Joel Meyers is growing on me
Lets not kid ourselves. There will never be another Chick Hearn, NEVER. He is the best there ever was and the best that there ever will be. He was a superstar and helped the Lakers become who they are today.
With that being said though, Joel Meyers is getting a lot better. He was really awkward in the beginning, probably due to nerves and trying too hard to fit in. So far this pre-season Stu and Joel are showing a really nice chemistry. Joel has been cracking jokes all game long like trying to get Stu to name the all Staples Center shoot around tournament team haha. Then him and Stu were making fun of the flimsy rims in Ontario and Joel even called the San Diego Sports Arena a state of the art facility haha. To me, Joel is finally opening up and showing a sense of humor which really helps the broadcast.
What do you guys think?

Spero could make me like the simulcast again. Different style, but he reminds me of a young Chick. Not as innovative, but the same palpable energy. Chick on basketball was like Bird (Parker, not Larry) on sax.
Torn about Stu. There’s something comforting about knowing exactly what Stu is going to say in practically any given instance. But objectively it’s a bit of a drag, yes.
Yes Stu has got to go
I noticed that many times when he and Joel Meyers were interacting and talking about the game Joel would ask him a question and Stu just straight out ignores him… I never really liked him because of that..

I have a DVD Recorder and I actually hooked it up so it would record the radio sound with the TV picture onto the DVDs. Then they screwed me by stopping the simultaneous broadcasting. I am thinking of hooking in the Audio NBA League Pass to see if that will work.
All to avoid the Stu’isms Sigh.
that is hilarious
man! I thought I didn’t like him. too funny!

on Chick vs Joel
One of the things I really appreciated about Chick as opposed to Joel was that Chick seemed to go out of his way to get to know the opposing teams players. He would always have super nice things to say about the other team as well as sometimes parents and families of players.
I feel like Joel and Stu are a lot more home-court centric in that they are super focused on the Lakers. Sometimes, I feel like the home-court bias is a little too much. I always felt like Stu and Joel were improper when announcing Ariza’s hard foul against the Blazers last year.
I’m sure this is generalized too much. However, I don’t really have any issues with the announcing duo beyond the repetitive nature of Stu as mentioned in lazNirv.
Watch games on League Pass.
You will notice that Joel and Stu as about as fair and even as team broadcasters come. They are not bad with homerism. I live in Providence, RI so i get all of the Celtics games on my cable. Try listening to Tommy Heinsohn, and you find out what homerism is. He’s not the worst though. New Orleans’ color guy is terrible.
Personally, I like Joel. I really didn;t get to hear Chick, since I do not live out there, but I can imagine much of the dislike is just because Joel followed a legend. Time is all he needed.
Now, if he could stop saying, “It’s anyone’s game now!” Every single time a lead is cut.
Blazer announcers are the worst
I had league pass a couple of years ago when I was away at college and they just flat out hate the Lakers and have the most homer announcers known to man.

yeah they are the most biased announcers in the league
Tommy Heinsohn and the other old guy are a close 2nd…
Because when I think of Boris Diaw, I think of Beethoven and the age of Romanticism....
They sound different if you are a Blazer fan than they do if you're indifferent to the Blazers or hate the Blazers...
Mike Rice (the color guy) is sort of like your vaguely out-of-control half-soused favorite uncle at Thanksgiving. Mike Barrett, the play-by-play guy, is his straight man and is just regular Oregon folks.
It’s like watching the game with family members.
Yeah, they whine and bitch about the refs too much. So do we all.

.................... and yes, hating the Lakers is Rule No. 1 of hardcore Blazer fandom.
When Laker fans return the hate, the universe will be complete.

Right now we are..............
just indifferent. Maybe that will change.
Billy Mac: "Lamar, can you see yourself actually getting in the (boxing) ring"?
Lamar Odom: "No. My face is too pretty."
Stu will at least change his mind when he sees the slo mo
Even when it doesn’t favor the Lakers
Homer announcers will continue with their story, even as the slo mo visual is contradicting their perspective

