinny behind..
There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be commited against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the LimeLight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.
Somebody forgot to tell the starters
that they are supposed to leave the double digit lead for the bench to lose.

im kinda opposed to that kinda trade
whether its lebron or CP3
seems very imperialistic and it will spark more hate
Leave Chad Billingsley alone!!!
Kobe and CP3 yes
Because CP3 has a really diversified game (three-point range, awesome midrange game, superb teardrop, can finish, and pass) and can work without the ball in his hands all the time. LeBron can’t operate too long without the ball more or less for extended periods.

Lakers are doing a very poor job of exploiting size mismatches down low. Too many jumpers.
Kobe needs to get more aggressive driving the ball also…

Kobe’s been very aggresive going to the basket, he’s just been unable to finish.
He’s taken a lot of jumpers, but he’s also missed a ton of close layups he normally makes.

You know that one commercial that ends with Kobe working out … his black T-shirt has “ANTICIPATION” on the front and it goes “Where ANTICIPATION happens”.
Well replace anticipation with frustration.
I’m sorry, just gonna say it: “Houston sucks ass”. We should be destroying them. No Yao, no T-mac, no size… How many points are we going to give to that 29 year old rookie, White-Chocolate Thunder aka Budinger? How many times we going to sit back on defense and watch them get easy points?
Oh well.
LOL understandable and I agree

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. If by being half a dozen points behind you mean "too close," then I agree with you....

Notice anything about all those Brooks made jumpers? He’s wide open! Fisher is leaving him to double other guys. He fails to realize Brooks is the only reason why the Rockets are still in this game.

phil is an idiot for leaving him in
in the playoffs he absolutely torched fish
Leave Chad Billingsley alone!!!
Only Phil, he has to be unique cause
any other coach would of taken Fish out, LONG time ago

Please explain
Why Fish has more shot attempts than Bynum when Bynum’s cover is a soft Euro PF?

thank you
Everytime Bynum gets the ball it’s a sure made basket.

Because Fisher brings the ball up, and therefore can shoot whenever he wants whereas people actually have to get the ball to Bynum in order for him to take a shot
Puppies, you say?

It’s the whole team. No drives, no intensity, no interior defense. The loss of Gasol is just intensifying how poorly the Lakers are right now.

Our unwillingness to give it to Bynum
Is just amazing. It’s like how we played keepaway from Gasol the entire playoffs last year, and he only compensated with all the offensive rebounds he got. With the exception of Chuck Hayes, Bynum has two inferior post defenders on him — the super-soft Andersen and the undersized Scola. Why on earth does Fisher have the same amount of shot attempts as Bynum?

What back to back?
Wasn’t the Denver game on Friday?
Go on, try to beat them. Try to score on them. Stay in front of those guards. Try to tap out an offensive rebound on that Lilliputian front line. They're so awful, you're so good ... go on. Beat ‘em. - Kelly Dwyer on The Rockets

there are 72 left and yet the Lakers should not worry about making him happy for the next 72 games. Bynum could have won this game but yet Kobe kept trying to get the post to shot fadeaways. why?
I think smashing the Suns made me realize how far Kobe and the Lakers have come from five years ago, when the Suns had the world at their feet.
by PURPLE AND GOLD FOR LIFE on Nov 15, 2009 9:08 PM PST up reply actions
Because in the previous games Kobe has been money with the fadeaway while posting up? Is this the first game you’ve watched of the season. Are you kidding me right now?
Kobe has been making that fadeaway like players make layups. Just because it it wasn’t falling tonight you want the Lakers to change up their whole offensive plan?
If Kobe knows that his game isn't his usual game or that his shot isn't
falling why not step aside and let Bynum get most of the touches?

Seriously? You have to ask? Because Kobe is Kobe. If his first shot doesn’t go in then he’s sure the 2nd on will, and if the 2nd shot doesn’t go in, then he’s sure the 3rd one will and so on.
And I told you you shouldn’t worry about Kobe. You should be questioning why Fisher is taking 13 shots. He is the primary guy that should be giving Drew the ball and feeding the post, instead he’s taking bad shot after bad shot.
With Kobe at least you know he has a shot at making them and getting hot, but Fisher? There’s no excuse as to why he’s taking bad shots off the dribble.
you are not the only one.

Derek's season
Fg% = .375 (Not counting tonight’s 3-13)
3pt% = .285
He’s getting blown by with the small guards… Putting up some ridiculous fouls.
Something’s gotta give.

phils an idiot
aaron brooks completely torched him in the playoffs
yet he refuses to let farmar or brown start over him
Leave Chad Billingsley alone!!!
I don't think any one of the 3 can stay in front of him. Farmar has the best chance though.

I had enough, Lakers should be killing teams, all teams, they are that good but for some reason I think that is there problem, they think they can just show up and the refs weren’t a problem tonight so the Lakers have BIG questions….

Well of those we have
Bynum (Detroit), Rose (Chicago), Westbrook (OKC), and Robinson (NYK), all of whom can brutally torch Fisher. Honestly at this point, Brown needs to be taking most of the available minutes.

