And 1's should be a statistical category

With so many advances in statistics in sports, especially basketball, I think And 1's should be considered in the box score. There's the infamous PER, the popular +/- stat, True shooting percentage, assist-to-turnover ratio and many more.

This idea came to me last night when, I believe, 5 different Lakers made a bucket while getting fouled. I think it shows the toughness of the team as well as showing the opposition in another light. It would give the leader in And 1's a right to brag a lot; saying things like "nobody can stop me from scoring."

So here's a discussion: do you think that there should be a solid, concrete And 1 stat? And if so, who do you think would be the leader of this stat?

There could possibly be someone who does keep track of that stuff, I mean, if people keep track of dunks made, there should be someone who keeps track of AND-1’s. I found this, but it only keeps track for two seasons: http://www.82games.com/andone.htm

What about passes leading directly to a person getting fouled on the play? Kind of like TS%, but a TA%

We track it

So far Josh Smith leads the league this season.

Dwayne Wade led last season with 95.

The Lakers as a whole this season draw And1’s on 3.06% of their FGA, 10th in the league.

Last season they drew on 3.15%, 7th in the league.

Thanks! & nice site

If you need suggestions on other things to track, I’d suggest “assists” where the recipient, instead of making the shot following a key pass, is fouled and goes to the line and scores something.

The weird thing about and 1's

is that you’d think they’re the most efficient way to score in the game, right? Make a basket and get a foul for a freebie. However, with the way stats works, free throws on shots you DON’T make are actually much more efficient. That’s because with an and-1, you theoretically can earn 3 points on 1 shot attempt (very efficient), but with free throws, you can earn 2 points on 0 shot attempts. It’s weird how this stuff works.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

That's why using shot attempts is misleading

When Dex talks about scoring and efficiency, he’ll use points per possession instead of points per shot, so that 2 foul shots on one possession is correctly labeled as less efficient than a made shot + foul attempt on one possession.

The way "some" stats works

TS%
True Shooting Percentage; the formula is PTS / (2 * (FGA + 0.44 * FTA)). True shooting percentage is a measure of shooting efficiency that takes into account field goals, 3-point field goals, and free throws.

You are correct about EFG% though. It’s only raw FGs, which hurts guys who get to the line a ton.

Poster for next year? I'm thinking My Little Pony.

Well I was referring to the "points per shot" stat

Which gets inflated by free throws.

For example, if you just consider points per shot, then going to the line every shot and making 50% of your free throws (no and-1s) is more efficient than taking every shot and making it. This is due to the fact that they don’t give shot attempts when a foul is called.

I agree though, true shooting is pretty badass (how did they get the 0.44 multiplier for FTA though?)

With NBA Refereeing

It would be almost meaningless.

But I do love watching Kobe get the and 1.

Yeah refs can really suck at times

but if NBA decided to count And 1’s, I would’t mind, stats are meaningless anyway, getting the W and getting the ring are the only 2 important aspects of the game.

There are basic Fundamentals that are needed to move forward in this game. Always keep your guard up at all times to avoid being caught in a trap. Overcome the fouls that will be commited against you REBOUND AND PRESS ON. ADJUST to the LimeLight: ALL-STAR PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Know what your role is and play your position. Find a game plan and execute it. REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF THE GAME WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT.