Stu and Joel are actually very good
They’re undoubtedly the least biased and “homerist” of all local, home announcers. To the extent that they are biased, it is mainly in knowing more about the Lakers than about the opposing players.
It is VERY common for Stu and Joel to actually be less inclined to call an opponent foul a foul, or more inclined to call a Laker foul a foul, than even I am. In fact, listen closely and you’ll find that they say things like, “Boy, Lamar really got away with one that time,” about half a dozen times per game.
My take on them has always been that they are probably well aware of the fact that home announcers are expected to be biased, and in an attempt to disprove their critics and prove themselves worthy, they overcompensate just a little, even hesitating to call for a pro-Lakers foul call when really they should.
The Knicks announcing team is pretty damn good, as I recall. Having Mike Breen for your local announcer is a privilege, and former star players like Walt Frazier always tend to be more fair, and less inclined to cheapen the sport with petty homerism.
The Blazers’ announcers are indeed the worst in the league. And I don’t buy the argument that they’re just trying to represent the primary types of Blazers fans; what they’re trying to do is boost ratings and viewership by inciting fan fury and mindless fanaticism. Regardless of whom they represent, they still have a job, right? And it seems to me that their job is first to call the game to the best of their ability, and only then to identify with the fans, as a secondary part of their job. In the former, they are either completely incompetent, or blatantly disrespectful, in their disregard for the professionalism their job should require.
The Boston guys are pretty bad. I remember thinking a couple others were particularly bad, as well, but can’t remember who it was, now.
All that to say, try paying special attention to all the times that Stu and Joel do one of the following:
- Hesitate to call for a pro-Lakers foul, when good sense says it would probably be right to do so
- Not hesitate to suggest that there could have been a pro-opponent foul on the play
- Change their tune upon seeing the replay, which is all anyone can be asked to do
- Readily admit that a Lakers player “got away with one there”
Pay attention to things like those, and you’ll find that Stu and Joel are actually pretty good, when it comes to objectivity and fairness in calling the game. Certainly, far above average for local commentary crews.
I think if our guys were like the Blazers’ guys, I’d go insane.

I agree completely.....
It seems to me a lot of the anti-Joel and Stu sentiment is usually regarding their LACK of homerism. I agree with you, I cringe at the homerism and appreciate when they stay away from it.
Billy Mac: "Lamar, can you see yourself actually getting in the (boxing) ring"?
Lamar Odom: "No. My face is too pretty."
I always say this....
They do not have to sell the Lakers to Lakers fans. We’re there and we’ll always be there, so homerism in unnecessary.
I find that homer broadcast teams usually have fan bases were attendance or viewership is lacking, Or the fan base is over reactive and front running. Best examples are New Orleans (lacking) and Boston (front running). I wonder what’s up with Portland? The Knicks also have an even handed team with Mike Breen and Walt Frazier. Frazier goes out of his way to praise opponents. You’d think Kobe was a Knick….!
Can someone tell me how GS’s team is? I’m willing to bet they are fairly even. Their fans do not have to be sold.
Anyone remember when the Blazer announcers absolutely lost it when Trevor Ariza fouled Rudy Fernandez??
I thought they were going to fire up the electric chair right there at mid-court. They did about the same thing with Odom the time before that.
Of course the replay showed that Ariza barely touched Fernandez with his elbow in an obvious effort to hit the ball, but why let that deter the mob from crucifying him.
Billy Mac: "Lamar, can you see yourself actually getting in the (boxing) ring"?
Lamar Odom: "No. My face is too pretty."
There is no Chick vs Joel
I just think that Joel isn’t as bad as he once was. I think he is getting comfortable doing the Laker games and he’s actually fun to listen to.
Also, I don’t dislike Stu at all. I love when he says “that was NIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE” hahah.
Tickets for opening night came in the mail tonight, can’t wait. Rings here we come.

did KCAL broadcast game 4 of the 2002 finals???
cause i know NBC did it but for some reason i remember hearing chick make the call on KCAL that the game was in the refrigerator for some reason …i dont know im not so sure…i always scratch my head when i try to remember
geez i wish there was an archive for older games somewhere….
Because when I think of Boris Diaw, I think of Beethoven and the age of Romanticism....
Pretty sure KCAL didn’t broadcast the game on TV but I’m sure you heard Chick on the radio. He definitely still called the game.

Chick always made sure....
that he put Stu in check. Now Stu loves to have his terrible saying like Bill Walton. He says things like “turnover galore”, “and that’s the thing, get it to the big man”, and my personal favorite "and Kobe says ‘just give the ball to me’ ".
Chick never let him run the mic like that. Chick was a bad ass. Miss that guy.
Well let me welcome everybody to the wild wild west. A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness.
I am 100% fine with both Joel and Stu...
Best team in the NBA, truth be told.
And I tell the truth.

Arg! Stu Lance was the “guest” on the 710AM radio pregame show. I think my ears are going to bleed.
I repeat: I don’t hate him as a person, I just feel like “I have heard everything he has to say at least 1000 times.” It is the same reason why I don’t listen to “Beatles Specials” on the radio. I’ve heard enough of them!
after watching baseball playoffs on fox, I really have grown to really appreciate the NBA’s commentators in general, compared to the baseball playoff commentators everyone sounds good to me.
In Kobe we trust!
i hate chip caray!

Stu & Joel are awesome IMHO
I think the worst commentator ever is Sean Elliot, hands down!!!!