I doubt we're gonna get the # 1 seed in the west this year
my gut feeling says we’ll end up getting 3 or 4.
it all depends when we get pau back
if we get him back in early december
that would be great cause our schedule is very easy until then

yeah but we cant seem to beat a team like the Rockets
we’ll struggle against all those teams probably. We really havent played well at all this season. Im pretty concerned. Even without Pau, we should not be this bad

Oh well
Things are going to be much closer this year, all the “top” teams are having issues. I’m glad that there’s so much competition, really.
My biggest gripe is the horrible effort shown by the Lakers as a whole the last couple of games. Games they should have been in the whole game.
I agree
Well I’m out, got work in the morning, I should of never stayed up for the Lakers, playing like Slackers, can the Lakers please play better next game PLEASE…

Generally winning 70% of your games is a successful strategy.
The panic here is hilarious.
If we Rockets fans have any question it would be, “Why not make sure Bynum touches it on EVERY play”?
Go on, try to beat them. Try to score on them. Stay in front of those guards. Try to tap out an offensive rebound on that Lilliputian front line. They're so awful, you're so good ... go on. Beat ‘em. - Kelly Dwyer on The Rockets

yup
since we’re the Lakers, it feels like we’re never supposed to lose so when we do, everyone is ready to put a gun to their heads. Its gonna be a grind and I think this team is gonna pace itself for the season which is why I think they’ll finish in the 4th seed this year.

Kobe’s had a hurt groin since Sunday.
Last week Kobe didn’t practice for three days due to the groin, which Jackson said he hurt last Sunday vs New Orleans.
even more of a reason to try NOT to be the focal point of the offense.

Seriously? What is your problem? How long have you been watching Kobe?
He’s fine as the first offensive option, and he will continue to be the first option on offense.
Dude, hes just concerened
about him working too hard on offense that he’ll hurt himself. He wants the younger guy to do the most work which is reasonable

I love Kobe as much as anyone else.
But. I’m a Lakers fan first and Kobe is not always the best option. It all depends on mismatches.

Someone needs to drive or hit the open shot when he gets double teamed
So it opens up his options.
Hasn’t happened the last two games.
it's not about passing
there are other things involved. No one on the Rockets team could guard Bynum. And if Kobe has been hurt why wouldn’t anyone try to feed Bynum. He was a beast.

IN THIS GAME! wow. This is a team game. nothing against Kobe. I just wanted the win. no matter how much Kobe’s ego got hurt. Bynum was the better option.
I think smashing the Suns made me realize how far Kobe and the Lakers have come from five years ago, when the Suns had the world at their feet.
by PURPLE AND GOLD FOR LIFE on Nov 15, 2009 9:23 PM PST up reply actions
And I’ve maintained that Kobe will be the Lakers first option. ALWAYS. You’d think if you’ve been watching Kobe’s game develop since 1996 you’d understand that. It obviously is a team game but you should understand that by now Kobe will get his shots.
Bynum missed his first game with a strained right elbow and Gasol missed his sixth because of a strained right hamstring.
"You kidding?" Bryant said when asked whether Bynum and Gasol would kick him out of the post when they return. "They know I eat first and they get the seconds."
And no. Bynum shouldn’t be the 1st option, Kobe should be. Bynum should be the 2nd option on a team with no Gasol. If your gripe was that Drew should be the 2nd option I would agree with you, but no Drew should NOT be the 1st option
I think this is just based on matchups
In this game Bynum had a HUGE advantage and he shoulda gotten the ball more because Kobe did not have as big an advantage on his man this game. IN most games you wont have this but this game it was true. Just my opinion on this though :)

that is all i’m saying. some Laker fans think that because you don’t jump on Kobe’s jock that you are dissing the Lakers entirely. that is not true. I love the Lakers 1st b4 i love Kobe. so i want what’s best for the team. No matter how much you love Kobe his decisions are not always the best ones.

not in this game... you are wrong.
Bynum shot 8 for 12 and Kobe shot 5-20. I just want Kobe to feed bynum when his game is obviously not going for him. especially when he is hurt. Bynum had 21 pts and Kobe had 18. You posted his comments about him being hurt so that should show that he has no business shooting. I am talking about this game.

You act as if Kobe didn’t pass the ball to Bynum all night? Kobe gave him the ball when he thought fit. Seriously? You know Kobe’s going to get his so to argue that he shouldn’t be is idiotic. Regardless of what you want its not going to happen so the sooner you accept it the sooner you can stop whining about it.

k. so we are back on basketball
I think you are taking my comments to mean that I am saying that Bynum should be the number 1 option over Kobe in EVERY game. I am talking about games like this when his shot is not falling or when Bynum is clearly the better option.

Although we had a lot to be mad about today
Everyone that thinks that we suddenly aren’t going to win the West are completely out of their mind. We’re missing our second-best player, who makes our offense way better on so many levels, and the panic button is already being hit. Good heavens.
To whoever wants Bynum to be the focal point of the offense, his passing out of the post is horribly mediocre, he can’t facilitate the offense from the post or the top of the key (like Gasol can), and he’s not replacing Kobe any time soon. Now, should we be giving the ball to Bynum more for touches in the post against inferior players? Yes, but that doesn’t make him the focal point of our option. He shouldn’t be facilitating others as a primary focus of our offense.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
uhh we were missing our kobe and gasol
so those kind of excuses don’t apply to this loss.

Yeah. I’m not big on the booing. Didn’t like it when Dodgers Stadium booed Chad either, such a shame how a fan base can turn on specific people once things start going awry. Funny thing is Wolf and Kershaw could be prone to those bad nights as well, and they’d leave the mound with a standing ovation. Double standards…
